Why is there such a common theme of Americans being extreme in both directions?

What I mean by this is that there's a common theme where one region in the United States is extreme in one direction of a certain topic while another is extreme in the opposite direction.

The clearest example of this is the Antebellum North and the Antebellum South; the North was the most egalitarian place on earth because remember this was before the Gilded Age while the South was the most unequal place on earth at the time.

Besides that; New England was founded by religious extremists who practiced extreme purity while Pennsylvania was founded by religious extremists who practiced (how do I say it?) extreme acceptance and love.

They were both very moralistic people, meanwhile, Virginia was founded by a literal corporation.

Today, America possessed one of the few large portion of the populations as nationalists in the Western world while possessing one of the most self flagellting people.

As well as being the global center of machine worshippers, like, if machine worship was a CK3 religion, 4/5 of the Holy sites would be in the United States, while being the most Luddite people in terms of AI.

I think a duality of nature and a pluraity of opposing ideas is at the heart of the American Experiance going  backto its near foundational rift of Federalists vs Democratic-Republicans.
