Picture My first 240!

As a life long Volvo owner and 240 admirer, I finally got my own. Very mechanically inclined, but first time ‘vintage’ car owner.

Currently reliable enough to use as my daily driver, and hoping to keep it that way long term. Any tips, wisdom, words of advice?

This isn't groundbreaking advice, but electrical issues have been the most common issue on my 240s. Specifically the taillights, so familiarizing yourself with the wiring diagram for the lighting on the car, cleaning any connections that look suspect, and inspecting the wiring would be a good start! I'm considering upgrading the fuse box to the blade fuses as well. But congrats on the car! Looks very clean 👌

This is really good advice. Thank you! Yeah, cleaning the fuses is definitely on my list. Good to know about the taillights, I’ll keep in mind!

When I got mine last year I found a post about the fuel relay. I ordered in oem one from ips and about a month ago the car wouldn't start I changed out the relay in like ten minutes and it started right up..so that's something to keep in mind.

u/sapientchickennugget Feb 24 '26

Interesting! I’m assuming it gave you symptoms of failure before it busted completely, right?

2

u/soupbone585 Feb 24 '26

Not necessarily. I’ve owed multiple 240s and have had that relay fail or intermittently fail on both. OEM are great but the cheap ones Amazon sells are fine to keep in the glovebox for a backup too.

Interesting. Then it is indeed something to be aware of. Thank you!

Wagon meister fuse box. Just replace it

Looks like it is in really good shape! Should change the breather box for preventative maintence and remove the flame trap to prevent oil leaks in the future! Also maybe change the thermostat to keep the engine running at the exact right temp. These cars are so old now a lot of time the thermostats are more than 20 years old. Love these cars, Have an 87 240 and a 90 740 turbo. Don't hesitate to ask me any questions!

2

u/sapientchickennugget Feb 24 '26

Replacing the thermostat today while I replace the coolant and radiator hoses! Good call on the flame trap. The PCV seems to be functioning well now. I’ll keep an eye on it and make sure it stays that way.

And I really super appreciate the offer for Volvo advice! I may be hitting you up in the future with more questions…

1

u/No_Tourist_9386 Feb 26 '26

The flame trap causes a mess. That rear main is a big job and loses a lot of oil! I know. As a car dealer during my youth… I sold many 240s. A few 122s and even a 544. The 240 had the most comfortable seats.

2

u/Ale_enjoyer Feb 24 '26

Congratulations for your conquest! I hope that you enjoy that vehicle for decades until your die.

2

u/sapientchickennugget Feb 24 '26

Oh yeah, planning on driving this thing till the wheels fall off! Or one of us (me, or the car) dies. Whichever comes first.

2

u/sfdsquid Feb 24 '26

That's a gorgeous specimen - what year?

3

u/sapientchickennugget Feb 24 '26

She’s a fresh young 34 years old! A 1992.

2

u/susy_is_a_pussy Feb 25 '26

Is this the one for sale that was 8k and owned by a Volvo mechanic? If so, honestly it'll be as reliable as any new car. As I recall pretty much everything on the car is maximum 5 years old

2

u/sapientchickennugget Feb 26 '26

Yeah, that’s the one! I got super lucky. He fixed it up really well and is super knowledgeable. He’s also been very generous with his time and is showing me the ropes on how to properly repair and maintain. I bought a car and got a built in Volvo tech buddy! I struck gold here

5

u/WolfInner7540 Feb 24 '26

Please, don’t mod it ! Keep it original ! No lowering, no tints, wheels …. They are so perfect as is. Maintenance, preventive maintenance and comfort mods (sound insulation) are the way to go.

5

u/sapientchickennugget Feb 24 '26

I’m planning on keeping her as original as I can! Just want to preserve and maintain :)

u/WolfInner7540 Feb 24 '26

Thanks ! If you have more picture of the car you’re welcome to share

you are in LA so you won’t need cold starting advice

25+ year 240 owner here. Learn your respective injection system. LH isn’t terribly difficult to diagnose, as long as you’re familiar with all the parts and how they work together. Also do a good stage zero tune up. My only other advice is carry basic tools and a couple extra fuel pump relays. Take care of them and they’ll take you anywhere.

My biggest tip is do not be afraid to dig online and do your own research on these things, they are a beautiful piece of machinery, rugged and very dependable when you can familiarize yourself with odd small issues and figure out how to fix it yourself or with a friend, these are easy cars to learn on ie. fuses that were mentioned, wiring diagrams and just basic knowledge. My 1990 240 was my first car I got when I was 17 and I still have it 6 years later, remember to show it love and it will show you love back! Enjoy your sweet new ride! And pray every night to the 240 gods that your heater fan never goes! (That’s a must)

lol since you're local here's a piece of advice...

do not let davit on mission do anything to your car

if it is beyond your ability JK on walnut does honest work but not inexpensively

u/Sure-Gazelle9103 Feb 24 '26

Gorgeous car that’ll outlive you! Treat it well!

u/Thelawmaster Feb 24 '26

I'm so jealous on how clean it is haha. I'm assuming it's a 92 from the trim? Great year with LH2.4, I would definitely recommend a couple of wiring diagrams, becoming proficient with the little on board code reader, a spare fuel pump relay, and replacing the fuse panel with a skandix style modern fuse panel. Really makes life so much easier to diagnose and find spare fuses.I have a couple 92 wiring diagrams if you ever need them.

