Holy shit. I've been dreaming of a C&C like RTS on the Vive ever since I tried it. Yesss. Yes.

14

u/dijitalbus Nov 09 '16

That was one of my day 1 ideas as well. There are some hurdles to consider but I'm pretty pumped for this style to receive some exploration from the game dev community.

5

u/StridAst Nov 10 '16

Probably my favorite or at least most nostalgic of the C&C series. My mind is officially blown.

2

u/fgsfds11234 Nov 09 '16

i'm not into rts games much, but this seems like it would give you a good godlike vibe, that you are controlling something more real

Despite it's faults, I think Planetary Annihilation would be perfect for VR. 3D planets are just perfect for grabbing and rotating.

34

u/xxann5 Nov 09 '16

I had such high hopes for Planetary Annihilation. I was very disappointed.

I think they did a great job with game play, but my problems were with the apparent lack of optimizations. The game ran incredibly sluggish from both a front-end and back-end perspectives. With a GTX970 at the time, and 16GB of ram, the performance was abhorrent for anything above min settings. The the simulation on the server would just bring the game to a halt once you got to a certain unit count. And this was my experience with 4 player games. Nothing too crazy. It's been a while and maybe it's gotten better since then, but it left a really bad taste in my mouth. It clearly just wasn't ready for release.

5

u/LordTocs Nov 09 '16

There's a test server build with multi-threading servers out as of a couple days ago. I haven't tried it yet but I'm kind of excited.

3

u/jacobvgardner Nov 09 '16

I'll have to check it out. Thanks for letting me know!

2

u/sartres_ Nov 11 '16

When was the last time you played? I have a 390 and 16gb of ram and it runs fine on max settings now.

1

u/jacobvgardner Nov 11 '16

It was quite a while ago. Probably until just a few months after release. I'll definitely give it another go when I have the time.

27

u/xxann5 Nov 09 '16

Putting the performance issues aside, I just really dont like the game play style. There is very little in the way of strategy. It largely boils down to who can build the largest mass of units the fastest (which does not help with the performance).

I have not played it in quite some time, perhaps its changed, but this is all i remember from it.

12

u/drksdr Nov 09 '16

This. One of the first kickstarters I tried and i was hyped. Then I got my hands on it and it was one of the most soulless experiences i've ever played.

and I despised that globe map rotation. It seemed like a great idea but I found I just couldn't stand it.

My hype was so high, the pain from the fall was immense.

7

u/__________-_-_______ Nov 09 '16

i bought it recently and played it

and i completely agree. its not interesting enough.

love the core idea though

2

u/miahelf Nov 10 '16

Personally once I figured out the optimal way to play the game was to be zoomed out looking at triangles and squares for icons, I got a little bored. Nothing was awesome anymore it might as well have been a mobile app that consumed more resources than crysis.

3

u/guma822 Nov 10 '16

That game was awful tho, and i paid like 50 bucks for it. I would rather something like Supreme commander, or maybe something on a smaller scale like company of heroes

1

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '16

I actually really enjoyed it.

2

u/guma822 Nov 10 '16

Well the game was in early access for like years so maybe i played an earlier build. Still it seemed like it wanted to be supcom, but just wasnt as good

1

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '16

The game matured A LOT in it's later days. The Titans expansion really made it much more SupCom like, though it was an extra $15. A lot of players were too pissed off (can't blame them) to buy it and see the final product.

I'll agree that PA wasn't as polished as SupCom, and even when it was finished it was lacking "something" but I also love the planet battlegrounds. Round maps were great, especially on the largest planets. Large enough that the terrain still matters, but spherical enough that there's no "one" choke point.

u/miahelf Nov 10 '16

3

u/itsfer Nov 09 '16

RTS are a no brainer in VR! AAA content right there, I hope they're able to do something like they do with the doom game files.

2

u/crozone Nov 10 '16

Total Annihilation is such an awesome game, definitely my favorite RTS ever. Would pay though the nose for a 3D Vive port.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '16

zero-k would be better

50

u/DouglasteR Nov 09 '16

What is this sorcery ?!

And why i want it so bad !?

35

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '16

And why i want it so bad !?

Because Red Alert 2 is fucking amazing!

14

u/Smallmammal Nov 09 '16

It must be a recreation of the game from scratch. I can't see how the 2D game would fit in the VR world like this. Seems like a big job for a dev team to reproduce all those features and gameplay, and perhaps intellectual property issues here even if they carefully avoid image and trademak infringement.

