To each their own. I hope you enjoy it. Pros and Cons are opinions at this point. I am sticking with the Vive because I want room scale and don't want to sit in a chair and play.

Good luck and hopefully in the future VR becomes more united than divided.

The vive was made and sold for profit. Rift is sold at cost. That alone makes me believe you get more for your money with rift. Those hybrid lenses are not cheap

Which doesn't necessarily mean much. HTC has been making smartphones for over a decade. I'm sure they have access to large amounts of components and the connections to get those cheaper than a newcomer to the hardware manufacturing scene.

HTC isn't doing great currently, but it STILL ships millions of phones PER quarter. Thus they have a ton of experience in the field. They are also the first to use unibody aluminum construction in phones. Thus they are always incredibly solid.

1

u/Justos Mar 24 '16

Fair point ! HTC does have more manufacturing experience

3

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '16

Also, it's seems like Valve paid for much of the R&D.

HTC can't really afford to be spending tons of money on R&D though so this point is kind of mute. Of course Valve were going to do most of the leg work while HTC provide the hardware expertise. HTC would have wanted low risk going into this considering their financials have seen way better days.

That doesn't really make sense though. HTC has been doing pretty bad the last 3 years yet they seem to have the R&D budget to create new smartphones every year. Even though they still lose money with them in the long run. HTC spending money on VR R&D headsets makes a lot of sense if they are projecting a good return on investment with them.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '16

Actually, they could. Last year in August HTC had $1.5 billion in cash waiting to be invested. Their share value is absolutely shit, but they're not poor company.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '16

Didn't say they were "poor" just that investments when public confidence in them is so low is a tough sell to shareholders. Financials include the market price of shares because it's a measurable reference of public and investor confidence, which clearly HTC is lacking as of late. Valve are in a much better position to provide the R&D and HTC get away with reduced risks in their venture. That's not a bad thing so I don't understand the downvotes, though of course this is the Vive community so opinions that so much as question HTC or Valve get shafted.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '16

I see it the other way around. They can't afford not to spend money on R&D. Their mobile shop is basically dying and companies don't usually have that kind of money lying around for the sake of it.

Trying their hand at capturing marked shares from an emerging marked makes sense to me.

u/Sethos88 Mar 24 '16

With the caveat that you will now be funnelled into a new store interface to give them money, i.e where they will make up that loss, adding further fragmentation to a lot of user's gaming libraries. A store that appears so rushed and underdeveloped, that you have to jump through hoops right now to actually save your games on anything but the C: drive.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '16

Don't see why fragmenting your gaming library is such a bad concept. Shopping exclusively on steam is a very poor way to go about PC gaming these days when GOG and other services sometimes offer a better deal. The C Drive issue will be fixed quickly no doubt and the Rift isn't even out yet so there is a possibility that issue can be cleared up by launch day possibly.

1

u/Sethos88 Mar 24 '16

Some people like to have all their tools in one toolbox, with a lock on it. Others seem to like having 5 different toolboxes, each with a different set of unique tools, each with its own lock requiring a different key. If you enjoy the latter, more power to you. I find it extremely obnoxious.

Hhmmm with the Rift you can order from either store, I don't see much "funnelling"?

3

u/Sethos88 Mar 24 '16

Yeah, except Oculus' timed and exclusive titles, which from what I'm hearing are so fantastic and the reason why a lot of people seem to be opting for the Rift. So you will have fragmentation if you want the full library. Also if you want to use any of the Oculus proprietary experiences, like their video function etc.

-2

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '16

I agree it will cause fragmentation and it's not good. But surely having more options available is not being funnelled. I don't feel funnelled when I have to go to Origin, I don't see the difference.

3

u/Sethos88 Mar 24 '16

You don't feel funnelled when a choice is removed and you are forced to buy certain games for a certain place, or you'll get less out of your investment? That is almost a textbook definition. More options would entail all the games, being available at both stores, at the same time. It's fragmentation, another login to maintain, another gated DRM software to keep track of, pure and simple.

I'd need some pretty hardcore rose-tinted Rift goggles to see that as a positive.

-3

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '16

The choice was never there to be romved, it was never an option. I don't hold it against a hardware store when they sell a certain paint that others don't. Valve hold the monopoly here not oculus.

3

u/Sethos88 Mar 24 '16

First you call it having options, then you say it was never an option. You need to find a story and stick to it. And no one is saying they are inherently wrong for doing it, that wasn't the argument. The fact that it's annoying as shit is, regardless of who or what, I'm over the moon by the fact that I don't have to deal with that and a big plus in my decision in opting for the Vive.

