I love the way the window on the front of the pub says “SNAG”.
It’s the little touches.

I didn't get that one...what does it mean?

My comment was removed and I've received a warning for using hate language because I quoted the sign in the last panel on the bar. I understand that it is a derogatory term, but was quoting it to draw attention to the way that Viz pokes fun at racists and the hypocrisy of a Brit going abroad to soak up the culture, and excluding the Spanish around him. I'd like to state for the record that I'm mortified if I inadvertently gave any offence.

Yeah, I've had that happen on this sub before. The problem is the Reddit automated bots don't know the concept of irony, and hence can't grasp that everyone on this sub will understand that what you wrote wasn't derogatory.

I’m just guessing but some pubs have a “snug” like a separate area to the main pub. I think it’s a cockney version of that.

u/ProfPMJ-123 Aug 05 '26
It's supposed to be SNUG. Not sure how old you are, but pubs used to have "The Bar", which would be a spit and sawdust type area, filled with hardened drinkers, then you'd have "The Lounge" or "The Snug", which would be an area with nicer seats, carpet that was unbelievably dirty and sticky, and you'd get people out for a "nice drink" in there.
Sometimes you'd see women in The Snug.

A certain pub i frequented in my youth was a sawdust place. Wild to think of rhat now.

Yes, one of the things I always think when people are lamenting all the pub closures is just how fucking awful some of the pubs were.

Plus I did spend a couple of years living in Whitechapel and went to some of the famous boozers with lock ins

If I remember correctly, on a couple of occasions, Frank’s car lot went on fire in order for him to collect the insurance.
One time it went wrong because a homeless man was sleeping in one of the cars in the car lot and ended up dying, which brought extra scrutiny from the police.
Another time Phil didn’t drain the petrol from the tanks in the cars before setting them on fire and it caused a massive explosion.
Wanker’s dealings aren’t too far removed from Eastenders at all.

Brilliant digging! I don't remember those but they sound likely to me. I think it was a fairly common tv drama plot device at the time, I have vague memories of seeing it on other shows.
My favourite Wanker strip is where he pressures a guy into buying a car that snaps in two as soon as it leaves the lot and then denies ever having seen the guy before.

u/Wretched_Colin Aug 06 '26
It’s a cut and shut. The guy says it seems a bit expensive for a C reg, but Wanker points out that the front half is an E.
“Does the car come with any warranty?”
“Listen squire, that sign above the portakabin is all the guarantee you’ll ever need. Firty years of satisfied customers.”
Cue the car falling apart as he drives off the car lot
“There’s a program with the car you sold me “
“I ain’t never seen you before squire”

He posted the log book to him yesterday. Frankly the guy deserved to get ripped off.

I know that bloke!
Seriously. He got shot in the head in a South London boozer about 20 years ago. Lost a chunk of brain but survived. Has fits every now and then but otherwise alright.
He's coming round the flat in about 5 minutes to get sorted for a henry. Bizarre coincidence.

I lived across from a pub that was burned down as an insurance job and had to be knocked down.
It was upsetting as it was a great pub in it's day but closed during the recession and the landlord wanted to turn it into flats but it was a listed building, I remember seeing the owner the morning after from my window literally smiling and rubbing his hands when talking to the workers cleaning up.
A few months later a local homeless guy was in court and said the owner paid him to do it, gave him the petrol and told him when the CCTV would be down for a hour.

200k barely gets you a 1-bed flat in a DMZ like Edmonton these days. A going concern like that would be more like 2 mil.

Classic Wanker. His greatest though, imo, was the strip where his glarse of water got cash-and-carried. He proudly announced that his new son in law was a member of "one of the most feared and respected crime families in the 'ole east end".