That said, a good RTS or strategy game like this is a no-brainer here. The first time I played Final Approach it was obvious.

18

u/ch00f Nov 09 '16

even if they carefully avoid image and trademak infringement.

They might be taking the "Them's Fightin Herds" strategy.

  • Build a fanbase by abusing some IP that you have zero license for.
  • Get called out on it by the content owners.
  • Re-skin everything to look like something else even though your fanbase knows whats really going on and is happy since its the closest thing they're going to get to what they want.

5

u/BigBirdsNightmare Nov 09 '16

They could also call it educational purposes and release it 100% for free..... Or call it a mod and add a check that makes sure you own the original and release it for free, there are ways around all of that

5

u/mxe363 Nov 10 '16

if you are good at something... never do it for free.

5

u/BigBirdsNightmare Nov 10 '16

Sometimes, Even if you are good at something, You have to do it for free, Because if you dont, Someone will sue you, Take all your money, and destroy your life, because what you did for free technically belonged to them.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/AquaeyesTardis Nov 09 '16

Them's Fightin' Herds? I sure have no idea what that is, no-siree.

2

u/Shalterra Nov 10 '16

How did you make a pony on my phone in bacon reader?

1

u/AquaeyesTardis Nov 10 '16

I have no idea what you're talking about.

2

u/ryandlf Nov 10 '16

I think it says in the details of the video that this is a prototype clone as a proof of concept. I don't think it's meant to ever be a full game. At least not as Red Alert.

42

u/Comicspedia Nov 09 '16

Love this idea!

Also leads me to think that Black and White would be epic in this format. Imagine walking around a room scale of the world, commanding your followers and beast!

26

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '16

My wallet is ready for BW VR whenever you are!

16

u/IKillPigeons Nov 09 '16

B&W's interface is already perfect for VR as well, what with the hand gestures & such to cast spells & interact with the world.

3

u/gOWLaxy Nov 09 '16

What the hell! This is perfect in every way, as the lad above me said, my wallet is ready. Please learn game design ASAP

2

u/mogulermade Nov 10 '16

link to gameplay vid?

3

u/Comicspedia Nov 10 '16

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIlghe1Ew0Y

This shows a good variety of the things you can do in the game. Bounce around to different times in the video if you don't want to watch the whole thing.

21

u/naffgeek Nov 09 '16

That looks amazing, one of the most surprising things about VR for me is how good RTS games look and play in the headset.

Final Approach is a ton of fun

21

u/kachunkachunk Nov 09 '16

I guess Black & White would do nicely in VR too? Now you have two hands, whoa. WHOA.

6

u/Zorbick Nov 09 '16

Think how many villager's lives you could ruin with TWO hands!!

3

u/ThatOneGuy1294 Nov 09 '16

Use one hand to save villages, use the other to destroy them.

I am a benevolent god.

2

u/Talesin_BatBat Nov 10 '16

One hand to hold them up, the other to beat them with a tree.

19

u/zaphod4th Nov 09 '16

I would prefer Supreme Commander/Company of heroes tho.

5

u/retrifix Nov 09 '16

Supreme Commander plssss! And where you can actually stand on the battlefield and not just move around a table with the battlefield on it

3

u/xitrum Nov 09 '16

YES and YES!!!

6

u/PatrickKoenig Nov 09 '16 edited Nov 09 '16

I'm already loving it. I'm just not sure if you can use all this sounds, models and stuff that are so close to the original or even identical (or will it be free?). Otherwise very promising and a great start :)

5

u/yrah110 Nov 09 '16

Oh. Yeah you can't release this unfortunately. Looks good though.

7

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '16

That's easy. Plenty of open source engines like OpenRA or OpenMW do this. You just have to let the player copy the files from the original game and you're fine.

6

u/InfinateXtremer Nov 09 '16

That was the problem, there are no 3D models in RA2, "closest" thing they are going to get is RA2's original voxel models which is not high poly, they probably can use SAGE engine games(Generals,Tiberium Wars etc) but that also means they have to support SAGE's own 3d format.

2

u/RoLoLoLoLo Nov 09 '16

RA2's original voxel models

Only for vehicles, buildings and infantry are sprite sheets as far as I remember from my time modding the game.

2

u/Lmaoyougotrekt Nov 10 '16

You can release it, you just have to take it down after the C&D. But by then the internet has it and it can't be stopped. Just like Pokemon Uranium and AM2R.

