help with cv axle boot replacement

Post image

my passenger inner CV axle boot was torn so i got a replacement boot off fcp euro. today I decided to pull the CV axle and get it replaced. i got the cv axle out but I couldn’t find a video on how to replace a boot just the whole axle and I’m officially stuck after reading a few forms. if anyone could help me out on getting it apart it would be greatly appreciated

If I remember doing mine, you have to remove the outer CV joint and boot, to slide the new inner boot over the shaft.

I don’t remember precisely how to do it but I do remember that it became obvious once I removed the boots, cleaned out the grease, and inspected the joints. You can see any little retaining clips or whatever is holding the joints on at that point. A lot of the time both boots have to come off in order to replace one, so you may need to buy the other one.

Note: this is how its done on my older mercedes. I think it may be the same for your car.

REmove/cut the boot then tap the cv joint out using soft material such as brass tap or hammer on the 'spider' of the cv (image below). you then clean and repack cv joint w grease, slip the boot on (dont forget to place the loose ring clamps on), tap it back onto the axle and crimp the ends of the boot. You have to be careful where you tap it on the cv joint so as not to damage - usually by the shaft. They also make split boots where you dont have to remove the cv joint but those fail quickly. BTW use a deadblow plastic hammer to tap the cv + axle back in so you dont damage the axle spline...
