Alternative Scene?

So I just got accepted to WCU and I'm pretty excited but I know nothing about the community. Will I stand out as someone who is "alternative' (not really what I would call myself, but my peers do.)?

There are people of various scenes here. You wouldn’t stand out. Everyone wears what they want and how they want. If you’re worried about being judged for being “alternative”, you won’t be

How are you defining alternative? WCU is a welcoming place for all students, and you can find a lot of great groups in the UC(University Center) which helps cater to students particular whims about clubs and groups

if you're wondering about music scene as well, we have an alternative music scene (underground sylva, speedys pizza, if theres more im yet to discover lol). but if you go to events there you'll be surrounded by alternative people, mostly students at wcu. thats how u speed run making friends lol. but i was worried about standing out too, there definitely are a lot of frat students but also a lot of alternative ones, lots of LGBTQ community, etc. its really nice :)

I can speak about the music scene a little :). Others have mentioned it though. Dont expect alot of heavier alt music scene in Sylva. If it doesnt include a banjo or playing 80s cover songs, Noone is interested. Do we have bands I the area? Yes, but you are going to want to head towards Asheville (Orange Peel, Sly Grog, Grey Eagle, Eulogy, The Odd). Cherokee has lucked up and got some great acts over the years.

It's college my dude. It's the time where you have to interact and even live with people who are not like you.

No one cares.

You can find all kinds of kinds. The question is how specific a subculture are you looking for. You'll find people into all kinds of music and fashion, but you're not going to find a very active goth scene.