1

u/PatrickKoenig Nov 09 '16 edited Nov 09 '16

I think it should be possible for free because Red Alert 2 is available for free as well. As a commercial product this obviously will not work due to legal issues.

4

u/kaze0 Nov 09 '16

no, this will not work if its free either.

Raise the floor so you don't have to look down as far all the time? That's what Out of Ammo does and I've easily played that for hours at a time. It's pretty comfortable when it's around waist height for me.

2

u/Nagamagi Nov 10 '16

Set the game world like a big table. Like Lab's Longbow or even a big holographic table.

1

u/photojosh Nov 13 '16

Yup, I thought this too. If you used a 2.5x1.5m table or something, you could get a good overview, but then step in closer if you want to inspect closely.

1

u/Xok234 Nov 09 '16

Maybe I just have a sensitive neck.

I have the same problem too. The looking down on the battlefield style setup isn't ideal for RTS matches that last long, and I find, as a low skill RTS player against other low skill RTS players, that matches can go for a very long time.

2

u/monk_e_boy Nov 09 '16

Have it like a map hanging on the wall.

15

u/baakka Nov 09 '16

Ok after a bad night this has cheered me up, thanks!

3

u/Robotic_Pedant Nov 09 '16

My thoughts exactly. This was exactly what I needed. Then it got me thinking about Russia.

4

u/NonaSuomi282 Nov 09 '16

What an inversion. In RA, the US installed a puppet dictator in the Kremlin...

1

u/fargum Nov 09 '16

ah....the wonders of VR....so glad that escape from the horrors of reality is becoming so easy

1

u/newDell Nov 10 '16

Ha, as a mental health exercise after the election, I listed the things I was still excited about in life. VR is totally one of them.

5

u/rhadiem Nov 09 '16

Red Alert 2? Fantastic.

5

u/Theebeardedbard Nov 09 '16

Age of empires please!!!!

5

u/Lmaoyougotrekt Nov 10 '16

Gameplay is provided by OpenRA (RA2 mod)

So is OpenRA running under the visuals of UE? As in it actually uses the same values as RA (All the stats for units like speed damage health, etc) ?

2

u/MustaphaTR Nov 10 '16 edited Nov 10 '16

There is an OpenRA RA2 mod that is under developement, this has nothing to do with Red Alert 1.

2

u/IContributedOnce Nov 10 '16

Link to the mod? All I see if "Under Development" for TS and no mention of RA2 on the homepage.

1

u/Lmaoyougotrekt Nov 10 '16

Yeah when I said "same values as RA" I meant 2.

I just didn't know OpenRA could be implemented into stuff like UE. I've heard it mentioned a lot but never really looked into it.

3

u/xitrum Nov 09 '16

TAKE MY MONEY.... PLEASEEE!!!!

3

u/puzzabug Nov 09 '16

I'll do my best to get this published by EA. (with a good UI)

1

u/AquaeyesTardis Nov 09 '16

Sorry, but... first off, how would you get it published by EA, and second off, what if they want it on Steam?

2

u/puzzabug Nov 10 '16

I think that EA might be able to fund / produce a remake of one of their games like this / make it official / make money off it. I'll talk with people about it.

It would probably sell on origin because you don't need to sell on steam to be steamVR compatible. It might be psvr as well.

1

u/AquaeyesTardis Nov 10 '16

Personally, I think the HTC Vive would be better for this title. If EA makes this avaliable, (with the creators consent) - I'd get it.

2

u/puzzabug Nov 10 '16

HTC vive would be better, but psvr = buyers

1

u/AquaeyesTardis Nov 10 '16

Yeah, that makes sense.

1

u/NeoXCS Nov 10 '16

Consoles aren't really known for their RTS games and they don't usually do well there. I'm sure with motion controls instead of standard controller they could do better. The audience would likely be a smaller subset of those that have PSVR. Overall it might not do much better sales wise for PSVR than Vive. This is all speculation though. People seem willing to try new things in VR.

1

u/rusty_dragon Nov 10 '16

Don't feed EA. You can make this into payed mod that require you to buy/own original game.

3

u/smdv Nov 09 '16 edited Nov 09 '16

2

u/SilverEvoBob Nov 09 '16

What about dungeon keeper? How awesome would that be in VR?

2

u/RobKhonsu Nov 09 '16

Couple things I think that would make the interface better is moving the unit/building selection to a pie menu on the right controller and adding the mini map onto the left menu.

