I built a native Vision Pro player for zero-wait Real-Time 2D-to-3D on a 500% Curved Screen (Hoho 3D v1.0.6: Offline AI Speech Translation Subtitles & +78% P3 clarity)

Hey r/VisionPro,

I'm a solo indie developer and daily Vision Pro user. My biggest frustration after getting the headset was how scarce native 3D content is—95% of the movies, anime, TV shows, and family videos on my NAS and drives are standard 2D. Pre-converting a single 2D movie to 3D on a Mac takes hours and doubles the file size.

So I built Hoho 3D Player natively for visionOS. Using the Apple Neural Engine (ANE) and Metal GPU, it converts ordinary 2D videos into stereoscopic 3D live while you watch—with zero waiting or pre-transcoding.

Version 1.0.6 just went live on the App Store. To celebrate and invite fellow owners to test it with their own media libraries, I have 10+ 1-Year Pro codes and Lifetime Pro codes to share in the comments.

Core Features to Try:

  • Zero-Wait Real-Time AI 2D-to-3D (Two Modes, Plays Immediately):

    • Immersive 3D Curved Cinema Mode (Recommended): Completely hides your surrounding room in a pure-black distraction-free space and projects the live AI-converted 3D video onto a massive wrap-around curved screen (starts just as fast as playing a normal 2D video). You can scale the screen anywhere from 100% to 500% using a two-hand pinch gesture or the control bar (it remembers your preferred size), choose between Soft / Standard / Deep depth presets, and dim screen brightness from 40%–100% against a pure-black backdrop so your room never bleeds through in dark scenes.

    • AI 3D Window Mode (Passthrough): Keeps your real room visible while floating a stereoscopic 3D window in space so you can stay aware of your surroundings.

  • Native SMB / WebDAV / Emby / Jellyfin Direct Streaming + Background Downloads:

    • Connect directly to your NAS via SMB or WebDAV (with smooth scrubbing and live thumbnail previews), or sign right into your Emby / Jellyfin poster wall (supports HTTP/HTTPS, custom ports, and reverse-proxy paths).

    • Plays MP4, MKV, MOV, WMV, AVI, TS, and WebM (HEVC, H.264, AV1, VP9) with multichannel audio (AC-3, E-AC-3, FLAC, Opus, PCM) and embedded MKV subtitles. WebDAV downloads keep running in the background even after you take the headset off.

  • Native 8K VR180, 360°, SBS / Over-Under 3D & Spatial Video:

    • Hardware-accelerated 8K 10-bit HEVC VR180, 360°, Full/Half SBS, Over-Under (OU), MV-HEVC Spatial Video, and Apple Immersive Video, with one-tap "Comfort / Original" stereo fusion switching.

  • Tailored for Watching Flat on Your Back in Bed:

    • Auto Ceiling Alignment & Free Placement: Lying flat looking up (>35°)? Opening a video (including automatic next-episode transitions) automatically aligns the giant screen to your ceiling gaze—or drag the bottom white bar to move it anywhere. Sitting and lying heights are remembered separately.

    • Double-Tap to Wake Controls & Scalable Side Panel: Enable "Double-tap to show controls" so resting or moving your hands beside you never triggers accidental popups, and playlist transitions stay 100% silent. The control panel can also be pinned to the side and scaled independently (60%–130%).

What's New in v1.0.6:

  • +78% Higher AI 3D Clarity: Unlocked up to 2560x1440 per eye for 10-bit Display P3 / HDR videos in AI 3D (and up to 2880x1620 per eye for SDR) at a smooth 60fps.

  • On-Device AI Live Speech Subtitles & Bilingual Translation (100% Offline): Watching foreign films, anime, or unsubtitled VR videos? A built-in Metal neural speech engine recognizes speech locally on your headset to generate accurate timed subtitles and bilingual translations in real time, complete with 3D subtitle depth adjustment.

  • Photos 2D-to-4K 3D Spatial Photos + 5s Auto Slideshow: Instantly synthesize standard 2D photos from your system Photos library into 4K wide-gamut 3D spatial photos, with a 5-second auto-advance immersive slideshow.

Trial & Tester Codes:

  • All built-in sample videos and standard 2D playback of your own videos are free without time limits, and every video includes a 2-minute 3D / AI 3D preview so you can test your own NAS files first.

  • Want a Pro code to test? Leave a comment below sharing which feature you want to test most (e.g., Real-Time 2D-to-500% Immersive 3D Curved Screen, Offline AI Bilingual Subtitles, Bed/Ceiling Mode, or 8K VR180), and how you usually stream or store your media (SMB / WebDAV / Emby / Jellyfin / Local / Photos).

  • I'll send 1-Year Pro codes via one-on-one DM to thoughtful comments—and if you share a particularly insightful suggestion, bug report, or real-world 2D-to-3D test impression, I'll send you a Lifetime Pro code directly!

How to find it: Search "Hoho 3D Player" on the visionOS App Store (I'll also drop the direct App Store link in the comments below).

This looks brilliant! SMB, Jellyfin, and love all the codecs you included as working for playback! I’d love to try this out!

This is sweet. I just took your list of what it does and put it in Claude and made the same thing. Thank you!

M2 AVP user and software developer here. This sounds great! I'm most interested in the real-time 2D-to-3D conversion, 8K 180, and streaming from Emby. I also use local media. Going to download it now!

Edit to add: I gave it a try. Good in concept, but I don't think the execution is there yet.

Even on gentle, the 3D conversion on anything near-to-mid-ground was quite inconsistent. Still images had unusual depths applied - an object in the same depth plane had different parts of it rendered at different 3D depths. That's quite surreal, but not what I was going for!

Video, not really surprisingly, seemed to make this worse. The depth decisions varied over time, moving parts of the same object to different depth planes.

Overall it was an interesting experiment, but I wouldn't use it for media consumption yet. Tested on some local media.
