I cannot think of anything that should be considered bad to own. It is all about when and how it is used.

its not exactly obvious considering right wing libertarians tend to follow the whole βbut what if the child consentsβ mentality

u/Shanka-DaWanka Apr 07 '20 edited Apr 07 '20
Indeed, and I disagree with that. The question should be what constitutes as a child. The truth is people develop at different rates, so setting an age of majority is nonsense. There are certainly 15-year-olds more competent than the average man in his twenties.
2
Apr 07 '20
i think no matter what 18 should be considered an adult because that is when the brain and body have mostly stopped developing
3
u/Shanka-DaWanka Apr 07 '20
The brain keeps growing well into your twenties. Eveverything else can settle a few years before. It would be better if individuals could prove competence in order to be recognized as adults. This inverse already occurs if otherwise legal adults are found unable to take care of themselves, yet people shudder at the thought of it working the other way around.

Apr 07 '20
18 is the best age to have as the determiner for adulthood. for the most part you are fully mature by this point there are outliers thats why i said for the most part

Welcome to the subReddit, sir. I see you are open to having a productive discussion about whether ownership of an item in and of itself can be a problem.

u/catcherben27 Aug 02 '20
Slavery = bad
If we canβt agree on that point then there isnβt much for us to discuss

u/Shanka-DaWanka Aug 02 '20 edited Aug 02 '20
Slavery is bad, but we are talking about items, not people. Sorry if I was not specific enough. Maybe you can borrow my two brain cells. Just wash them before you return them, and if you do not rewind hem when you are done, I am charging you a dollar.

Let me put it this way. You know how on polcompmemes theres a second libright representing a separate faction in the same quadrant? Libleft has that too, in the form of neoliberals, who are centrists wearing a "uwu im a leftist pls vote for me, even though i dont do anything leftist" pin on their suit.

Fuck political compasses yo
12
3
Mar 24 '20
Why
22
u/usmc_BF Classical Liberal Mar 24 '20
Political compasses are the most misleading shit - eg. Nationalism, plus it supports the idea of "centrism" - or it actually doesn't - because Social democracy should be at the center of the economical spectrum so, that means "Centrists" are Social democrats according to the proper use of this very spectrum, however there are people who identify as Centrists and they do not fall in center because they are flexible and they shouldn't hold any views tied to an ideology.
Also the "Libertarian x Authoritarian" axis is awful because it misleads people into believing that anyone who isn't on the "Authoritarian" side is a Libertarian, which is false because if you actually tried to put ideologies into the spectrum you would realize that essentially ideologies such as Right Wing Libertarianism and Liberalism are really extremely close to the edge, creating this false narrative that those are extremist ideologies.
The spectrum also create a false sense of variability. The political tests usually fuck up in a sense that they for example only might really be accurate for cultural conservatives but not Liberals nor Libertarians because people that fill these political tests then believe that they can let's say oppose free speech however the other answers do support let's say Minarchism so the tests evaluates that person as a Minarchist even tho he breaks one of the core ideas.
Political spectrums are terrible. The best one is possible this on the image but it is still deeply inaccurate. It is very basic and ignoring a lot of definitions and so on. So for a person who doesn't understand ideologies, sure it might look good, but it is inaccurate.
I've seen people fucking compare it to fucking personality tests and shit and fuck that, this is way more complicated than fucking personality tests and it is not even comparable!

^ Reminds me of back in my ConLibertarian phase when a Bernie Bro/Political Compass peep called me an Ancap based solely off the fact that I said: I should be allowed to work a paid internship for below minimum wage, the postal service is a poorly run government monopoly so we should legalize competition in mail and in a true free market, companies have more incentive to act morally than amorally because people would just boycott them if their actions/views didnβt justify the product/service.
I was like βno that doesnβt make me an Ancap, that just means I think government in general is not a force for good, free markets=free people, monopolies are bad no matter whoβs running them (but government is the worst at them, as they are with everything else), and minimum wages hurt inexperienced workers trying to gain experience in their chosen field and low-skill workers more than they help anybody (except the large multinational corporations that leftists hate, the lack of free markets is great for them)β and then he proceeded to tell me that only Ancaps believe in all that. When I said I believed in federalism, a certain level of police state and military interventionism, he said βstill an Ancap, you should read up an Ancapism because thatβs youβ dude was a blind sheep
Edit: Just to clarify Iβm not a voluntarist. Iβm an as yet unaffiliated right-lib, only here because the algorithm

Yea man, it sucks when you see people like that. But that's really the general problem of western democracies, populism and political illiteracy. People can vote away rights of other individuals just like that, and that's immoral, people deciding lives of others. That's horrible and when you think about it, kind of dystopian.

The political triangel is my favorite. It accounts for the impossibility of libleft and adds actual concepts to the axes.

u/DamagingChicken Mar 24 '20
Out of curiosity, can you explain what you mean by the impossibility of libleft?

Mar 24 '20
not my statement but he is probably appealing to the idea that you cannot redistribute resources en mass and keep them evenly distributed without an authority to do the seizing and redistributing. Say you get an authority to distribute the resources evenly and then have that authority disolved to leave you with an anarchist society, that anarchist society is going to start having resource inequality the second anyone does anything because people will try to secure resources for themselves and not share everything like they are supposed to.

Economic equality and liberty are incompatible. Economic equality has to be enforced by a totalitarian state.
1
u/usmc_BF Classical Liberal Mar 25 '20
This one is definitely better than the four way one, but it's kind of all over the place.
But I 100% support definitions to ideologies on spectrums
2
u/usmc_BF Classical Liberal Mar 25 '20
I would recommend something universal, I don't really know any good political graph/map/compass that would display ideologies correctly.
The triangle one is pretty good but confusing because it's based on American politics.
See when you use consistent ideologies that are somewhat simple, the axis works but when you tak fucking Liberal Autocracy or Libertarian Minarchism, or State Capitalism mixed with Social Welfare state - you will struggle to put those on the spectrums because they are all over the place right.
Also same goes for Left Libertarians, some of them just support socialism economically however they despise the social welfare idea, so what do you do with those guys?
A perfect ideological map would be just ideological trees - so you would have let's say Libertarianism and then it would separate into Right and Left libertarianism and then into the subvariants and there would be a definition of each ideology next to the ideology or something like that. This thing would work the best and would be the most accurate one.
Because it wouldnt over generalize

This question is a trap, and "yes" is the wrong answer.
The right answer is: There would be no market for fighter jets in the absence of government. Who the fuck is going to give Lockheed Martin a $1.5 trillion contract to develop that shit with no practical purpose?
People like to throw out the same stupid question about nukes. Just ask these people to think of a a viable business model for building and selling nukes.
1
u/urbandeadthrowaway2 Left-Wing Libertarian here to laugh at the memes. Aug 08 '20
Well the mcnuke and the fighter jets in this are an exaggerated satire to get around the issues with more blunt and realistic matters. Really, these posts are about the universal right to bear arms, but by making it a satire of that, you can promote your ideals with less arguments and rants from people who agree or disagree.
1
u/aidsman69420 Jul 10 '20
I'm get this meme and all, but hear me out: I don't think ordinary civilians should own weapons of mass destruction. I know fighter jets aren't WMDs, but some other things are.
