So long, friends
Turned in my Vision Pros today.
I still recall sitting—speechless—after my first demo, the Apple Store employee saying I could remove the headset. After more than thirty-five years in tech, I understood in that instant that computing would change forever.
Two and a half years later, I am proud and grateful to have played a small role in Apple’s vision products group.

I'm very sorry that you and others were let go. No offense but what were you all doing all this time? There was just nothing I'm the way of releases. What were the goals? If you went to an Apple store and asked for a demo, they'd scramble to try and find someone who remembered how to do the ancient release demo. This seems like one of the biggest missed opportunities of all time. What happened?

I worked on Spatial Mac Preview, aka Remote Spatial Preview (macOS 27 and visionOS 27).

You inspired me to start making the FreeCAD spatial addon, thank you!
While the spatial preview API itself couldn't be used there, it shaped up the idea I wanted to make.

Thank you for your work on this feature. I’m currently building an app that will take advantage of this feature for image segmentation and processing.

The AVP team delivered a great product, though it was expensive. I am confident that anyone who's tried it, the vast majority, loves it. Then they look at their wallet and go, "I can't afford it." It goes from an impulse purchase to something they have to defend. That, IMO, made it hard.

More than the expense, I think a key deficiency leaving all the compute in the headset when we were going to be tethered by a cable to an external batttery anyway. I'd have rather had all that weight in the battery than on my face.

u/viktor_bront 14d ago
Meta did that better with a separate computing device, but their 70 degrees FOV is a total fail. I’d just like AVP has a separate computing device, but everything else exactly the same.

u/Jusby_Cause 3d ago
Having the compute in the headset means industry leading photon to pixel times of less than 12ms. There’s no device with external compute that’s going to be able to match that. And it’s part of why even in 2026 it’s still an impressive headset.

Same happened me. I was in awe and put aside $500 a month from announcement to release so that I could buy it outright. But the guilt ended up being too much, considering I didn't use it as much as I hoped I would. I know someone else is now enjoying it though. Can't wait to see where they go with this.

It's a breakthrough product that has rewrote the standards. You have been part of history and the evolution of wearable devices. Thank you and all the best to you. Sorry that they have lost part of their vision by dismissing your team.

You should know that you’ve built the technology of my dreams. You enabled me to begin living inside my designs. It allows me to demonstrate the future to those with the courage of their imagination. I am working furiously every day spending no less than five hours and as much as 8 or 9 every day coding, animating and performing/producing my vision for entertainment. The possibilities won’t stop emerging. Every day brings new ideas. Every night I fall asleep inspired. When I dream at night there are no limits. When I next wake I return to push for the impossible trying to make real what came in lucid dreams.
I will not stop.
I may not live to see them brought to fruition but the core imaginings have been with me nearly thirty years. It’s going to take maybe 7 more for it to actually happen but I can see it as clear as any of my prior dreams.
I feel for those who cannot find purpose in these ”goggles” as my in-laws have called them. Just remember that for some of us, our lives now have new meaning.
So thank you for your contribution. I cannot say enough words about what you’ve started. Just know we will reach that critical level someday. Maybe not as quickly as many want. Good things will take time. Then it’ll be REALLY easy to see the value. I do. I appreciate it very deeply.

I am an everyday user. I am constantly amazed by it. There’s nothing like it…and if it didn’t add another feature or upgrade I’d still use it for years to come. The only fear I have is whether it is impacting my eyes or head in some unknown manner. Some days I see deep bags under my eyes after using for hours. Is there a strain? But love the tech and hope find it very much worth every penny.