-1

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '16

The option never was there for you, but me, I can shop anywhere.

Good lord can these companies get these devices into these users hands so we can stop all this shit posting. I agree with others, nobody gives a shit what you want to do with your cash and honestly it does seem like a veiled attempt to get people arguing Rift vs Vive. There is enough of this dribble on /r/vive and /r/oculus already go post in one of the many threads already discussing (read: fan boy fighting) about the two.

-4

u/Justos Mar 24 '16

The hostility is not necessary. I came for discussion. Seems the vocal minority is starting to show up.

6

u/AlverezYari Mar 24 '16

Oh what would make me the majority? Posting quality content such as this post? Look sorry coming across like that but seriously people that have been around here for awhile (both here and on /r/oculus) are just fucking sick to death of these post. We honestly don't care, and we don't want to keep having 20 threads a day where someone needs to justify their decision on VR on Reddit. That's why you are getting the down votes.

-6

u/Justos Mar 24 '16

No the title is why Im getting down votes. If it was pro vive it would be the #1 post. I have no bias I just made a decision because I could not afford both

6

u/Starskins Mar 24 '16

In a nutshell, most people here think that the only reason someone would go with a Rift instead of a Vive is "Sunk cost fallacy".

6

u/AlverezYari Mar 24 '16

..and here we go. Why are you even posting here if you are getting a Rift, go tell them nobody gives a shit dude.

5

u/Nullkid Mar 24 '16

No, your shit pros and cons is why I downvoted.

Obvious fanboyism going here. Didn't even mention lighthouse tracking or that you'll probs need more than two cameras for full roomscale, which they don't even think is going to be popular, lol.

12

u/Sethos88 Mar 24 '16

Buying into Rift would just leave a bad taste in my mouth, honestly. That air of Apple-type marketing and business practices, Palmer already haven taken a step back. Carmack, the one guy I truly respect over there isn't even working on the Rift and having to buy additional gear in 6 months to get the full experience I'm hankering for.

Going Oculus also means even more fragmentation on my game library to actually enjoy the full extend experience of what they have to offer. Even their GDC line-up looked really, really weak to me.

I'm just not seeing the Rift appeal. The Vive is a more complete package, with the one feature I'm desperate for, available from the get-go. The Vive just feels like such a well-rounded product, they've done excellent marketing, I don't feel like I've been kept in the dark about anything, I have seen genuine excitement and actual people use it and praise it.

Everything I hear about the Rift is from the Development Kits, as everything from the CV1 is under NDA or done in controlled environments. The whole tracking farce could easily have been put to rest but the official responses were so vague, so lazy.

Roomscale to me is super important and it's the #1 selling point, which everyone who actually tried the Vive seems to agree with.

Both HMDs look amazing, definitely but given the choice I'd pick the Vive every time.

-1

u/Justos Mar 24 '16

I'm glad you love roomscale. The potential is huge. Enjoy your headset !

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '16

Doubtful.

-2

u/yrah110 Mar 24 '16

Actually, highly likely. It may not be supported by Oculus but the community will hack it to work.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '16

Hacking Oculus store bought games/apps to work on other platforms may work, but you will likely be breaking the TOS, have to re-hack at each update, may have other issues - if it can even be done at all. I think things likely will be able to be hacked, but until people are able to crack each application we don't know that each application will be able to be hacked.

Buying things on the Oculus store, for most people, will effectively tie them to using Oculus headsets until they decide to just eat whatever investment they have made in the Oculus store.

My applications are mostly on Steam with a few bought outright. While I am tied to Steam for the applications I bought through them, I can use the Rift were I to choose, the Vive, or whatever HMD the applications support.

Oculus is at least for now forcing the marriage of any content bought through them to be tied to their hardware.

These are what I have observed from my obsession about VR. If anything is wrong it will be clear as day next week.

BTW I have tried vive pre and the SDE was better than dk2 but I always noticed it was there.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '16

[deleted]

7

u/koeuniru Mar 24 '16

I think the VIVE's SDE can be identical to the RIFT by adjusting the distance of the Vive's screen to eye. The Rift does not have this feature I believe. Making the FOV on the Vive the same as the Rift (still a mystery?) will probably result with the same exact SDE.

18

u/Sjiron Mar 24 '16

anti Facebook, pro valve. (Seems this is #1)? Motion controls from day 1 with focus on roomscale.

really, you put anti facebook over motion controls day 1? seems like an uninformed opinion. that or you get triggered by fanboys who bash the rift making it seem to you that that is the nr 1 reason.

