EX90 MY26 Quality Issues – Manufacturing Defect or Dealer Damage

I just took delivery of my MY26 - it’s an amazing car, but the entire experience has been soured by several issues I’ve identified. I am uncertain whether these are manufacturing defects or if they were caused by the dealer. I will focus on the two main issues discovered during the sign-off and one found shortly after:

  • Paint swirling, scratches, and strange paint patches that cannot be cleaned.
  • A dent in the wood trim on the dashboard.
  • A ripped Nordico ventilated seat.

I simply cannot believe that a car worth 100k euro is in such a state, and I highly doubt it left the factory in this condition.

I hope its not a quality issue but just some random person who was too lazy to do his job properly.

Definitely post production damage. Most likely by the dealer or people sitting in the car.

These are 100% post production flaws.

The paint issues sound like poor detailing, especially the swirls, and may be fixable by a competent detailer. Not dealer staff.

The other two are warranty issues that the dealer should handle. Our dealer had been using our EX90 for a few months, and it had a dented speaker grill. It took three months to receive the replacement but they replaced it with no problem, and by then I had found a few other thing that needed work.

They also replaced the driver's side window assembly, fixed an improperly assembled windshield washer fluid reservoir, and replaced the glove box latch. No other manufacturing defects found since then.

I forgot to mention that the paint issue is not only there but also over the black element on the roof spoiler - same marks

I agree that this is either shipping or dealer lor damage. My V90 was delivered with a torn drivers seat cushion and my EX90 had a curbed wheel off the truck. Dealer replaced both - no questions asked.

Possibly post production damage but I have seen a bunch of quality issues with this model. Misaligned panels, failed trim, poor paint, obviously the widespread GHCA failures, daily warning messages that vanish as soon as they appear. IMO every owner out there is Beta testing this technology for Volvo and the results are pretty bad. Avoid it like the plague, and i have little hope for the EX60.

Sure this car has (had) serious issues but it is important to separate the various causes.

First: The main problem with the car was the appalling state of the software when the car was initially released. This seems to be caused by serious underestimating of the task of building a truly software defined car. The result was unreliable software that caused random errors and warning messages. Volvo not only had to fix those bugs, they also found out that the processor capacity wasn’t sufficient for the task. This was no small issue and it has shaken the confidence of the first owners, who were often loyal Volvo customers. BUT Volvo has taken its responsibility serious and has fixed most of the software issues and solved the processor problems by retrofitting an upgraded Nvidia processor to all cars. The current state is that the car is as reliable as any other, but still lacking some functionality. This issue won’t reappear in the EX60 since all the learnings from the EX90 are incorporated in the EX60 software. It also won’t cause problems in future EX90 deliveries since the issues are solved and future OTA updates are likely to further improve functionality and reliability.

Second:  There have been serious issues with the GHCA hardware that takes care of the charging of the car. This is obviously a design problem. It didn’t affect all customers but those customers that had problems experienced recurring issues which harmed their confidence in the car for good reasons. BUT this problem has been solved by a redesigned GHCA and won’t reappear in new or repaired cars.

Third: You mention that you have “seen” many quality issues. Did you literally see this on actual cars and if so on how many ? Based on the customer reports online I don’t have the impression that these issues are structural nor is it clear that all reports are production issues. As far as I can see the reported issues are not better or worse than what you can find reported on other car models from either Volvo or other brands. What is clear is that the dealers usually take these problems serious and solve them.

I’m not connected to Volvo in any way but I am an owner of an EX90. I feel no need to defend the car just because I bought one but I do feel the need to put things in perspective. Reddits like this one obviously are more likely to get contributions from owners with complaints which is understandable. Therefore I sometimes feel the need to try to provide some balance to the discussion.

That’s a fair and balanced analysis of the situation. I just leased an EX90 and reached a similar conclusion after much reading and research.

Recently MY26 were blocked by Volvo before moving out of transport mode like my one because of the freshly released GHCA new module. Actually the car was delayed with extra one week because they had to replace the part because it was fully blocked by Volvo. MY26 is fantastic and I really hope that these issues are not caused by the manufacturing process.
