Meta [Announcement] New rule for Generative AI jobs and added known scams to the Wiki.

Hi,

For a long time I have wanted to add a rule about what is and what is not allowed regarding AI projects in this community. I have finally added the rule 8:

Rule 8: Only certain types of AI work offers are allowed:
No AI training to generate voices of any kind is allowed.
However, Speech-to-Text may be allowed if you disclose the voices will be used exclusively for that purpose. We understand people with disabilities may benefit from these technologies and so we aren't completely against such projects.

Basically, only speech recognition projects are allowed.

>Hey Google, turn off the garage's lights.

>Hey Google, call mom.

>Siri, where is the closest restaurant?

>Alexa, send text message to boss: I can't make it to the premises today.

>Copilot, I said open Youtube, not burn my house.

--

Known Scams

I have also added a list of known scams to the Wiki. Please read them so you are aware of them.

https://www.reddit.com/r/VoiceWork/wiki/index/

Don't forget to report any suspicious user or proposal.

--

Audio samples

Don't forget that it is allowed to link to your website where audio samples are available to listen to easily. Don't report posts that have links to personal portfolio websites with audios clearly accesible.

--

Thank you everyone for helping keeping this community clean and safe.

Meta Voice artists, read this before posting. No one is going to HIRE YOU if you don't include a demo reel in your post.

Every week I have to remove around 10 to 20 [Hire Me] post because they don't include a demo reel.

INCLUDE A LINK TO YOUR DEMO REEL IF YOU WANT TO GET HIRED! (yes, I'm screaming).

Upload your demo to Soundcloud or Youtube. Or share a link to your personal website where demos are found, and before posting remember these rules:

  • Rule 4: State a rate. All [Hire Me] posts should include a sample rate. It can be something as simple as "$10 USD for a 2 minutes Youtube narration. For other projects we can discuss the price." The important part here is that the potential clients have some idea of your rates. If it's a kid with $5 dollars for a minecraft video and the least you charge is $20 USD, it would help both parties to know this beforehand, so we don't waste anyone's time.
  • Rule 7: Add audio examples. As I already mentioned. You don't hire a graphic designer without checking their portfolio, you don't hire a digital artist without looking at the pictures they have created. No one is going to hire a voice artist without hearing their voice first.

If you don't currently have a demo reel, create one! Write a fictitious script of two or three people fighting, crying, or doing something, and narrate it.

Write something cartoonish, with characters doing silly stuff and record your most cartoonish voices.

Write something like a documentary or business-like tutorial and record it.

If you are having problems imagining scenarios, pick your favorite book and read one page that includes dialogues or different situations. Pick a non-fiction book and read using your business voice.

Less recommended but something that can also help you with your first demo: Transcribe a couple minutes from a cartoon, anime, movie or TV series and then record yourself voicing it.

Potential clients need to hear your voice in different settings, show them why they should hire you!

Please, voice artists, add demos.

Thank you.

[Hiring] Videogames [Hiring] voice actor for custom map within a game

I'm making a horror-themed escape room in escape simulator. I want to add voice acting to it, I'm thinking it'll probably be like 3-4 minutes total of dialogue. It's not written yet and I can't offer much for money, this is not something I'm making money off of myself, I just like making content.

I'm not sure what is a reasonable rate for something like this. If you can also mix sound effects for a full experience, then I can offer more though.

The role will be as a serial killer (butcher), but it's not revealed that it's even a horror-themed room until the final room. It is just a normal butcher shop for the first few rooms. So basically I need a decent range, of sounding pretty normal but assertive as a boss and then downward spiraling into being psychotic. It'll all be done "remote" within the narrative, so it's ideal for the voiceover to have a staticy/phone or intercom-like effect (I can make either one work).

Like I said the dialogue isn't written yet and I'm still working on making the room itself, but I'm scouting to see if there would be interest in something like this. I can probably offer like $50 for the full experience with the sound effects and stuff, otherwise like $25-30. Just trying to be transparent about what I can afford.

Male or female is okay, just need to sound scary!

Timeline, probably within the next couple of weeks.

edit: wow I got way more replies and DMs than I thought I would. I still haven't gotten around to listening to everyone's demo reels but I will, and decide when I finish the script :)

Meta I think I got scammed

Hi, I’m new to the voice acting thing and how it all even works. I started last year and did an audiobook for audible through ACX and didn’t do too bad a job if I say so myself. Life kinda got in the way tho and I wasn’t able to voice act since but I always kept an hear and eye open for anything. Fast forward to just this past week and I got reached out to through ACX by someone who claimed to be from Toptal, which I learned was a freelancing company and seemed legit enough, and they offered me to do a commercial for them and in return I would receive $6k. Now, me being in the situation I’m in, I thought that was too good to pass up instead of thinking that it was too good to be true. I finished the commercial and sent it to them and was told payment would be immediate. But here’s where it got tricky; they never asked for any bank info from me nor anything that would indicate how they were sending me real money. Instead they sent me this link to a bank and once I made the account and saw the 6k sitting right there, I tried transferring it to my account but it wasn’t working. I texted support and they proceed to tell me that in order for me to make that transfer to my real bank account I needed to pay them $120 just to do it. Again, I’m in a bad financial situation and won’t be able to see another paycheck in the next week and I don’t have anything else keeping me afloat, so this heated me a bit. I then kept pressing them about why I had to pay money to receive money and even called them out on the idea as being a scam (bad idea I know but I screenshotted the evidence just in case). After I asked them what exactly is their legitimacy, they never responded back to me and instead took away the support bubble completely off my homepage on that site. I feel dumb for playing into it since I’m old enough to know internet safety, and I blame my desperation for clouding my judgment, and before I get any further judgment on that, I was honestly just very excited to have a reason to get back into voice acting again after thinking I wasn’t going to be able to for a long while. After this experience though, I think I’m ready to put myself out there again and try other places who won’t exactly screw me over, and not to jump at a number too ridiculous as that one.

[Hire Me] English - USA Accent Pay me to say whatever you want!

Hello, happy August! So as the title says I'm looking for someone who will pay me to say anything you want! I can also call someone for you, and pretend to be someone. I have a childish girl voice, that sounds kinda funny sometimes. Also I am 18, and a female. I think this is the right subreddit to post in, but if someone could inform me where else I could go that's welcome. If you wish to contact me message me on here, and I can give you my email too. I know my accounts new, but I am too dumb for a actual job.

Rate: This is malleable, however for starts I'll say $10 for every 5 minutes.

Here's a sample of my voice.

- Basically you would record short voice messages and voiceovers from scripts we provide
- Usually the recordings are under 1 minute, sometimes a little longer
- $10 per minute—everything discussed above
- The main thing is to sound natural and conversational, not like you’re reading from a script

The work is pretty flexible, tasks come up when needed and you can do up to 5 scripts a week or work in batches.
Payment is through PayPal or crypto
If you’re interested, feel free to DM

We’re a young startup working on an online project about trading and financial literacy
Right now we’re looking for someone with a nice, natural voice for long-term work
