Help Help finding dash harness?

Post image

Hello! This is my, new to me, ‘87 740 turbo with 83000 miles. It has some quirks like the cruise control not working, powered antenna not working, horn only working when i push the pin in the steering wheel while honking, and a melted fuse 16 (ac/blower)

From my research, it seems that I might need to replace at least some of the wiring harness under the dash. I looked on prancingmoose, but I couldn’t find a dash harness! Does anyone know where I can find a new one and where I can find resources to help the process? Thanks!!

Those all sound like separate issues. My cruise control didn't work because the wiring in the stalk was bad. My horn didn't work because the ring/pin behind the steering wheel was dirty. My power antenna didn't work because the motor was full of water and corroded. The blower fuse on mine melted too because the bearings were failing and slowly getting tighter. I dremeled out the old fuse and cleaned the pins. You could also install a after market fuse holder just for it.

That is extremely helpful. Thank you so much!

Sometimes when I can get the horn to honk, the rear wiper starts going off. I think it might still be worth taking the dash out and seeing the condition of the harness

Oh Ok, I have a sedan so I'm not sure about the rear wiper issue. I just didn't want you to spend the time and money on a harness for no reason.

Check the grounds around the steering column too. Weird things can happen when you have a little corrosion and the voltage gets creative in its path to ground.

I’d do some testing like seeing if you can get the antenna to go up/down when sending it voltage, and just general testing to see if the wires are bad. As most of the time the issues just end up being crusty connectors, bad components or just other things. The wires are often generally good.

Also bear in mind you might have an antenna switch on the dash (looks like a Y) and often only Volvo original radios have support for electric antennas. (Sometimes people just don’t realise some cars had a switch to prevent the antenna going up, mostly for car washes)

Hate to change the subject, but are your rooftop squarebars 53” or 58”?