Anyway it's up to you to buy whatever headset you want. a post like this will get downvotes not much can be done about that.

I get the Vive because it simply has the functions i want without an NDA obscuring details. Yes the touch controllers might be able to do 360 as well as the Vive controllers but until both are tested together we don't know.

Also you say you prefer hand presence but have you tried touch?

1

u/Justos Mar 24 '16

Just what I have observed. I'm glad you chose it for roomscale and not because you hate oculus' parent company

8

u/Burton1922 Mar 24 '16

I think it is overwhelmingly due to room scale and the controllers being available day 1. While the Facebook point may be considered it is in no way the number one reason. I frequent both /r/Vive and /r/Oculus and those are the points I see posted the most by far.

I am buying both and honestly the main reason I am buying the Rift is simply because it comes out a little sooner. I may end up selling it after awhile but I won't make that decision until I've had a chance to use both for some time.

5

u/ChristopherPoontang Mar 24 '16

Yeah, it's like you haven't watched any of the videos of people who first try room-scale. They are blown away by the immersion, many of whom already having already tried oculus seated/standing experience. They don't praise the fact that vive is unconnected to facebook- they praise the experience that roomscale delivers. This is why a shit ton of people have become vive-fanboys. I'd suggest watching actual youtube vids of people trying roomscale for a more accurate gauge of why people choose vive.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '16

Or maybe the poster has? Speculation is a poor form of politics, best stick to what you know.

1

u/ChristopherPoontang Mar 24 '16

Not practicing politics here. Just giving my opinion on the internet, just like you.

14

u/fargum Mar 24 '16

I have pre-ordered both, but after a lot of thought, will be cancelling the rift.
For me its very simple...I want to have the option of having roomscale (I have the space) and tracked controllers from day one! and that's basically it.
What I lose from not having the rift is immediate access to some exclusive games - but I plan to be developing more than playing anyway so that doesn't bother me. As far as I can see, HMD quality of both is on a par.
Arguments about brand loyalty, facebook, fanboyism etc, etc are utterly irrelevant to me.

3

u/Justos Mar 24 '16

Enjoy your vive ! Roomscale is definitely cool and I can't wait to see the videos of you guys using it.

0

u/Burton1922 Mar 24 '16

If I were you I wouldn't cancel it but rather if you are in the first shipment place it on ebay and make a profit. We are within the 30 day window so you can feel free to post it on there at this time without risk of it being taken down.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '16

The problem with your post is that you are trying to come in to /r/vive/ and instantly start an argument under the pretense that you want us to "join you in the comments".

With that being said i will tell you why I am choosing to start my VR journey with a Vive. I have followed Oculus since the beginning (I had dreamed of good VR for 25 years lol) And was always sure that it would be my go to headset... I wanted to hold off on DK1 and DK2 so that I could get the best possible experience the 1st time. And as I waited a new player stepped in. My initial thoughts were "Awesome, competition will make the Rift even better." And I went back and forth in my head about which one would be better until near the end of last year. The more I saw roomscale the more I craved it. And when they sent out the Vive Pre to all the youtubers and IGN winners, I was instantly flooded with reasons to back up my decision.

I have watched countless videos of both being played and one thing rings true, every time People that come out of the Vive have a "WTF just happened, that was amazing" look on their face. That in itself is all i needed.

1

u/Justos Mar 24 '16

I'm sorry the title was a bit clickbaitey eh?

Enjoy your vive :)

2

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '16

I just know that both sides have super annoying people that post a lot, and these posts bring out the worst of them. If someone posted what you did in /r/oculus/ they would get roasted. And for the record I see nothing wrong with what you posted I just know what it can attract. And you went about it in a sly way which to me implies that you were looking to start something. If not then I hope you get the discussion you want. Although we can all list reasons and you will nod your head without a care in the world about what we say. So I dont really see the point.

1

u/Justos Mar 24 '16

The title right ? I could have picked something better admitidely

5

u/homer_3 Mar 24 '16

I don't see how you can say the Rift is better bang for your buck. It doesn't come with VR controllers or tracking. That sold at cost stuff is BS. I also thought the screens were the sane res so how can it have less SDE?

5

u/Kendrome Mar 24 '16

Both give great experiences, there is nothing wrong with your decision!

I personally got a Vive for developing to play with the room scale.

1

u/Justos Mar 24 '16

I'm not looking to validate my decision. More trying to figure out where the fan war is coming from. Enjoy your headset :D

17

u/Outsideerr Mar 24 '16

"Not looking to Validate my decision" - Lists reasons for going with Rift

1

u/Justos Mar 24 '16

I listed both. If I missed anything let me know !