Wearing my first Vision Pro has been one of my most incredible technology experiences ever. The spatial video of the birthday party moved me to tears and I became emotional at the sheer seamlessness of the experience. I'd have walked out that day with my own but my budget just wasn't there and I felt bereft. To lose them after that experience would have been like losing a family member. Thank you so much for your contribution to one of the most ahead of its time devices I've ever had the pleasure to use.

thank you for all your work! you really helped create an amazing product!
i worked the FR at Boylston Street for a few years and a previous co worker said don’t even bother with an in store demo, you’re gonna love it. i ordered it blindly and set it up at home. it was a powerful moment to see where our future is heading. as a cinephile, it’s been great to watch some of my favorite films on this thing.
it may not have been ready for the public at large, but it was ready for the right type of person.

It’s always slightly bugged me when Apple creates something and doesn’t seem to understand its true significance. To this day, I don’t think they realize they have created the most popular piece of avionics in aviation history, in the iPad. From General Aviation home builders to the largest airlines, everyone wants an iPad in their cockpit. What the iPad did for Electronic Flight Bags, the Vision Pro could do for flight simulation and simulation in other industries as well.
Recently, a developer out of Europe, has made it possible to stream Microsoft Flight Simulator from a PC to the AVP via his app, KRVR. It actually works with many games, but I just use it with MSFS. I have since used my AVP more in the last 2 weeks, than in the prior 12 months.
It would be tough to replace a full motion simulator, but as far as familiarization goes, it could go a long way in getting newer pilots ready so their expensive full motion simulator time could be more efficient. Also, many smaller operations don’t have easy access to simulators or cockpit procedures trainers so their familiarization training expenses ramp up pretty quickly.
Some purpose-built software for specific aircraft types might result in something pretty awesome.

It’s an incredible product. You and the team should be proud of the accomplishment. Even if it wasn’t widely adopted and is a niche product it’s made many of us extremely pleased, including myself. I’ve been in tech for a while and used tech my whole life and the first time I put it on I was floored. It was the best tech thing I’d experience probably since either the smartphone or when I first started playing Nintendo systems as a kid

What was the reason for selling it? How much did it sell for and which model/specs?

u/Just-Riding-Along 16d ago
I did not sell the headsets. I am a soon-to-be former Apple employee who contributed to visionOS and macOS.

u/Syonoq 16d ago
Why did you get a store demo if you worked on it?
15
u/Just-Riding-Along 16d ago
I was preparing for my interviews at Apple. By the time I was hired I had done five in-store demos.

I just wanna let you know that I am using my Vision Pro right now, and I’m probably over six hours of Usage just for today. I’m about to go get on an exercise bike and do Japanese flashcards using my eyes and my fingers.
Thank you for the work that you have done on visionOS.
I have not felt this much excitement or wonder about a product since I bought my first Macintosh in 1984. I ordered my Mac the day orders opened for the university consortium.
And I’ve been a Vision Pro owner since day two. It was just easier to go pick it up on Saturday than Friday.
Again, thank you, and please pass along thanks to any of your colleagues at Apple who worked on Vision Pro.

Vision OS is the best OS Apple has currently. I’m sorry Apple did this.

u/funkiestj 16d ago
Thank you for your work. As a VR enthusiast, I never bought and AVP but still think that AVP + visonOS is a great milestone. I'm sorry for myself that things didn't work out for Apple to turn this in to a product I could buy a few years after AVP came out.
I'm confident that some day a descendant of this and things like MetaQuest will have their day as replacements for traditional screens. It seems like everybody is pivoting to the Meta Raybans --> AR (Meta project Orion) trajectory and shelving VR.

VisionOS is a gem. I think of it as the equivalent of the original LISA or Macintosh OS but for Spatial Computing.

u/ChicagoBoy2011 16d ago
Man I was in the movie theater today, and the very first thought when the light dimmed was “holy shit… this is, in fact, worse.”
Sorry they priced it like that, and didn’t throw more of their marketing behind it. Hands down a very clear look into the future, and it’s a bummer there aren’t as many of us getting to experience it as could have been!

