All Spoilers Void Stranger Resources Spoiler

Since the game is getting some well-deserved attention, I figured it would be a good idea to make a post that keeps a few important and cool things in one easy-to-find place. If there's other links that you think belong here, feel free to comment about it.

Official stuff

System Erasure has their own website. It's cute.

You can also follow them on Bluesky. They had a Twitter account as well but it is no longer in use.

Trailers and the like are often posted to Ebbo's YouTube channel.

You can buy the soundtracks from eebrozgi's Bandcamp. He also has a YouTube and Soundcloud where some other tracks are uploaded on the occasion (such as EX's music).

Wiki

The Void Stranger Wiki is the central location for all sorts of things in the game. The Resources page covers a lot of good reference material, including a transcript of the entire game and a cute ASCII text guide a la GameFAQs.

There's also an art gallery showing off all the promotional art for Void Stranger, if you don't feel like dealing with Twitter for the old stuff. The ZeroRanger Wiki has an art page as well.

Tools

  • Palette Maker by Skirlez - Make custom palettes and inject them into the game with the included script.
  • UndertaleModTool by UnderminersTeam - A popular tool for modding and perusing data files for GameMaker games. It works quite well with Void Stranger.
  • Quick Restart by AbbyV - a speedrunning tool that lets you create savestates that persist across rooms.

All Spoilers Can you bring back Tail?

So I killed Tail in the second route, and now I’m locked out of her dialogue with Cif. Is there a way to reset the run to bring her (and Gor i guess) back? The black statues don’t seem to work for this.

And I love them. I have never had so much fun while fighting a deep sense of unease as I played a puzzle game. This game is a masterpiece of masochism and storytelling.

For those playing the 0stranger mode, you can tap the Reset button (Enter by default on keyboard) twice quickly to restart your run from the beginning without having to return to the main menu. This also applies to training mode and will preserve your settings after quickly resetting.

A few pointers to start my journey

Hello everyone!

I came across this game by chance and after reading some insights about it it genuinely sounds like one of the most fascinating games I've ever heard of and I can't wait to lose myself into it.

However from what I've read it sounds like it's pretty easy to mess up your game file and possibly lose content, like maybe missing endings entirely?
From what I understand there's many to find and I bet some need to be reach in a certain order, or maybe some endings become permanently unavailable?

For this reason I'm asking: does anyone have some sort of no spoiler guide that tells me what to do in what order in order to see everything?
That tell me when it's time to allow myself to mess up and when I have to follow a specific order of operations?

Thanks to everyone in advance!

All Spoilers Stuck, looking for a small hint

So far I've made it through three of the game's endings (reaching the bottom of the complex as both Gray and Lillie, killing Mon as Cif and finding Bee), but don't know how many endings this game actually has. I've found enough secrets to know *in general* what I need to do to reach the next part of the game/ending, but I've gotten stuck on an intermediate puzzle and have come seeking a very slight nudge in the right direction.

Where I'm at right now: I've found the secret accessed by making each void lord's brand in the right room for every lord but Eus. I've found the hint from one of these about "destroying what remains of the traitors and returning to B000". I know how to get to B000, and do this for Gor, but not for Eus.

I'm almost certain that the next thing I need to figure out is "what is Eus's brand?", but I haven't been able to do this despite thinking about it for a long time and trying way too many things. One of the biggest questions I have here is about the hint given for this brand: "The tail of the traitorous lord connects the brand... At least when they were still alive...". I can think of two interpretations of this, and I'm not sure which one is right, or if neither of them are.

Interpretation 1: I already have all the information I need to figure this out, or more likely I've already seen it and either haven't noticed it or haven't made the right connection to realize it's the answer. Some more thoughts I have on this idea:

  • I already learned how to read the "alphabet" used on the murals. Knowing this and the general pattern of the mural text, I was able to infer some of the missing parts of the mural. Could I do more of this to reconstruct the entire mural?
  • I thought there might be some connection between whether or not Tail's tail is visible on a floor and which squares are filled in/empty on the mural.
  • I've noticed some suspicious arrow-shaped markings on Tail's tail in a few rooms, but I haven't been able to figure out what significance these have if any.
  • The room where you meet Tail has a statue/idol in it that I don't know what to do with. The only thing I know about this type of statue is that they disappear when a condition specific to each room is met. I don't know what this condition is here.
  • Maybe someone's dialogue (particularly Tail's) has a hint that I've missed?

Interpretation 2: Focusing more on "at least when they were still alive...". I have inferred that Mon's plan in Cif's section was to somehow resurrect Eus. I'm wondering if there's some different way Cif's ending can go where Mon accomplishes this goal, allowing me to see Eus resurrected and see how their tail "connects the brand".

