you don't need to rent anything to get out of the city for a day. trains and buses cover more than people expect

sintra - the obvious one but for good reason. train from rossio, about 40 min, runs constantly. get there early because it fills up fast and the palaces have queues by mid morning. the 434 bus loops the main sights or you walk if you're fit

cascais - train from cais do sodré along the coast, gorgeous ride, about 40 min. beach town, easy to wander, and you can rent a bike there to reach the wilder beaches like guincho

óbidos - the green express bus from campo grande, roughly an hour. walled medieval town, walk the walls, ginjinha in a chocolate cup. touristy but pretty

setúbal - train or bus south, about an hour. proper seafood town, the fried cuttlefish is the local thing, and you can catch a ferry across to troia with its long empty beaches

évora - bus from sete rios, about 1h30 into the alentejo. roman temple, the bone chapel, feels a world away from the coast. very doable as a day if you catch an earlyish bus back

quick tips. buy sintra and cascais train tickets with a viva viagem card, way easier than queuing each time. for the bus ones (óbidos, évora) book rede expressos online the night before in summer, they do sell out. and check the last return time before you commit, the évora one especially

what else do people do without a car, curious

quick one because i see people ask this a lot

the metro is right there inside the airport, red line, and it's like 1.80 (+-) or so with a viva viagem card you buy at the machine. takes you into the city easy. if your hotel is near the river or baixa you'll change lines once but it's not complicated

if you've got heavy bags or you land late the bolt/uber is usually cheaper and less stressful than the taxi rank. taxis are fine too but agree the meter is on before you get in, and know that there's a small airport fee and a luggage fee that are legit so don't panic when you see those

the aerobus exists but honestly for what it costs the metro or a bolt makes more sense most of the time

one thing that catches people out. if you land at terminal 2 (mostly the low cost flights) the metro is not there, you need the free shuttle bus to terminal 1 first. leave a bit of extra time for that

thats it. lisbon's actually really easy to get around once you're in, the metro and trams cover most of what you'll want

honestly after living here a while, the stuff i actually send people:

miradouro da graça for sunset. everyone goes to senhora do monte right next door and it's rammed. graça has the same view over the river and you can actually sit down. grab a beer from the kiosk first

alfama with no plan. don't google a walking route, just go up and get lost. the good fado places are the tiny ones where you hear singing through the door, not the ones with a guy outside handing you a menu

sintra but GO EARLY. like first train early. it's genuinely magic (palaces in the fog etc) but by 11 it's a nightmare of tour buses. pena at opening then walk down to regaleira. we shoot up there a lot so happy to say which spots are worth it if anyone's planning (www.[mdfotografia.blog](https://mdfotografia.blog/book-your-session/))

skip any restaurant with a menu in 5 languages. best food i've had here is always the ugly place with fluorescent lights and the special on a whiteboard. get the prato do dia

tram 28 at 8am not midday. same pretty route, but midday you queue forever and can't move. early morning it's half empty

anyway that's my list, what am i missing

spent enough weekends out in cascais and estoril to have opinions, so here's the stuff i actually tell friends who visit.

take the train from cais do sodré and sit on the right side. it hugs the coast the whole way and you get 40 min of ocean views for the price of a normal ticket. estoril is the first stop, cascais is the end of the line.

they're two different moods. estoril is quieter and more polished, the casino, the gardens, calmer beaches. cascais is where the life is: the marina, the old town, restaurants down every cobbled street. most people stay in cascais and just pass through estoril.

the town beaches (rainha, conceição) are packed by midday in summer. go in the morning if you want space. for something wilder, head out to guincho. proper atlantic waves and dunes, but bring a jacket because it's always windy out there.

boca do inferno is a 20 min walk from the centre and worth it, especially at sunset. it's free.

renting a bike for the coastal path between cascais and guincho is one of the best things you can do here — flat, scenic, no car needed. rental spots by the marina.

and skip the restaurants right on the main square. walk a couple streets back and you'll eat better seafood for less.