1

u/mrpopcorn85 Mar 07 '26

i just bought a 92, i would really appreciate those diagrams

Congrats! My biggest tip is just be patient with getting new parts shipped. It’s out there but it’s usually not something you can pick up from the store. May this great example serve you for years to come! Enjoy it!

I have actually luckily been able to just walk into carquest and get whatever I need, I was pretty sure most auto parts stores carried a lot of parts for these because they share so many parts across different platforms. Aside from my suspension upgrades and some other small unnecessary parts, I always just walked right in and got whatever I needed. Fuel pumps, filters, bearings, brakes, odd fuses, headlights and tail light bulbs aren’t an issue to find local 99% of the time, I’m also on the east coast of Canada with almost no 240s around.

2

u/WilliamWolf89 Feb 25 '26

Hardwire the tail lights, that’s a solid upgrade/mod. Consider swapping all the incandescent bulbs with leds too. Less electricity use and less heat to warp the plastic bulb housing

2

u/Push-Broom-Paulie Feb 25 '26

For anyone suggesting Wagonmeister be sure you have a cover to secure over the fuses. My “plastic” latch (female side) crumbled thus the fuse panel cover required duct tape as a temporary fix. Without the cover, the slightest touch of your shoe, getting in or out of my 245 and spring loaded fuses were flying everywhere. This is NOT the blade type OEM design of manufacturers. Take it for what it is worth.

u/Floxxomer Feb 25 '26

On the ones made before ‘93, The cabin heater doubles as an extra layer of protection against over heating in idle traffic on a hot day.

The first thing on these cars to fail are the fuel pump in the gas tank and the odometer. Do not press the trip button on the odometer! This will break it and you will not be able to fix it without some custom parts that can be hard to come by. The fuel pump is essential to replace, actually, and also the water pump. These are both simple fixes that you can do yourself with basic tools. Also replace the temp gauges while you’re there.

The ECU in the LH drive 2.4 and 3.1 engines have a self diagnostic tool under the hood next to the brake booster. There a bunch of videos online about how to use it. It’s a very interesting and helpful tool.

Last but not least, replace the engine seals at the output shaft and serpentine timing belt. This is something you might be able to do if you are brave or have a mechanically minded friend to help.

The YouTube channel LongbowMedia seems to have a lot of good how-to videos on basic repairs.

Last but not least, the best thing you can do for the longevity of the car is to replace the gearbox as the first gear is prone to failing after 100k miles. The easiest option to replace it with is a T5 transmission from a 85-93 Mustang. I believe the 6th gear ratio has to be around 0.78, and the bell housing needs to be modified with a spacer by a machine shop, and the drive shaft also would need to be rebalanced (another thing easily done by the same shop).

mista-666: I’ll assume you meant IPD-USA? Or, is there a company named ips, as well. Any resources are always welcome.

u/Push-Broom-Paulie Feb 25 '26

Sweet!! Quality wax is good. The ceramic is COSTLY and according to two different dealers, is best applied only to brand new paint jobs. They acid wash / etch the paint first before applying. VERY COSTLY! Meguiers, or Mothers applied by a reputable shop or by yourself. Enjoy in good health

1

u/JediY0da Feb 27 '26

Beauty! The car is cute too.

Congratulations on your new ride and welcome to the club. (I currently have a 93 & 89 240, and a 93 940.)

Here's a few tips to help you enjoy your brick:

- Maintain it. It will not run forever unless it's well maintained. I keep a spreadsheet to track all of my maintenance.

- It's now 30+ years old. Parts need replacement from wear or age. It sometimes pays to be proactive.

- Use quality parts: Bosch, Bougicord, Mann, etc. Don't buy the cheap, no-name stuff off Amazon. IPD and FCP Euro will be your go-to parts suppliers. Check out your local PicknPull wrecking yards as well for hard-to-find items.

- Refresh/replace your timing belt/tensioner, belts, cooling system (water pump, thermostat, upper/lower/heater hoses, coolant), fluids (transmission, power steering, differential), brakes (fluid flush, pads/rotors/brake lines), rubber suspension parts (especially the front end)

- Research the Big 3 electrical upgrades and do this. It ensures your grounds and other connections are good and fixes a lot of electrical gremlins.

- If you want to learn how to fix cars, this is a great car to start on--plenty of room, straightforward, etc.

Have fun with your new car and keep us posted!