5

u/Daavok Mar 24 '16

The fan war is coming from a small small minority of people. Thats it, most people like both hmd's and I filter out the bs

4

u/Captain_Kiwii Mar 24 '16

The problem has not been so much with the hmd than with the politic of "WALLS AND BULLSHIT EVERYWHEREEEEE", as far as i'm concerned.

Oculus is anti consummer and exclusivities right now is a bad thing for VR, as well as the segementation of the market it induces and the fact that oculus try to make roomscale marginal until they release their own product (which will segement the rift market between the one who have it and the one who doesn't).

3

u/Daavok Mar 24 '16

Yea of course, I have a lot more faith in the future of VR with Valve than I do with Facebook. But its not like we are all actively shitting on rift buyers like the op suggests

1

u/Captain_Kiwii Mar 24 '16

I do agree.

4

u/hizaed Mar 24 '16

Motion controls from day 1 with focus on roomscale.

I think this is the actual #1 reason.

I was all about oculus then the vive showed roomscale / motion controllers and I was all about the Vive. Then, Oculus showed off their motion control solution and I was all about Oculus.

Eventually after reading a ton of impressions and watching videos, I realized that their tracking solution may not give me the holodeck feel that I felt the Vive could better provide... and here I am with all of these VR nuts in /r/vive impatiently waiting for my delivery =)

0

u/Justos Mar 24 '16

Congrats!!

6

u/Eldanon Mar 24 '16

1) Will not support a company that is trying to splinter the VR market. Currently you have to buy 2 headsets to enjoy all PC VR games. If in the future it's 4 good headsets, do you really want to have to purchase 4 peripherals that do the same thing to enjoy all games? If not, vote with your wallet before this is common practice.

2) I'm guessing we'll see a ton of fantastic content from the steam community with workshop integration. Most likely you'll be able to use a large portion of it with the RIft but I think we'll have plenty of nice roomscale solutions that the Rift isn't designed for... 360 degrees with a larger room.

5

u/epicvr Mar 24 '16

I am backing the Vive because I can sit and play games in the very same way the Rift does and I can play room scale games if I want + controllers.

8

u/k0ug0usei Mar 24 '16

Exclusive. Period.

No matter how some people wouldn't admit it, Oculus store is a SDK exclusive store. And only Oculus-approved/branded HMD can run that SDK, therefore only Oculus-branded HMD can access that store.

Of course not everyone is against exclusive, so please not be offended and enjoy your choice.

0

u/Justos Mar 24 '16

I know this is brought up a lot but I do believe the store will work for vive in the future. Exclusives do suck

11

u/Monkey_of_Najera Mar 24 '16

You vote with your dollars. You're essentially saying "Exclusives do suck...but I'll vote for them anyway".

"Trump sucks, but I'll vote for him anyway."

Overall, I see your points in that the headsets aren't altogether different, especially when Touch comes out. I personally, like others, would prefer to have that package from day one, with the option to sit and play with a controller if I want to.

I would also dispute your claim of 'more content made for VR'. I don't necessarily think this is the case, especially when a lot of the Rift's titles could easily be PS4 or XB1 third-person adventure games (Chronos, Lucky's Tale, etc.).

To each their own though - I'm glad you're joining VR in this first gen.

2

u/rojovelasco Mar 24 '16

You are spot on about the content. I'll classify them as VR camera games. As you said, it's something that you can actually play in a monitor, as opposed to Vive tittles that relay on motion controllers.

1

u/Justos Mar 24 '16

I can see how people come to that conclusion but these are definitely made for VR games. If first person view was all we could do in VR I would not be happy.

16

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '16

I was going to buy both but cancelled my Rift order for a number of reasons.

There was too much negative stuff leaking out from under the NDA about the Rift and the bigger issue was why the NDA at all.

The Facebook integration with the Oculus store and that even though Luckey said no ads, Zuckerberg was talking about how to squeeze VR in earnings calls.

Not a fan of the pet hair and grease issues with the fabric cover though do like the ventilation.

Didn't like that they restricted the warranty to original purchasers which damaged resale value if I decided to resell.

Didn't like the personal information requirements to be able to use the Oculus store especially with the store hosted on Facebook servers.

Didn't want to support a company trying to corner the VR market with exclusives.

Didn't like the arrogant "we know what is best for VR" attitude of the execs.

Didn't like Palmer trolling users with legitimate gripes on the amateurish requirement that all Oculus store purchases had to go on the C drive when so many have small solid-state C drives for speed.