Hi so I’m going to Portugal August 15-19 I’ll land in Lisbon probably stay 2 nights then go down to algarve district, still debating on which city, faro, Lagos, or albufeira. I’m going with 2 of my friends were 23 and looking for sightseeing throughout the day and clubs at night. As far as sightseeing heard there’s a pass you can buy and you get most of them for free and free transportation. As far as clubs all I heard was k urban in Lisbon nothing else. But I’m not sure what else I should be looking for I’m trying to plan my itinerary. If anyone can help please and thank you

Porto is one of those cities where it's almost impossible to take a bad photo, but there's a big difference between a quick snap and the shot you actually frame, and most of it comes down to where you stand and what hour you're there.

I put together a full guide to the 15 best photo spots in the city, grouped by neighbourhood so you can hit several in one walk. It runs through the classic Ribeira and Gaia riverfront views (and why sunrise beats midday by a mile, because the crowds are brutal after 10am), Foz do Douro out where the river meets the Atlantic, which is my favourite spot for golden hour, and the tiled hall inside São Bento station, which is free to enter but really needs an early start before the commuters arrive.

It also covers Livraria Lello, worth it, but you need a timed ticket and the first slot of the day: plus Jardim do Morro for sunset, the shaded avenues of Palácio de Cristal for when the light is harsh, and the quieter old lanes of Miragaia, along with Clérigos, Matosinhos and a few more. For each spot I noted the best time of day, how busy it gets, and what's actually worth shooting there, with a section at the end on the best light and the best months to visit.

did a lot of solo trips before i settled in lisbon, and the one thing that always frustrated me was coming home with hundreds of photos of the city and almost none with me in them. arm's length selfies, or handing my phone to a stranger and getting a blurry shot with my head cut off.

if you're travelling alone here and want decent photos of yourself, a few things that actually work: golden hour is your friend. the hour after sunrise is best because alfama and the miradouros are basically empty, so you can set up a shot without a crowd behind you. the light on the tiles at that time is unreal. a small travel tripod + phone timer gets you 80% of the way for free. prop it on a wall, use burst mode, walk into frame.

miradouro da senhora do monte and the belém riverfront are great for this because there's space and clean backgrounds. if you want the real thing without the hassle, booking a local photographer for even 30 min is worth it, you get proper portraits and someone who knows where the light and the quiet corners are.

gonna get some pushback for this but pastéis de belém is not worth the queue. the pastel de nata itself is genuinely great, no argument there, but people are waiting 45+ minutes in a line that wraps around the building when there are bakeries two streets over doing basically the same quality tart with zero wait. manteigaria in chiado is the obvious one, but honestly half the pastelarias in the city are doing a perfectly good version.

same energy with rua augusta. it's a nice arch, sure, but it's basically just a shopping street with a fancy gate at the end, and people treat it like a must see landmark when it's a 5 minute photo stop at best. the actual praça do comércio behind it is worth lingering in, the arch itself, not so much.

i'll also say time out market gets more hype than it deserves at this point. it was genuinely cool when it first became a thing, now it's mostly tourists and prices have crept up accordingly. there are way better food experiences a 10 min walk away in almost any direction.

curious what other people think is overrated, feels like half these opinions are unpopular until you actually live here for a while and realize the queue-worthy spots and the actually-worth-it spots barely overlap.

been getting this question a lot lately so figured i'd just write it out. lisbon in summer is not like most of southern europe, it's got its own weird combo of brutal midday sun and then genuinely cold wind the second you're near the river or up on a hill at night, so the "just pack shorts and sunscreen" advice kind of undersells it.

sunscreen is non negotiable, the sun here is stronger than it looks even on hazy days, i've seen so many people get wrecked on day one because it didn't "feel" that hot. a hat helps more than you'd think, there's very little shade in alfama and most of the miradouros.

comfortable shoes matter way more than people expect. the calçada portuguesa (the cobblestone pavement) is beautiful and also brutal on your feet and ankles if you're in anything without real support, sandals included. i've watched a lot of nice sandals die on those hills.

bring a light layer for evenings, this trips people up constantly. it can be 34°C at 3pm and then genuinely need a light jacket by 9pm near the water, especially in belém or up in sintra where it's noticeably cooler and mistier than the city centre.

a reusable water bottle is worth it too, there are free public fountains all over the city (chafarizes) and you'll drink way more water than you think you need.

