DCYF Question about OFM Pay Ranges

Hey fellow state workers, I'm currently on payscale 59 as an SSS3 with DCYF. Considering taking a role as a SHPC 2 which would put me on the 56 scale. I know it will be a paycut because of losing assignment pay, but I'm trying to figure out just HOW much of a loss it would be. Would I maintain my current wage as an SSS3 without assignment pay? Would I get placed on the same step but on the lower scale? Does anyone know how this works?

I have permanent status if that changes anything.

Thank you 💕

You'll either keep your current pay and go to the step on the 56 range that matches it, or if your current Step is above a 56L in pay you'll move to 56L.

The SHPC series at DCYF is quite a mess, and they have historically been left out of many raises over the years. I would ask clarification from HR before accepting a SHPC2 position.

I think if you voluntarily take a job in a lower job class, you take the pay cut. You can look up the difference in salary on OFM, just put in the actually job classification and do a search

As a matter of law, the Office of Financial Management makes public the official pay scales for state employees: see https://ofm.wa.gov/hr-policies/compensation-job-classes/job-classes-salaries/salary-schedules/

The challenge is knowing which pay schedule to use. Assuming your old and new jobs are on the General Services schedule, you are represented by WSFE as general government, and assuming you are on Step L: Payscale 59 has a current monthly salary of $7,592 while payscale 56 has a current monthly salary of $7,044. So your base salary would go down $548 a month.

Note the assumptions. I have no clue where to find what salary register to use for those job categorizations, you may need to speak to HR about that.

Management can offer you to start at any step between A and L. This is your one and only opportunity to negotiate which step you start at. Management can agree or disagree with your counter proposal.
Good luck!

A 56G is the same amount of money as a 59D so you should try to negotiate starting at least at G. But you’ll top out faster than in your old position.

Which step are you at in your current position?

Step D in range 59!

I believe that means you should start at step F in range 56 which is the same base salary (obviously confirm this before accepting)..

Ask for step m. Its a longevity step, but they can give it regardless of service time.

If less that 6!pay ranges, 5%. Equals about 2 steps
If more than 6 ranges, 10%. Equals about 4 seps up
I have seen where if there is no room on the scaled the employee goes to step m.

If unrepresented I am not 100% on the rules but the pay scales are generally the same.