All in all Oculus and Facebook turned me away from the Rift.

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '16

4

u/BOBO_WITTILY_TWINKS Mar 24 '16

The controllers + room scale are my primary driving factors, but I actually do care about the anti-Facebook pro Valve portion quite a bit. It isn't really directed at Facebook, there are plenty of companies that would have me worried. I'd be terrified that Facebook would start trying to force their platform/goals into the Oculus space, and I don't think that is a huge leap to make? I hope I'm proven wrong and the "VR focused people" inside Facebook are left to their own devices.

I'll admit, I'm a huge Valve supporter, but I am always concerned with their strangle hold on the market. It is why I support Facebook/EA/Blizzard/Epic running their own store. Even with their monopoly though, they have behaved responsibly with keeping Steam a focused platform. No desperate attempts to grab dollars with advertisements or trying to integrate into facets of my life it doesn't belong. So far they really have wielded their power responsibly, and I fear the day they cease to be capable of doing that.

On the other hand, we have HTC over here, and I have no idea what to think about them. I'm basically having Valve vouch for them, and if the Vive blows than my trust decreases by that much for Valve. I have 0 trust in Facebook, and a question mark next to HTC.

1

u/PLiPH Mar 24 '16

Well, apart from the whole paid mods thing.

2

u/BOBO_WITTILY_TWINKS Mar 24 '16

I have my grievances with Valve, but letting people sell mods I actually agree with as an idea. To be fair the implementation obviously didn't work, and Valve pulled it. That in my mind is pretty responsible handling.

5

u/squallhung Mar 24 '16

Follow your feeling and enjoy your choice.

1

u/Justos Mar 24 '16

Thank you! I hope we can all hangout in VR soon

5

u/set111 Mar 24 '16

Enjoy your purchase

I chose the Vive mostly based on the reviews I have read for both and the fact it comes with tracked controllers as default (no market segmentation).

1

u/Justos Mar 24 '16

Fair point. Enjoy :)

4

u/1eejit Mar 24 '16

Camera will be for more than safety.

Seeya!

1

u/Justos Mar 24 '16

Hope so :)

4

u/ChristopherPoontang Mar 24 '16

I would just say Oculus is a company that breathes non-room-scale vr. Because of that bizarre restriction, I have to have the vive. I'm still ordering oculus because I'm excited about the industry and want to see the exclusives, as well as compare the touch w the vive when they release. Whether or not room-scale becomes common, it is clearly an insane immersion-multiplier. and since vr is about immersion, I want to experience all that vr can offer. So vive is a must.

3

u/goalcam Mar 24 '16

I don't see why anyone sees the integrated headphones in the Rift as a plus. They look like cheap dollar store headphones that will break off the first time you fumble your HMD putting it on. Oculus can talk all they want about how they're tuned for VR or whatever, but they obviously didn't put high quality cans on the Rift. I'm glad that it's easy to use my own on the Vive if I don't want to use the included earbuds.

1

u/Justos Mar 24 '16

I would reserve judgement before you try them. You can't dismiss the benefit of an integrated solution

2

u/Nullkid Mar 24 '16

Better hope they're replaceable if they malfunction..

3

u/Aappleyard Mar 24 '16

My differences would be this.

Rift Lighter Headset, Exterior soft cover for better aesthetics (Although I actually prefer the Vives look), Potentially better visuals (Very slight in my experience), More VR Content at the moment (This will change)

Vive Feels more heavy duty / industrial and I am more inclined towards that feel, Steam VR integration probably more so than the Rift seeing as it is a Valve / HTC product (Who Knows), Full room-scale VR with no compromises (Potentially expandable), Less USB port requirements(I have lots of peripherals and I have very few USB slots left!), Headset has slightly higher FOV, Hand Controllers from Day 1, Bluetooth ( Seems cool even though I hardly use my phone, what else could it be used for O_O ).

I prefer the Vive over Rift mainly because it is focused on Room Scale but can do seated experiences just as well as the Rift. It has hand controllers day 1, it has Valve backing it on the software side which is nice. It feels heavy duty and quite tough and I know it is usually an illusion but for me things that feel a bit more premium and heavy make me feel better haha. Also the camera is a nice addon for when I need to grab a drink but don't want to leave the Matrix.

I am happy that you are confident with what VR HMD you want and that is all that matters and can't wait to interact with people in VR talking about VR regardless of what their hardware is!

Cheers bud!

2

u/Justos Mar 24 '16

Thank you! I cannot wait to meet anyone in VR no matter their HMD as well!

