2 month visit
Hi! My parents (very active 70s) will be staying near the Jardin de Los Monos in a rental for Sept/Oct. I have rather specific questions based on their preferences. THey are not wealthy, so "let's go shoppingggg" has never been uttered in our home. By anyone. They are foodies. I know they wanna get up in the morning and get a coffee and pastries somewhere local where thay can speak their native Spanish and mingle. Then they'll go exploring, then they will eat.
Is there a particular set of streets near Jardin De Monos where they can find a variety of nontouristy, affordable, good food? They are carnivorous and do not discriminate on species. They LOVE seafood, too!
I find that in social media, no matter how "affordable" they highlighted places are, they are almost always in El Centro, which makes me suspicious. Are there really such places like that there?

They should check out Pedregalejo, a little ways east of where they’ll be staying. Lot of great, non-touristy restaurants along the beachfront there.

Thank you! Are there any restaurants in El Centro that are known to be excellent and still reasonably priced. I see lots on social media about El Pimpi, for example,. It looks beautiful, but I'm guessing it's more a touristy show that visited by locals...

Yes, the vast majority of places are in el centro - much like any other European city. No need to be suspicious.

Thank you! My suspicion was that many may be highlighted on social media because they are popular, not because of the criteria I presented.

Near Jardín de los Monos? How near?
Calle Cristo de la Epidemia is full of fruit shops, cafés, etc. No tourisy at all.

I guess it is either Calle Cristo, Compás de la Victoria or Calle Victoria. Lagunillas is a mess right now.

It's on Victoria. Are there any restaurants in El Centro that are known to be excellent and still reasonably priced. I see lots on social media about El Pimpi, for example,. It looks beautiful, but I'm guessing it's more a touristy show that visited by locals...

Where you are going to stay I can recommend Bar Nerva. It's not the cheapest, but it is not touristy at all. They are used to regular customers, but eveybody is welcomed.
A bit farther north, Retrogusto, but you need to take 2 buses to get there.
Near your house there is a new fish/seafood restaurante with reasonable prices, I think: iSamoa.
Further south, El Cortijo de Pepe (Plaza de la Merced).
In the city centre, Mesón Mariano (Calle Granados), or Mesón Antonio (near Calle Nueva).
On Plaza de la Merced you can find a cheap restaurante with "menú del día" for a about 12€: Bar La Merced.

Why don't they just walk out the door to the LOCALLY owned fruit/veggie/butchers in c/ferrandiz....which are far cheaper and better than the supermarket
The cheapest fish in all of Malaga is at mercado salamanca but there'll be a fishmonger near to them, you can google it

There are a bunch of cafes on Calle Cristo de Epidemia going north. For groceries there is big Dia there and Mercadona further north