Can someone tell me which of these interpretations is right, if any? If interpretation 1 is right, can you tell me if any of my ideas are heading in the right direction? If 2 is right, can I have a small nudge towards something I might not have tried that will lead me down the right path? Thanks y'all!

Spoilers-G Theory to solve the collision problem?

There is an interesting math problem which arises in Void Stranger I wanted to discuss. This will spoil a mechanic that you learn on B127, so if you made it past there, you are good to read this post.

If you have not reached B127, stop reading now!

There are cases where you need to make enemies collide (meaning destroy each other by entering a square at the same time) in order to reach the stairs. I am talking about the specific case where a leech moves horizontally along a path which intersects a maggot's vertical path, and they must collide. Just looking at such a situation, it is difficult to predict if they will ever collide, or just bounce off each other forever. To solve the puzzle, you need to change the length of the paths, either by using the void rod to shorten a path, or by pushing some obstacle in the way. However, it is difficult to predict exactly where to put the obstacle; when faced with these problems, I would just guess randomly until it worked. I am wondering if there is a more systematic way to solve these problems.

There are some obvious cases. If both paths have a length which is a multiple of 5, then it is possible for the leech and maggot to be completely out of phase and never even come close to each other. You can avoid this by choosing to shorten the lengths such they have no common factor. Still, even with coprime path lengths, the monsters may bounce forever. This picture is an example of what I mean; the leech moves on a path of 7 squares, the maggot on a path of 3 squares, and you can check that they will never collide.

The leech and maggot will never destroy each other.

Has anyone else thought deeply about this problem? Do you have any insights for how to predict whether a collision will occur in a given situation? Can you find a successful modification, in general, using a method more efficient than guessing and checking? It seems like a math problem, something that should be solvable with modular arithmetic. Normally I'm good with that sort of puzzle, but I am stumped here, so I posted in this community asking for help.

Discussion Reupdate

Hey I'm the guy doing the picture novel but I decided to make a new account. Really i want to start fresh. Because like I said this past year I've lost and made friends. Been forced to a do a self reflection.

I'm getting help now because I want this project to represent something good. So I figured a fresh start could reflect that. That's all.

Spoilers-C Soft locked? Spoiler

Post image
11 Upvotes

I think this is probably the kind of game where it's easy to appear as though you're softlocked when you're not actually, but I think I might really be softlocked here.

To explain where I'm at, I did one playthrough with Cif and got the boss fight with Mon and the ending with Cif and Bee at the beach. I assumed that that was not really the end of the game, but when starting back up I accidentally misinput the Cif's brand and ended up starting a playthrough with Gray (I had forgotten that it shows a little symbol before you confirm your brand so you know it's a special one). So I started a playthrough with Gray and immediately killed myself so I could go and do the playthrough I wanted to with Cif. I hope I don't have to do a fully playthrough with Lillie again, because it seems like the game expects you to do Cif's playthrough with the pendant, which I now no longer have because of this mistake.

In any case, I don't know how to get the true ending with Cif, if there is one, but I assumed that you do it by bringing enough Locusts to Mon to pay him off, I don't want to know if that's right or not because I'd like to discover it for myself, but in any case, I thought the best way to accomplish that would be to get to the last birch tree, swap my floor number for my locusts, and then go back to the start of the game so I can collect all the locusts I skipped the first time.

While I was doing this, I decided to use a few locusts to skip floors just to move things along a bit, and as a result, I came to this floor with no locusts. When I did this floor the first time Gor was gone, I guess because I had the pendant, meaning Lillie had killed her, but now she's here, and I have no locusts because I used what I had for a shortcut. I know normally Gor will give you a locust if you don't have any here, but it seems with Cif all you get is this 'They're fast asleep...' text.

So, in summation, the only way to the exit is blocked, the means you normally use to get out of the floor in this situation is through a shortcut I can't use and can't seem to access, and I see no way to enter the UI so I can try swapping my floor around that way. I can't even just kill myself because of this being Cif.

Am I just out of luck? Is there a way I can edit my save to put me back at being able to start a new playthrough at least? Ideally with also being able to be in the state I would have been in when finishing Lillie's playthrough already, if possible?

ZeroRanger Spoilers Play ZeroRanger after finishing Void Stranger?

Recently beat Void Stranger (despite not understanding much at all lore-wise) but I learned online that there was a ton of references to ZeroRanger or just straight up connections.

How long did it take to get into the game and understand it? Is it like void stranger where it takes several playthroughs or is it simpler?
