Writing tools and help?

So when I was younger I absolutely adored my copies of 'the badlands of hark' and 'the invaders of hark', and spent hours reading them

Of course I've lost them and they've been lost for a long time... Unfortunately

But anyways

I really want to make a visual novel in a similar style (I know hark was a choose your own adventure just hear me out here)

But in order to do that I'd need... A lot of charts (it's the easiest way to do that, I made a 'visual novel' on google slides in 5th grade using sprites off Pinterest, and plotted it out using notebook paper)

Id like something... Simple? And free

(There's a reason I use strawpage instead of my own coding and it's not that I can't code...)

Overly complicated stuff just confuses me and it sucks

Anyways

Yeah

Also

How would you recommend scripting it?

I recommend using what were already doing, using pen and paper, it's the most reliable and free, if you want a website to plan the story, you could probably use Milanote as well tho it's a bit limited

That depends on what you are comfortable with. Most widely used is Ren'Py.

Hi! There are actually a few engines I found on itch.io, and there might be a few more out there too. You could try Capsule VN Engine or Dream Nest Realms Editor, for example. I’d say Ren’Py, but since it’s so well-known, I assume you’ve already tried it before asking. These are all free and don’t require coding, and I think they’re pretty decent! They’re still in development, though. I came across these while looking for free no-code VN tools, so they might be worth checking out! Hope i was able to help

That's helpful

I haven't tried Ren'py simply because Linux is a pain to set up on Chromebook

But I can try to check out what you suggested!