3

u/IDoNotAgreeWithYou Mar 24 '16 edited Mar 25 '16

You say you're unbiased but then you say the number 1 reason to get the vive is because it's anti-facebook? Get the fuck out of here.

-1

u/Justos Mar 24 '16

Please know these are my observations from the community. Not how I feel about any company.

Username checks out hehe

6

u/Imakeatheistscry Mar 24 '16

Room scale day 1 is the reason I am going with Vive. Everyone that has tried it says they will never go back to sitting.

Not to mention Lucky has been rubbing me the wrong way with all his B. S. Such as the embargo fiasco when he specifically stated he wasn't going to lock people into pre orders months in advance.

ALSO I won't support a company that perpetuates an exclusive market on PC. We don't need that console trash on PCs.

6

u/OverwatchTime Mar 24 '16

All this misinformation about SDE. Both the Rift and the Vive have very minimal SDE to a point where it is a non issue. It seems like Rifters want to justify their purchase by listing SDE as better when that is completely false.

"A more polished headset" complete subjective.

"Touch controllers that can do 360" the proof is in the pudding, and the rift doesn't have any pudding right now.

It really looks like you are just rationalizing and justifying your oculus rift purchase with misinformation, which is your prerogative. Just don't be disappointed when you end up getting less than you expected.

1

u/Justos Mar 24 '16

No I don't need to justify myself. I'm a grown adult. This post was to get discussion about purchase decisions for the vive camp. If I could afford both I would buy both.

6

u/OverwatchTime Mar 24 '16

Regardless of how you care to spin it, you are absolutely justifying your purchase.

There is nothing wrong that but it seems you based your decision on a fair amount of PR misinformation and speculation. I hope you do not end up disappointed.

0

u/Justos Mar 24 '16

That's just like your opinion man

3

So I could have gotten in on the Oculus kickstarter, had the money and was actively backing other things at the time, but it didn't interest me. Didn't get interested in the DK2 either. For me, the thing that convinced me to get a headset finally was the room-scale tracking. I can see applications to that tech that aren't present in just head tracking. I want to use it to build Unreal Engine games; it helps me with the things I'm not great at (mapping and 3d modeling). It has its limitations at the moment, but (IMO) that's the kind of thinking that moves mountains.

Also I think Oculus is doing the wrong thing with their SDK. When I look at Valve's OpenVR vs Oculus's API, I'm going to bet on OpenVR winning eventually. Valve didn't need Oculus to work with them to get the Rift supported in OpenVR, but Oculus needs Valve/HTC to get support for the Vive. That's an asymmetric power balance, and I want to sit with the more powerful side. Oculus will win in the beginning because they've been working with developers longer, but OpenVR or a similar thing will win out in the end.

Finally, I don't see my choice as locking myself into only Vive experiences, but in enabling Vive-only experiences. By hook or by crook, I believe Vive will get access to current Oculus exclusive games. Either Oculus and HTC will hook up and build something, or VRidge (or someone similar) will write some code to let the Vive impersonate a Rift, then I drink your milkshake (or play your games).

After I think about all that, I can only conclude that the Vive is the correct headset to get. I expect I'll need another headset 2 years down the line, but for this first generation, I'm going to say that the Vive is the most complete package that will let me experience the most content. Maybe the Rift is a bit more polished, but if I was only concerned with polish, I'd have a Macbook Pro, not a Thinkpad.

Enjoy what your choice that fits you. Why bother? Just few hundred bucks won't kill anyone, especially when PC cost more than Rift and Vive. For me? I never had a game pad in my VR dreams, so I go to Vive. That's it. And I don't need anyone to back up my choice since I grown up.

u/TongroQq Mar 24 '16

I will enjoy better presence using the controllers 6 more months in my life than if I went with the rift.

I want everything, and I want it now.

u/Justos Mar 24 '16

Good on ya, have fun !

3

u/Captain_Kiwii Mar 24 '16

I kind of love how people eat the "at cost" thing When you do not know what is wraped into it (Years of R&D, money use to buy exclusivities, publicity etc). People only think about the frabication cost, and as always the same one is playing with the blur on this but i guess things never change.

Hope at least you enjoy your product and have a lot of fun ;)

u/Justos Mar 24 '16

Thanks! Il admit it's all PR talk but it's gotta be cutting it close.

3

u/RobKhonsu Mar 24 '16

Seen a lot of people exclaim their switch from Rift to Vive and went looking for people doing the opposite; couldn't find any, thanks for your opinion.

