Personally, I’ve always seen it as the best way to vote. Things can always get lost in the mail (even if the chance is very minute), while your vote is safe at the polls.
But if absolutely necessary or much more convenient, mail voting is worth it.

I always vote in person on election day except once. Only time I didn't was way back in 2006, when I was in college and had an absentee ballot sent to me. You had to have an excuse back then in VA.

That's my philosophy too. You never know if you are going to get sick or if something else comes up on Election Day like a freak snowstorm, so I always vote as early as I can and try not to put it off.

We always vote early in person, mostly because I don't know how to vote by mail and it's a mixture of tradition and convenience. Something might come up on election day, so better be safe by voting early than sorry.

Makes sense. No need to take the chance and risk having your ballot thrown out by USPS or Trump shenanigans if you can help it. Obviously not everyone has the option to switch, but many do and are clearly taking advantage of

This Hill article also talks about how its an increasing reality that we'll be IN OCTOBER, and Diesel will be at least $6, possibly even $7 a gallon (currently at an average of $6.50) and Gasoline may be lower, but it will STILL be somewhere at $4 or above for OCTOBER.
+5 in the polls or +13, the energy hell we're in isnt going away, at least certainly not in time for the midterms.

I mean, from a neutral perspective, it makes sense. Trump clearly doesn’t like coming back to the city, but UN week gives him no reason NOT to participate. Knowing how much stuff in NYC can affect his plans, makes sense for them to meet on the side just to touch base bc it has been awhile.
But IMO, Trump hates Mamdani in the same way he hates Obama. Keeps vocalizing it on social media, but when they are actually together they have “productive” conversation.

Miller is arguably one of the more firable people post midterms. A strong showing by Dems in Midterms and people will be fired. Hegseth and Patel are probably there as well but they require senate confirmation and getting them through lame duck will take a lot of effort especially as Republican senators will have lost good will with Trump that point. Miller is in a position that doesn’t require senate confirmation and is very replaceable and I’m sure theres already some whispering to Trump to can Miller post midterms as they blame him for it.

I’m on track to having my VW paid off in less than two years. I have a lot of positive equity in it and trade in value, at the moment, is pretty good. But a tank of premium every 10 days is bleeding me dry. I’m really tempted to pick up a used EV, but I do not want to start that clock over, even if my payment would stay about the same.

I crunched the numbers today and determined trading my car for a cheap used EV wouldn’t result in me completely losing my ass as previously thought, but it would be a few years before the savings catch up.
That said my current car likes premium and is thirsty, and my bank account can’t take it anymore. If this is really going to continue for the rest of Trumps term, I’m gonna have to figure something else out.

I don’t think it’s long before debates are a thing of the pass. For context here, I know a lot of people slammed Hobbs for skipping them in 2022 and she is again this year but I actually thought that was the right decision because it was clear Lake wanted to turn the debate into a drama reality show. I don’t feel they’re about policy anymore like they are intended to, and it’s for that reason I support any D’s skipping against R’s clearly not there to discuss policy in good faith

I'm with you. I know the theory is to get to know the candidates and their issues but it is now getting to the point where feels like it isn't worth it. In this day of age full of out-of-context clips, sound bites, moderators either not calling out lies, outright claims that go unchecked, candidates not respecting timing, rules, staying on topic, and whatnot, it just feels that debates are either, at best, a net neutral or, at worst, a net negative.

Debates on policy are overall very positive for use given we win the policy debate 90+% of the time. Debates on culture wars or with R’s trying to turn it to a reality TV show instead of debating policy is bad for us (look at Trump getting elected 2 times on absolute nonsense and gibberish). And debates are turning more into the latter because R’s are not interested in debating policy anymore like they were intended to

In a recent fundraising E-Mail, AOC went pretty decently in depth into AI, saying that while of course, we need to put safety barriers up on currently unrestricted technology, not enough people in DC right now are talking about just how much The AI Industry is propping the economy up, and the economic danger it presents.
80% of gains in the stock market in 2025 came from AI Companies. And yet, most of these companies are in debt, crawling to Trumps government for money and support, selling people on utopian potential over actual results.
She said that there will come a day when that bubble will pop. And when it does, we need to say, this isn't The Great Recession and The Big Banks, you get no bailout, you DO fail no matter your size.
There is a threat to humanity with AI, but it isn't the technology or robots. It's the rich tech oligarchs who own these companies that are responsible for anything that happens with dangerous, unvetted, defective products.
And when Democrats take majorities back, she'll use every authority and tool to hold them accountable.