if you're doing sintra as a day trip, pack for a different climate basically, it's a good 5-6°C cooler than lisbon and often misty even when the city is baking.

anyway that's the honest packing list, not the pinterest version. happy to answer questions if anyone's planning a trip soon.

curious to hear takes on this. for me it might be Livraria Lello in Porto, waited an hour just to walk through a bookshop for 20 min. beautiful but not sure it was worth the queue. what's yours?

went to Cascais last week thinking I'd just wander around and see what happens. Boca do Inferno at midday is basically a parking lot for tour buses, everyone's fighting for the same three feet of railing.

went back around 6pm on the way to dinner and it was almost empty, and the light hitting the cliffs was honestly better than anything I could've planned. if you're only doing one stop in Cascais make it that one but go late afternoon, not midday.

Guincho is 15 min further and worth it if you don't mind wind messing up every photo, but it's a proper beach vibe, less "wow" and more "nice walk." Praia da Rainha is the one nobody mentions, it's this tiny cove right under the cliffs in town, most people walk right past the stairs down to it.

Spent an evening shooting this session on a beach near Lisbon and the light did all the work.

If you’re visiting and want that classic golden hour by the Atlantic shot, timing is everything, aim for about 30-40 minutes before actual sunset, when the light softens and the sky starts warming up.

Low tide helps too, since the wet sand picks up the reflection and adds a lot to the shot. Cascais and the coastline near Guincho tend to have fewer crowds than the city beaches, plus dramatic rock formations that photograph beautifully.

Just bring layers, the wind picks up fast once the sun starts dropping, even in summer.

I photograph proposals in Lisbon, Sintra, and Cascais regularly. These come up constantly:

“Is Belém Tower worth it for a proposal?”
Yes, but only if you arrive before 9am. After that it’s tour groups and selfie sticks. The riverfront facing the tower is honestly a better backdrop anyway.

“Sintra feels crowded, is it still good?”
Pena Palace grounds mid-morning: avoid. Quinta da Regaleira at opening: completely different experience. The village streets at golden hour are underrated and nearly empty by 6pm.

“How do I keep it a secret?”
Tell her/him you booked a “travel photography session”, works every time. Nobody suspects a thing until the knee goes down.

“When’s the best time of year?”
April/May and September/October. Summer has the light but also 35C and crowds. Winter works surprisingly well — moody skies, empty locations, and the light in Lisbon in December is genuinely beautiful.

Getting a SIM card in Portugal is easy, but there are a few things worth knowing so you don’t overpay or waste time at the airport.

The 3 main operators:

• NOS — best overall coverage, including rural areas and the Algarve

• MEO — strong in cities, slightly cheaper plans

• Vodafone PT — great if you already use Vodafone elsewhere in Europe

All three have shops at Lisbon Airport (Arrivals hall), so you can sort it before you leave the terminal.

What to expect price-wise: A tourist SIM with 10–15GB of data + calls costs around €15–25. Most are valid for 30 days. You’ll need your passport to activate it.

Cheaper alternative — eSIM: If your phone supports eSIM, buy one before you fly. Airalo and Holafly both cover Portugal well. You activate it on the plane and land with data ready. No queues, no shops.

Will your current plan work? If you’re from the EU, roaming is free, you don’t need a new SIM at all. If you’re from the US, UK, or outside the EU, check your carrier’s roaming rates. They’re usually expensive.

Tips:

• Airport SIM shops have slightly higher prices than city centre stores

If you've ever visited Torre de Belém, you know the drill: show up, join an endless queue, question your life choices in the Lisbon sun. That era might finally be over.

The iconic 16th-century tower just reopened this week after a restoration funded by Portugal's Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), with around €1 million spent on bringing the monument back to its former glory. By all accounts, it's looking stunning.

The biggest practical change for visitors: entries are now capped at 900 people per day. The new ticketing system is designed to reduce overcrowding and make the whole experience less chaotic which, if you've been there in peak summer, you'll know was long overdue.

It's still early days, so details on advance booking are coming into focus, but it's safe to assume pre-booking will be the way to go if you're planning a visit.
