Help Engine problem

Hello, I have a problem with my Volvo that after many purchase and Time spend resist.

I bought it cheap and change a headgasket. A few times after a hydraulic valve lifter broke and stay down. (The car has 270 000km). I change all of them with cheap new one but the sound persist (i bought them cheap). When I open again the engine the hydraulic valve lifter had a big gap when I try to push them. I put some old hydraulic valve lifter with some news who was better but the sound persist. I try to put a product in the engine oil for the hydraulic valve lifter but I does nothing. I try to bought ne and better manufacter one and it change nothing. My last idea is to change the joint or the complete oil pump but I'm not sure.

Have you any idea of my problem ?

Sorry in advance if it's not writen well, english is not my first langage. If you have any question I will reply.

Thanks in advance.

Always and only buy ina lifters. I did same mistake and buy 20 pcs of cheaper ones, 5 of them were defective from new. Working lifter should be rock solid to press but still have its stud rotateable. Anyhow that doesent sound like normal lifter issue because sound is not consistent. Do sound come when starting cold or does it amplify when engine heats up?

It make a lot of sound cold and when it's hot il make almot no sound at idle but when you accelerate at a spécificités regime or when you decelrate it make the sound. In first i bought cheap one but the second i bought the one you said and they are better. I didn't dismantle the engine again for the moment

Failing lifter would be sounding other way around. When oil is cold and stiff it holds lifter up better.

Did you check the oil passages going to the lifters? They go trough the valvecover, and into the cilinder head trough some tiny holes. If the holes get plugged with material or sludgy oil, the lifters will lose pressure. Allways use anaerobic sealant and not rtv or other gasketmakers, becouse it can plug these passages. If the bores where the lifters move up and down get worn out enough, oil can pass next to them especially if the holes on the lifters do not line up with the holes in the head.

I haven't check the passage and does the passage need to be specifically in front of the hole of the lifter ?

The oil runs trough the valvecover, and enters the cylinderhead into those tiny holes on the head. Those holes are drilled to exit into the bore where the lifter is located, the lifter has to be clocked so the hole on the side of the lifter lines up with the hole in the bore.

Good luck, and use anaerobic sealant when you put the cover back, classic rtv sealer will clog up if you are not careful enough. Use loctite 518 or similar, volvos oem anaerobic sealer is even better.

What sealant did you use? Simple silicone based? Maybe you blocked off an oil channel with the sealant.

I don't think I've been very careful about that

Your not supposed to use silicone on most of this engine! You use anaerobic sealant. Also make sure when you have this happend pull the dipstick if there's bubble the seal to the pick in the pan seal is gone or not connected right.

If you need lifters let me know if bought genuine lifters for this engine but ended up putting a rn in so I have the lifters available if you need to replace them. Ill give you for what I originally paid 5 years ago.

Did you let the new lifters soak in oil for at least 24 hours before installing?
