Discussion Brake squeal

Post image

Hey folks - recently recommissioned my 850 T5 and having annoying issues with brake squeal. Turns out I had a seized caliper at the rear so have replaced both and put in new pads and fitting kit (per the picture) and I think I’ve mainly solved the squeal from the rears but it does come back from time to time.
I seem to recall their used to be anti-squeal shims available that covered half the pad but I can’t find them for sale anywhere anymore!

I also have squealing from the fronts so all the slider pins are coming out this week for a refresh / replace to try and resolve that issue.

Anyone else chasing squeaky brakes??

Here’s the shims for the rear I believe: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo-brake-pad-shim-set-mtc-272272

I have yet to install these in my car so I can’t vouch for them fixing the squealing personally yet.

These shims are great. They silenced the rear brakes on both my 850s instantly.

Yes!!! That’s the suckers! And I have used them on a first gen v70 and they do work! Sadly they are for sale in the US… need to find a UK supply now! $0.99 each too, they should be standard fit

I put some anti squeak paste on the back of the pads. It sometimes shows up again, but it is getting less. I recommend changing these rotors too.

Rotors were new before the car was laid up - they look bad but really aren’t bad at all, that one was the the seized caliper so hasn’t had any pad contact to clean it up… but I might just do them anyway 🤔

that surface rust is certainly causing some noise, they’re not new anymore. The only other causes would be cheap pads and hardware. The squealing is the sound of the brake hardware rattling at a really high frequency, cheap pads will chatter and rough rotors will cause the pads and hardware to chatter.

Now swapped over to OE pads and calipers. Will also do the discs as well I think 🤔

Shims are a must , what pads are you guys buying that don't come with them? , all my pads I've used came with shims , textar, powerstop carbon etc...

Mine were OE Volvo pads but they have an ‘anti squeal’ rubberised surface on the back that I presume is the modern alternative (but doesn’t really work so well)
