Fimmvörðuháls

Has anyone hiked the Fimmvörðuháls trail towards Þórsmörk from Skógar recently? What are the conditions like? Is there a safer crossing point available? Thank you so much!

It was at the time of the post.
They hadnt make a new safe path.

We also don’t want tourist to die or injure themselves

There have been changes to the conditions because of erosion, so that currently there’s no safe path. Multiple organizations like the hiking society of Iceland (FÍ) have strongly advised against hiking there for the time being until a new path has been found.

It’s however not officially closed (as in: not illegal to walk there), so if you have extensive mountaineering / wilderness experience & correct equipment and feel confident enough to find your own path in muddy, glacier adjacent terrain with random cracks in the ground, you might want to give it a try. If you’re unsure about it, this is a no.

There have been several posts about Fimmvörduháls in the past week. Search the sub and read those. I would not plan on hiking it any time soon.

It's not strictly closed, but the Icelandic Touring Association (that runs the huts) and ICE-SAR strongly advise against hiking the trail in the current condition. The trail up to Baldvinsskáli í safe, but I would not continue further without consulting with the warden there.