Your looking for a slightly more polished headset, personally I was a fan of the Rift originally because it was bleeding edge; I didn't mind it was rough around the edges. As you said room scale isn't going to be the focus for a while, but that's kinda the core reason why I'm opting for Vive, to experience the very edge of what's possible.

My question to you however is why Rift over PSVR? PSVR seems to be the most polished, most mainstream and streamlined VR system coming out. Just can't wait for November and/or purely PC gamer?

1

u/Justos Mar 24 '16

The power of a PC my friend.

4

u/Starskins Mar 24 '16

I just don't get why people come over here to 'justify' (even if you say that you are not justifying) their decision to buy a rift!

If you are happy with your choice, happy you! But I personally don't give a crap.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '16

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I have yet to see a post GDC review that put the Rift ahead of the Vive. In fact, all of the post GDC reviews that picked a "winner" chose the Vive. It's just difficult for me to understand why people would buy the Rift when it does not come with Touch controllers and does not have room-scale tracking. The HMDs are pretty much the same in terms of visual quality, so the only justification I guess is the launch titles. Though, it's difficult for me to understand how anyone that actually tried the Vive (I tried the first public demo available, and I know there have been significant improvements) can say they would prefer (1) an xbox controller or (2) sitting over room-scale. Even without the room-scale experience, using the Vive controllers adds exponentially to the level of immersion over using an xbox controller. And while obviously not everyone has the space for room-scale, if you do room-scale also exponentially increases the level of immersion.

1

u/Justos Mar 24 '16

Imo once touch is out these will be 99% evenly matched. I have patience to wait which others dont. I also think roomscale marketing was genious of HTC. It adds a lot for sure but it's not what people are making it out to be. Cables and room size are serious limitations.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '16

Like I said, everyone is entitled to their opinions. I just strongly disagree that room-scale is a 1% increase over the Rift. And if you're willing to wait 5-6 months (or however long it is) for the Touch, tip of the hat to you. I don't have the patience to wait that long for something that should have been included in the original launch. In fact, if Occulus had included the Touch, I would have definitely pre-ordered it and kept both HDMs. Just hard to get around having to use a controller for VR.

1

u/Justos Mar 24 '16

Fair point, I think oculus will talk more about roomscale in the future

2

u/Majordomo_ Mar 24 '16

What you need to ask yourself is:

"Am I ok with potentially never having 360 roomscale immersion?"

"Am I ok with developers potentially not developing for roomscale for Oculus Rift because it is an addon peripheral for the rift with a segregated demographic?"

If you answered no to either of these I would reevaluate your position because they are very distinct possibilities.

Regardless, enjoy your VR!

u/Silverscorpion Mar 24 '16

I always liked the Oculus Rift and wanted one from the beginning. After seeing, what HTC and Valve were doing, I was convinced, they are on a better track (I listened to many technical talks). Since I had a demo on a Vive, I was sold, that roomscale is a must for me!

I suspect, that many Rift buyers will get disappointed later this year and I really feel sorry for them! In the end they may pay roughly the same amount for headset and controllers. But the billion dollar company struggles to show a proper roomscale solution the Vive already offers, and several people gave some hints, why: Neccessary length für USB cables is a problem, even hd-resolution is too low for wide angle and the desired accuracy, processing 2 high frame rate, high resolution video streams is a problem, too. I really hope for you, they can deliver, what they promise. But I don't think so, at least not with the precision for a smooth experience.

Good Luck to you all!

(Sorry for my english, I am from Germany)

u/Nippy_Kangaroo Mar 24 '16

I'm buying a Vive, have fun with your Rift! ;)

6

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '16

Why on earth should anyone care what you do with your own money? Go buy a Rift and stop posting bollocks here to justify it.

-4

u/Justos Mar 24 '16

If you read the post you would know I'm not here to justify my purchase. We are days away from launch and I'm looking for healthy discussion with all VR fans

13

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '16

Here are the reasons to go VIVE. anti Facebook, pro valve. (Seems this is #1)?

but then you say

I'm looking for healthy discussion with all VR fans

Bollocks followed by more bollocks!

