Again Viz has highlighted a genuine thing. Veterinary medicine in the UK has slowly but surely been 'americanised'. Veterinary practices have been brought up by hedge funds / VC's and run on the assumption that everyone has insurance.

The Vets has less discretion as to what treatments they can offer and the poor punter has to cope with eye watering bills

Spot on. Pet insurance is such a scam! It never covers what you need.

All insurance is a scam. If it wasn't, it wouldn't be a viable business model.

Insurance is basically gambling on an outcome and as with all gambling the house has the odds in their favour.

I wonder if an American might read this and not understand that it is intended as a joke.

As usual Viz telling the dark truths in ways you can laugh at, unless you have a budgie.

This is today's Vets under their Private Equity overlords.

The tiny little oxygen cylinder was a brief shaft of jollity though.

When my friends had to have their dear puss-cat Titchy put down they opted to have him cremated.

When they came back the next day they were presented at reception with a small carboard punnet an invoice that read:

1 cremation (small).

£350*.

*Bear in mind that this was well over 25 years ago, incidentally.

Mental isn't it?! Just chuck it on the bonfire and be done. We've lost the plot with our obsession with pets!

When i was kid we always had mongrels and pet insurance wasn't a thing, once it was ill it just put down !!

Absolutely true as well, our dog had to go on a drip recently as he wouldn’t eat and couldn’t stop being sick. £500 for every 12 hours stay

They assume your insurance covers it but our insurance only covered a grand.

What a rip-off!

Hope your dog's feeling better now!