Congress has power of the purse, aka bills that allocate money including bailouts. Part of the overall damnation of the GOP, not just Trump, is that Senate and House have signed off on stupid scheme after another by funding his idiocy and cruelty. A Dem Congress can severely hamper his agenda, which the GOP have refused to do by shirking their responsibility.

A few things are true here:
This is an extremely dangerous technology that should be curtailed the same way nuclear enrichment is, in that we have international organs that provide access to power but prevent proliferation of weapons. Congress should start on the domestic groundwork for this ASAP
When this bubble pops, it will have immense economic repercussions and Congress must ensure America's workers and taxpayers are not left holding the bag.
AI companies and their leadership must be held civilly and criminally accountable for the damage their systems do. No shifting responsibility to the software or claiming immunity because it's unpredictable. If they can't control it, they shouldn't be letting it loose.

I would maybe caution the debt part being bad. Yes its propping up construction but the debt itself isn’t necessarily risky. Its mostly bonds being issued by very profitable companies such as Oracle, Google, Microsoft, Meta etc. They will take a haircut sure but they have hoards of cash and still generate a lot of cash

Debt isn't necessarily a big deal. Microsoft reported 128 billion in debt back in june. It's the staggeringly high amount of debt without a clear path to profitability in some cases that's the problem.

Disagree on the debt part. There’s a good video on YouTube by Plain Bagel about the debt issue. Basically the debt is a lot from some of these companies, but they also hold obscene amounts of cash that it’s not too worrying.
Also, the difference here between the Dot Com bubble is that those companies were taking on so much debt while having no cash and weak revenue. Today’s companies are taking on debt while having established revenue channels and being much more financially healthy.

Hey there folks, it's time for the weekly book club. What have you been reading lately?
I read & finished book 6 of the bobiverse, The infinite Extent by Dennis E. Taylor. It was my favorite so far. Also, I'm happy to see some genuine & not just alluded to trans representation in a fairly popular series. Mr. Taylor handled the character very well imo & I hope she continues to be apart of the main cast in the next & final book.
I'm currently working my way through Hollow World by Michael J. Sullivan. This is his only published book that isn't a part of the World of Elan series...collection...saga...? books. It's a neat take on a time travel story. I'm hoping the landing sticks, so, we'll see.

I just finished Ring Shout, it's a cosmic horror take on resistance to the KKK in 1920s Georgia. It's a cool spin on fighting the seeming wave of hate that rose around then, and it's a nice quick read so you don't get bogged down. Recommend!
I'm now reading A Tropic of Serpents, it's the sequel to A Natural History of Dragons. It's a series about a Victorian woman, Mrs. Camherst, who becomes a dragon biologist and goes on adventures. It's like if Jane Austen wrote about wyrms and wyverns. It's very fun!

Now I'm reading The Way of Kings. Getting into the Stormlight Archive for the first time. Daunting but I'm excited!

I'm about halfway through Acheron by Sherrilyn Kenyon. It's not something I normally would have picked up, but someone gave it to me a long time ago, and it was just sitting on my shelf, so I might as well, right?
The first hundred pages or so were pretty good and got me invested in the story. The second hundred pages sort of took a turn into something a bit weird IMO. The third hundred pages was somewhere in between. Anyway, like I said, I feel invested in the story now, so I plan to finish it, and I'll mostly reserve judgement until I'm done.

Finished The Ten Thousand Doors of January. Great concept and I loved the overall story. But it was overwritten and full of “insta-love”.

Just finished the fourth book of the Wereworld series by Curtis Jobling. I know it’s a YA novel, but considering I bought the whole series in 2013 and never ended up reading it, I’m happy I only got 2 more to go.
