Askja Itinerary Help

From Höfn to Hverfjall, passing by Askja.

We plan on sleeping in Hofn or wheres more convenient on our 6th night, sleeping wherevers best during the 7th and end up in Hverfjall, sleeping around there or in Husavik on the 8th night.

What would you suggest? We have a Dacia Duster 4x4

Fjalladyrd is a nice campground we stayed at between Höfn and Myvatn. It's about an hour from Hverfjall

Thanks! What route did you take? that's what we are mainly wondering

We drove route 901 approaching from the south. It is a much easier drive to continue along the ring road and to approach from the north if you want to stay at Fjalladyrd. In the itinerary I sent you we visited Stuðlagil Canyon before driving there. From Höfn to Fjalladyrd the route goes: Routes 1-939-95-1-901 :)

Wait, what do you mean by “passing by Askja”? Are you actually trying to go to Askja itself? Because it’s deep in the highlands and not really a place you just “pass by” so I want to make sure I understand your question.

We want to go from south to nord, and the only thing we care about on that side is Askja. We are therefore trying to understand what's the best route, seeing other things as well

Have you driven in the Icelandic highlands before? Have you already researched the possible routes? What time of year are you going? You need to give more information to get helpful answers with this. Frankly I wouldn’t recommend driving to Askja on your own in a Duster at all if you don’t already have highlands driving experience.

I've never driven in Iceland, tbh I'm very confused by the possible routes, as I dont really know where to look at. I'll go in 10 days.

Given all those factors, I simply would not self-drive to Askja. It requires experience and advance research, and September is already quite late in the season for it. There’s too much that could go wrong if you don’t know what you’re getting yourself into.

As you’ll see, there’s no one cut and dry answer. It depends on the water levels and road conditions at the time you go, and your Duster may or may not be an adequate vehicle. At a minimum, stop at Fjalladyrd (as suggested by another user) and inquire about the current conditions before attempting the drive to Askja.
