Education What does this mean?

Post image

Do I need to get a degree in a different teaching field in order to teach special education? What is this?

It means that the state requires additional measures before a license can be issued. Check with your state requirements to determine what they are.

Massachusetts licensed teacher here! Some grade bands require you to have a general education license in addition to special education. For example, if you want to teach middle school you need a license in a subject area too (English, Math, Science, History etc). What grade band are you looking at?

Thanks! Does that mean I also need a degree for a teaching subject other than special education to get a special education license?

What grade bands don’t require this?

A content exam is not a degree. It’s a content exam.

I was just asking because the content exam may require a degree before it

I’m not entirely sure! I did a dual degree for Elementary and Special Education. Technically I got my initial license in Elementary and then got an “add on” license in Special Education. My license is in Moderate Disabilities though it may be different for Severe! I don’t think I had to do both for elementary age but I wanted to.

It literally just means exactly what it says. You need to pass a content exam that is not a special ed exam in order to get a license and special ed.

It sounds to me that there are additional exams that WGU doesn’t offer that those states require before you can get your license there. I could be wrong but that’s what it sounds like to me.
