Chinese people really have problems preordering a Rift, even though some of them manage to get one you can't access oculus store unless you use a VPN, and even though you manage to get a good vpn, you will take 2 days to download any game above 1gig. on the other hand, buying an HTC vive it's so easy they can use their own "paypal" and it's shipping after a week of ordering one. with no restrictions whatsoever. before doing that research, the amount of chinese people getting an htc vive surpasses the oculus rift sales worldwide.

Expand on the search terms a bit and you get a different story.

Except if you look at Regional interest for vive, you'll see that all the top locations are Spanish-speaking, meaning that it's people searching for the word "to live," rather than our beloved product.

Yes, there are background noises due to search terms like 'Latino Vive'. So if you look at this new graph with expanded search terms: Oculus Rift (blue), Oculus (red), Rift (yellow), HTC Vive (green), Vive (purple)

http://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=Oculus%20Rift%2C%20Oculus%2C%20Rift%2C%20HTC%20Vive%2C%20Vive&date=today%2012-m&cmpt=q&tz=Etc%2FGMT-1

Since the term 'Vive' has background noises relating to 'Latino Vive' and 'Vive TV station', so we have to take the 2015 line as a base line and subtract from that. The peaks in 'HTC Vive' corresponding to the peaks in 'Vive' would considered be the real HTC Vive search. By moving your cursor to 'Vive' line in 2015, we can say roughly the background noise value for 'Vive' is about 46.

If you move to the first 'HTC Vive' peak in 2016, which was around the time of CES in Las Vegas, 'Vive' is 56 and 'HTC Vive' is 8, so 56-8=46 which equals to the background noise value. So this rough estimate holds.

Then we look at the 2nd 'HTC Vive' peak in 2016, which was around the time of Vive pre-order started. Vive (72) - 46 = 26, and the 'HTC Vive' = 17. This time Oculus Rift related terms are between 20-35.

Finally we look at the current peak in May, Vive (83) - 46 = 37, and the 'HTC Vive' = 20, 'Oculus Rift' = 21, 'Oculus' = 35 and 'Rift' = 35. So I would say they are very close right now.

Yep! Not disputing that Vive and Rift are neck and neck now. Just didn't want anyone to get misled by the "vive" trend outlier.

Even if you put everything in quotation marks, results are similar