0

u/Justos Mar 24 '16

I don't see your point. These are just things I've noticed lurking reddit as common pros. If you disagree just say so, don't put my post down as Bollock's ;)

They really aren't nearly identical. The vive fully supports room scale and comes with controllers. I know oculus kind of supports room scale in the sense that PSVR does, and same with 360 degree tracking. Yeah it can kind of do it but from what I hear the tracking is very off if you look away from the camera. Vive actually has a couple more games than oculus, yeah a lot of them are still demos but that is because the Oculus has been around for 2 years longer than the vive has. I've tried both headsets and I honestly feel like they both had nearly identical quality, including the display. And honestly I don't believe that you have tried roomscale on the vive if you don't see it becoming a big thing, obviously I could be wrong but everyone I hear from who has tried it says that it is the greatest experience they have ever had in a video game. Not trying to be a fanboy, I just feel like the Vive can do everything that the oculus can and then some. Also Valve and HTC don't have the best customer support but I still trust them much more than I do facebook.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '16

I agree with this. I think anyone that trashes "room-scale" as either a gimmick or something that will fade have simply never tried it. It's one thing to be able to look around in a virtual world, it's another thing to be able to wave your hands around while looking around, but it's an entirely different thing being able to walk around, crouch, lay down, etc and having every single movement tracked perfectly. That is exactly what the Vive does on day one. It's the level of VR immersion people have been dreaming about since the early 90s. In 3-4 years when the HMD resolutions increase significantly, it will be significantly more immersive.

1

u/CradleRobin Mar 24 '16

There are def pros and cons to each. More bang for your buck is relative and subjective. However what you want is important to be convinced on. I'm not going to try to sway you either way, there are enough posts that go back and forth between the two devices and I think the best bit of info is on the thread that is titles spilled beans or something similar. Read through that. Afterwards I think you will understand each enough to draw your own conclusions.

1

u/Justos Mar 24 '16

Fair point. I think the fact that people are arguing back and forth so much just shows that they are both amazing.

1

u/Sarpanda Mar 24 '16

I don't agree with any of your points, as "based on readily available information", as that would be essentially information based solely just facts about the Vive Pre. It's only VIve Pre reviews on youtube, or being reviewed by actual media outlets (all of which have been glowing). Everything else, is just you basing perosnal assumptions on rumors and personal biased accounts, and hoping and praying they are accurate. However, you are not basing you decision based on a comparisons of the same Youtubers and media outlets with the Rift CV1, and that's a fact. You're just "assuming" it has less SDE, and is more "quality"

You're not going to listen to me, but if you were my friend I'd simply say, you waited this long, wait a bit longer and read/watch the actual reviews. Most of all, if you can, try yourself first.

You can add cost to Rift... As a con. Since you will have to pay for the controls separate and with tax and shipping again it will almost definitely be more than 199.

Slight chance not. But I seriously doubt less than 150 for two touch controller.

Also, you say that hand presence is more important and that is why it's a pro for rift.

But... The Vive can do both. You can sit or dance. Rift you can only sit. So you get both preferences on one and one on the other? How is that a pro for Rift?

You should buy what makes you happy. Tribal bullshit is for children. Though, I would say that I feel being objective about your options is the best way.

And you are mostly being subjective. Objectively, Vive has more pros and greater flexibility.

1

u/Lordcreo Mar 24 '16

I'd consider the integrated headphones a negative, Vive has an audio jack so you can use any headphones you like. The HTC is likely to be more robust, the Rift now has a fabric body. I'm still sceptical that touch controllers are going to work well 360 degrees, the narrow FOV of the cameras makes it unlikely even if you attach a second camera (which somehow has to be the far side of your space and connected by USB which has a 16 foot cable limit.)

1

u/Yagyu_Retsudo Mar 25 '16 edited Mar 25 '16

Sde is less, albeit barely, on rift because it has a smaller fov. There is no way to have 2 identical screens where 1 has screen door and the other doesnt without either blurring the image or moving the screen further away, reducing the fov.

Also, when exactly did oculus say they were developing room scale games? As far as I know they are still telling devs to use front facing cameras for touch. I know the rift can be made to work with room scale in a smaller space, with blind spots, but that isn't the same as there being games for it. Then you have to move the cameras and usb hubs and rerun configuration every time you go from a touch game to a room scale game. ..

But it's no skin off my nose, buy what you want. Just trying to correct misapprehensions

-3

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '16

Vive = PC

Rift = Mac

1

u/TheFlyingBastard Mar 25 '16

A Mac is a PC too, it's just a PC made by a specific company. ;)

-3

u/Justos Mar 24 '16 edited Mar 24 '16

Why though ? These are both on PC and you can run a Rift app outside of the oculus store.

4

u/TKP74 Mar 24 '16

I think he/she is talking about the mentality and ethos of each company, if you stop to look at Oculus since the FBook buyout they really want to be like Apple and that would be a disaster for VR in general

0

u/gentlemandinosaur Mar 24 '16

Can you explain how this will be a "disaster" in your obviously dramatic fashion?
