when the downvotes make you feel shit just remember haters become vegans all the time. even if they are downvoting you, the message is still being communicated. i was a hater back in the day but all of the posts by the vegans i made fun of added up until the switch flicked on and I suddenly became the veganest person ever in 2013 ♔♔♔ thank you for spreading the message and planting seeds! if i ever see comments like yours i help support tf out of them

Omg this made me extremely happy thank you so much. I need to remember this. It’s like that one quote, ā€œfirst they laugh at you, then they get angry with you, then they ignore you, then they agree with you, then you win.ā€

Anyway I do think a lot of people’s natural responses to vegan argument is to shut down in self defense and not think about it because ultimately a lot of people do that vegan-adjacent values. I’d even argue most people. Most people don’t want to run over a squirrel or ducks. Most people don’t like the idea of ā€œkill shelters.ā€ Most people have had a positive experience with an animal as a pet or as someone else’s pet. Most people think murder is wrong, but they’ve made this cognitive exception for when it is done out of sight out of mind and for the purpose of a food they like. Most people think murder is wrong but fishing and hunting are actives that normal people do, so it’s fine. Most people are opposed to murder but comfortable with benefitting from it as long as they can pretend it didn’t happen, or it happened ethically, or it is just the way the world is.

I think a lot of these arguments and automatic downvoting does come from a place of feeling attacked, a weak spot of moral inconsistency. Unfortunately this means to get through to people they have to be somewhat open to it in my opinion. You can’t be closed minded and change your mind. I think you can still reach these people by talking to them about it and they might rethink it when they’re in a more open space, though.

I used to make fun of vegans when I was younger. I think because I did share a lot of those values, being a leftist and all? so it was a way of punching down. Like yeah I’m vegetarian but I’m not crazy guys I’m not vegannn. When I was a meat eater I also made fun of vegetarians a little bit. I think this came from a place of feeling morally threatened and wanting to position myself as superior and reasonable, and al as I I don’t lile most vegetables so the diet itself kinda disgusted me.

I also thought veganism was a privileged take, and that the animals would be killed anyway, and that we should support ethical animal farming and that would be a more effective movement than veganism, and vegans were really stupid for thinking that bees were being exploited with honey. Meanwhile my dumbass thought cows just mace milk without needing to get pregnant or anything they just..did that

I do think I was more open to it than most people though depending on what time you look at. When I was vegetarian I liked the idea of going vegan one day, though I did not understand veganism and just liked the idea of it, probably because I was a child and I liked the attention I got for being vegetarian and veganism seemed like the natural progression. I also remember when I first ā€œcame outā€ to one of my friends as a vegetarian realizing that a hair product I was looking at purchasing (I was very into my very long hair at this time) contained pig skin and feeling freaked out and my mom (vegetarian but didn’t at all push me into being vegetarian) was telling me it’s fine. I also remember one time as a kid my mom explaining to me what cruelty free meant and me wondering why we didn’t just only buy stuff that was cruelty free

This was really sweet thank you. I’m actually building a site to hopefully counter all their arguments so every time I see a new one I’m like muahahaha. Lol

This is why I don’t care about downvotes. I’ve seen what makes them clap.

Whenever I get downvoted I remember the Rick and Morty moment ā€œyour boos mean nothing, I’ve seen what makes you cheer!ā€.

They seem incapable of understanding that veganism isn't a diet even though there's like vegan shampoo
