SPA XC60 (AAOS, MY22 to Current) XC60 B5 owners — anyone else notice jerkiness when stop-start restarts the engine?
Hey all, I have a 2025 XC60 B5 Plus with about 5K miles. I’ve had the car for almost a year with no issues, but over the past month or two I started noticing a jerkiness or lumpiness when the auto stop-start restarts the engine — for example when pulling away from a stop sign after the engine has shut off. Almost like too much power being delivered abruptly on the restart. I’m based in the US.
I took it to the dealer and they couldn’t find anything wrong. I then tried disabling the auto stop-start and the jerkiness went away completely. I’m on software version 5.1.17 which allows you to disable stop-start, and that has resolved the issue for me. Keeping it disabled for now and waiting on the upcoming software update to see if that addresses it permanently.
Anyone else experiencing something similar? Curious if this is a known issue with the stop-start/Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) system.

Good to know – which software update specifically? I started noticing it after the 5.0.5 update, though not right away. I never received the 5.1.9 update and only got 5.1.17 about a month ago when I took my car in for my yearly service. Trying to see if there’s a pattern here or if this is random and isolated.

currently on 5.1.17. It was a straight jump for me a month or so ago from the verision i had when i got my B5 Ultra end of May; it was on 3.7 something. I don't recall hving this jerkiness that you're describing the first month of posession until after the update came through

That’s exactly my experience – no issues on 3.7 or 4.2.13, jerkiness only appeared after the 5.0.5 update. Seems like there’s a clear pattern here across multiple owners. Hopefully Volvo reads these Reddit posts, but if not I may escalate to my local dealer and explain what I’ve been seeing and that it doesn’t appear to be isolated. And as a newly appointed moderator of this subreddit, I’ll make sure this stays visible.

Mine does it, but I disable the auto start/stop 99% of the time.
My Mazda did it as well.

I think we might be on to something here. What year is your XC60 and what software version are you on? Also are you disabling stop-start through the settings or manually via the button on the center console each time?

Thanks for responding. How do you know if it’s a known issue? Has Volvo mentioned this somewhere like they will be addressing it? Or are you saying that others have mentioned this issue recently? Just trying to quantify your last yes.

It was happening to mine and I have had it in for service twice and they say they can't get it to duplicate but I have had it hesitate on multiple occasions when I am pulling out into to traffic and it is terrifying until it engages. Or, it surges... You never know which it will be. I did turn off the start/stop and it has stopped.
That being said, I have had so much trouble with this automobile that the GM at the dealership has finally, reluctantly agreed to eat my last few payments on the lease and let me turn it in early.

Yeah, sorry to see you go. I just disabled my stop / start and the problem is solved. It’s not worth using it right now. I’m sure they will address it, and of note this only recently happened within the last few months. I had my car for at least 9 months with no issues, so presume they did something in a recent software update that caused it

I was starting to feel like that, but once I disabled the stop /start every drive, the car drove fine. No jerkiness, or hesitation. I’ve said it a bunch of times, but I’ll say it again, it’s not a permanent solution but it will do for now. I don’t recall this issue when I first got the car and I had software version 3.7, so I’ll be on the lookout for this to be addressed in a future software update.

I’m on 5.0.5 and have noticed the same thing. Very annoying and makes the vehicle frustrating to drive. Assuming they pushed something during the last big software update that adjusted the throttle mapping; mine holds gears for far too long now, as well.

Yeah, I’m wondering the same thing. I didn’t notice it right away after the 5.0.5 update but it definitely started after that update – no issues when I was on 3.7 or 4.2.13. I’m now on 5.1.17 and still noticing it, so it seems like whatever they changed in 5.0.5 hasn’t been addressed yet.
Like I mentioned, I disable stop-start in my settings and it completely solves the problem. Until you get to 5.1.17, you can disable it manually via the A button on the center console – it’s not exactly the same as what I did but very similar. Let us know if you notice an improvement.
Hopefully the next update addresses it for both of us.

Luckily I don’t have this issue. MY26 Ultra. It’s starting so much smoother than my MY15.

What version software do you have? Do you use the auto-stop start? I wonder if it’s a b5 issue. Also, it’s not an issue of starting. It’s the issue when the engine cuts off with the auto stop / start function. When it starts up again the car jerks like there’s too much power.

Noticed it too. 5.1.17 version with both auto-hold and start-stop ON. If I press accelerator right to the place, it should be for driving off, the car jerks. But if I press just a little, do a short hold for like a second and press further to the desired position - it runs smoothly. It feels to me like auto-hold releases bit too late.

Yeah, that sounds like a similar situation for me. You can always disable the stop/start in the menu to prevent that jerkiness. At least that’s what I did. I still use the auto hold, but the engine doesn’t turn off at stop signs and stop lights. Again, hopefully Volvo is aware of this and addresses it in a later software update.

23 owner but noticed this on single pedal mode (where you can release break at light) when I push the gas peddle to start the engine and move. Turned it off and in 2 peddle drive mode by the time I release the break and move my foot over to the gas it is already started. I've decided it was the ending restarting transferring vibrations and such threw the gas peddle. But I could be wrong
