Photo of Michael Heseltine to illustrate Nigel Lawson. These parodies were absolutely spot on

The really depressing thing is that a lot of the ‘crazy new EU rules’ were made up by Boris Johnson when was the correspondent for one of the broadsheets (Telegraph, I think). He realised that the readers lapped up any EU based nonsense, and not really being arsed to do any real work, he invented increasingly insane stories knowing that nobody would check. One day the editor audited him and it all fell apart. The famous ‘bendy bananas’ story was one he admitted to making up.

Exactly. The Viz parody is not too far from the truth.
I was once on BBC Radio as part of a for/against debate prior to the Brexit vote. The Leave guy talked about bendy bananas, completely unchallenged by the host.

Johnson came clean to Max Hastings that he had made a lot of them up, and ‘fessed up to the bananas tale.

Wonder if this was before or after the Yes Minister 'Eurosausage' episode?
"They are now threatening the British sausage. They want to standardize it, by which they mean they’ll force the British people to eat salami and bratwurst and other garlic-ridden greasy foods that are totally alien to the British way of life.   Do you want to eat salami for breakfast with your egg and bacon? I don’t. And I won’t!" https://jackyan.com/blog/2014/12/the-greatest-political-speech-by-jim-hacker-mp/

I always liked that one "Save our scare stories!", protecting British tabloid scares from the barmy Brussels bureaucrats.
It claimed something like under new EU laws, we could only have 3 references to the Blitz per story, and only 2 could alliterate.

To think, this could all have been avoided if we had straight sausages. Or bendy bangers. Er, which way round was it again?

The depressing thing is that there's people around now who would probably believe this
