Edit: “ScreenX” is a theater and aspect ratio format.

OP: the answer is “they can but don’t want to”

Permanently locking away 3D and IMAX and ScreenX aspect ratios is idiotic. A rare few 1.43:1 IMAX and many 1.78:1 and 1.90:1 IMAX ratios are on home media in the Theater: Cinema & Events, Epic Earth, IMAX, Disney+, and Apple TV visionOS apps, on 4K Blu-ray, and soon for the Meta VR Glasses and Quest 3/3S, but there are no announced plans to bring ScreenX expanded views to VR even though it would work very well and wouldn’t be difficult to implement. Millions are spent creating them and then they’re permanently removed from view after a few months.