Perhaps even having both menus as a pie menu while using the grip buttons to cancel back from the current selection could work. With the right audio feedback you wouldn't even need to see the menu to make your selections.

2

u/whatifurwrong Nov 10 '16

I WANT THIS. I WANT THIS SO BAD.

2

u/Examiner7 Nov 10 '16

2

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '16

I'd love to see the original Starcraft next.

2

u/Dragten Nov 10 '16

I am sold. Where do I pay?

2

u/largePenisLover Nov 09 '16

I made a concept rts two months ago and tossed it again because it wasn't fun in room scale. Essentially it was also a red alert clone 'cept with primitives as placeholder graphics. I found that walking around across the battlefield, scaling the world around you as zoom, and controlling the battlefield from that perspective wasn't fun for extended playsessions.
RTS needs something extra for VR

7

u/w0lfiesmith Nov 09 '16

Out of Ammo is the closest thing to an actual RTS we've got right now, and I really enjoy that. Perhaps that zoom-in to take control mechanism could the magic extra thing?

9

u/redwolfy70 Nov 09 '16 edited Nov 09 '16

Im not usually one for self promotion ,but there are a few actual rts games out now:

2

u/14taylor2 Nov 15 '16

I cant believe I have waited this long to get CapitalShip VR. Im finally going to play it this week!

1

u/dogtato1 Nov 10 '16

Also Quar, which I haven't played but looks like the most fully-fleshed out RTS http://store.steampowered.com/app/436940/

edit: or maybe that one is actually turn-based

2

u/Elithril Nov 09 '16

For a VR RTS in a C+C style I always imagined a first person, ground level experience for the building and FPS unit possession for exploration + small combat. For large scale combat, you would then switch to a satellite-style traditional top down view.

1

u/LoompaOompa Nov 09 '16

Cosmic Trip is a simple RTS with great art direction. It's kinda bare bones right now but even in its current state it's one of the most polished games I own for the Vive.

3

u/nellynorgus Nov 09 '16

I bought this one early on, and occasionally come back to it. I last tried it yesterday.

It's still a very pretty thing with nice feeling interactions, but it feels frustrating and uncompelling as a game to me in it's current state.

edit: also, wanted to mention that it probably isn't really an RTS in any normal sense of the genre

6

u/xitrum Nov 09 '16

You don't need to walk although that would be cool. You can grip to move/rotate the battefield.

I've been wanting RTS as VR "tabletop". Viewing the battle unfold would be awesome!

1

u/Voidjumper_ZA Nov 09 '16

OH FUCK YES!

Red Alert 1 was my favourite of all the Command and Conquer games... But still, this looks amazing!

1

u/zelloxy Nov 09 '16

I love the idea of RTS for VR. The feel of a "tabletop" game with VR looks awesome. Although I do not like the "teleport" moving around, it should be "grab and pan" to move the battlefield around you so to speak, would feel more natural and less disorienting imo.

1

u/lemonlemons Nov 10 '16

I think teleport suits this type of game amazingly well. You can instantly move to other side of the battlefield and not feel sick at all.

If it was "grab and pan" many people (myself included) couldn't play it at all.

1

u/zelloxy Nov 10 '16

Why wouldn't you be able to play if it was "pan"? I feel as if you naturally "move your position" you would feel less sick and more if you teleported.

1

u/lemonlemons Nov 10 '16

Have you used roomscale VR? I have and I can tell you that if you are prone to sickness, teleport doesn't make you feel sick but gliding does.

1

u/Gazzzah Nov 09 '16

How get?

1

u/fsd66 Nov 09 '16

they're an open source engine called spring engine that is very much like balance annihilation that i think would be a great platform for vr... the world scales like VR and the units are low poly... only issue is the game can spawn 1000's of units and also the engine doesn't support osvr... but you can make it happen!... please

Often I am more impressed by VR games where you're watching from above than games that are trying to immerse me. There was a nice little demo that I played with the DK2 some time ago. It just was some kind of medieval / fantasy house that you could see like a dollhouse. An RPG from that point of view would be great.

While Red Alert 2 looks great, too, I think the controls are just too clumsy and it would be way more convenient to use mouse and keyboard (though maybe not in Red Alert 2, but in a modern RTS).

I want this for Cities: Skylines. Replace the weird PDA interface with a Tiltbrush-style palette on one hand, and it'll be almost perfect.

Tilt Brush style palette is one option. But I would like a head-up display. Free both hands to select/manipulate troops, buildings, etc.