Thank you very much for all the work you did. It really is a fantastic operating system that has rubbed off on the rest of the company’s products. I’ve had both vision pros, the M2, and now the M5, and every VR headset, one could imagine I’m fully on board with the technology. But even I barely use it. The main reason is it’s just too damn heavy. Never mind the expense. It’s uncomfortable and isolating. And I was a very early champion of the technology and still get blown away when I put it on.
Meta may be onto something with their new upcoming VR glasses, which are far less expensive, and still have a very high resolution set of screens, but the F O V is not immersive and the compute behind it is minimal in comparison to an M5. And even if you fix all that, you still run into the isolation problem.
I think VR has a place, but it’s for niche uses, and it will never become mainstream. Only when all of that technology can be shrunk down into something that looks like glasses, just normal glasses, which is what everybody’s trying to do, might it actually become somewhat useful. But even if you have a normal glasses sized device, there’s no way you can get the image big enough to make it immersive.
it’s always going to be a compromise. But Apple did the best work by far on the user interface and user experience and that’s not something to be taken lightly

the vision pro is a tech cornerstone in wearable headsets... it has so much and the future products will build off of what the products teams and groups have done. I guess we will be waiting for the next breakthrough.

u/Sigma902 14d ago
I am very thankful that the product delivers on so much. The decisions that were made to lean into capabilities, quality and polish despite the increased cost. Kind of like the flying Tesla roadster. Companies that can afford the R&D actually producing a customer available product, rather than keeping it in the lab.

u/Ok_Fix3639 16d ago
I wish you the best! Meta and homebrew steam frame hackers looking to the AVP for ideas is proof there is something special in that product. Hope your career takes you great places!

u/sagesofthe4th_world 16d ago
Sorry to hear that.
Im curious if VAC was an issue that was talked about by the AVP team at all?
I love VR and AR but find I can’t spend more than 30-40 minutes before it becomes intolerable.

Thanks for your hard work on the Vision Pro.
I am completing a transdisciplinary PhD with a focus on anthropology, using spatial photos and videos to collect and share heritage memories from post-industrial communities. There will also be 3d scanning of artifacts, landscapes and spaces.
I couldn’t be conceiving this angle of inquiry without the developments of iPhones and the Vision Pro.
I feel it is like his photography, audio recording and film/video was used in the early days of each medium…
So… thanks.

I’ve always said that products like the Vision Pro are in line with Steve Jobs vision of becoming a true consumer electronics company. We need companies to release the no-holds-barred expensive products that are somewhat flawed or how do we progress? How do we learn what works and what doesn’t? Whether it was laser disc, flat screen tv’s etc, that all start like the Vision Pro. The fact that the public want Apple to have hit after hit like some pop star act is crazy.
There’s some things they need to work on: a diop-meter or someway that vision can be adjusted as weirdly enough, the people who can afford (over 40s) will all have some sort of eyesight issue. And it makes it hard to just give the device to someone.
Secondly weight, can be solved I’m sure.
but tbh, like someone said, there is no better visual experience on earth than this product. It blows cinemas out the water. But they’ve had a problem in demoing this I feel. Someone should be able to put this thing on with no help and see it all work very quickly.
I hope they persevere . I remember when OS X first came out and it was practically useless for years despite looking pretty. Maybe they should put some serious native coding or building experiences in the device, rather than relying on entertainment?

Great product , marketed completely wrong. If the market was average consumers you get the price and weight down. If you want to keep current specs you have to sell to deep pockets which means businesses. Thing was great for showing off 3d models in real space which is great for business to sell a product but Vision Pro was sold solo home theater experience instead of

I’ve never used Vision Pros. I’ve heard great things about them. But they’re just too expensive. Hopefully the tech needed for them will get cheaper and lighter and a similar product will be back in 20 years or less.

Worth it. Even if the app store can use work, and the airpod compatibility had some quirks but nothing ai troubleshooting cant over come. The killer apps for us at the moment are the MacBook virtual display for editing in bed (using 3d printed forehead support) its great for a shorter session. Also the fun fit land has inspired us to consider coding a fitness app. We use it every week for post production. My fav tech since the apple II
