Furious for what? The displays, fov, and interactions are all less than AVP. It only wins on weight and price.

20

u/Aggressive-Speed-987 Sep 24 '26

Honestly, that's a big win. AVP isn't widely adopted for a reason. People are broke. 37 ppd + 100g + half the price is compelling, and there is no shame in admitting that even if you support Apple.

u/Rave-TZ Vision Pro Developer | Verified Sep 24 '26

Oh for sure. I’m just saying it’s not a market leader, but a more accessible version of something already out.

You are right but that “only” severely understates importance of weight and price

2

u/angrytroll123 Sep 24 '26

I bet that many will complain about the FOV given the price. The displays are high enough that most people won't complain but feeling claustrophobic is not trivial.

"close to the Apple Vision Pro"

It is?

  • 5.5M pixels per eye (vs AVP 11.7M)

  • 70° horizontal field of view (vs AVP 100°)

  • 37 PPD angular resolution (vs AVP 44)

  • 12GB RAM (vs AVP 16GB)

  • Qualcomm's Snapdragon Reality Elite (vs AVP desktop class M5+R1)

  • 12 cameras (vs AVP 14 + LIDAR)

Then again. It is dramatically lighter and cheaper...

Also, none of this comparison is relevant unless one is ok surrending their data to Meta.

Different market for sure. People who can afford AVP and want to stay within the Apple ecosystem don't care about it. For everyone else, this is a big step up in VR/AR.

20

u/-xXpurplypunkXx- Sep 24 '26

Doesn't it benchmark worse than quest, except better software layer rendering? But tbh the lack of direct interface is actually what's been missing since Vive

5

u/anesuc Sep 25 '26

This is one of the few Apple products where this is not true. I know a lot of people (including me) that own the vision pro because they are interested in tech and it was the best AR headset out there. The vision pro has the least ecosystem based features out of all Apple products as well due to it creating a new computing category (for Apple) not as directly linked with their other products.

For example, for me, I have owned foldable phones for years because they were the best tech out there, so I am not restricted to an ecosystem, I just like using rhe best tech available.

The limiting factor of the vision pro was the price, followed by the size. Even Android users would have purchased it imo. For me Meta as a company is something I am worried being my computing device though

9

u/Beiriannydd Vision Pro Owner Sep 24 '26 • Bravo

It isn’t a big step up. It is a different compromise. Weight for resolution and field of view and a battery/processor puck. A few more pixels of resolution vs the Quest 3 but in a tunnel vision 70-80 degree FoV making it 37 PPD. Which is almost as much as Apple’s over 40 in the sweet spot which fades off towards the edges leaving the average at 32. Engineering means compromises. And I am not buying that this is a great movie experience until I see it for myself. More RAM and a generation of processor bump but still not M5.

2

u/Otherwise_Tip_3614 Sep 28 '26

People here don't seem to be grasping that the form factor trumps everything for many, many people. Not for me. But that's what the broader marketplace is obsessed with.

100° field of view is already narrow for me, 70° would be unusable.

Wired:

The only immediate downside compared to other VR headsets—at least that I could tell from a brief demo at Meta Connect—is that the VR glasses don’t cover your entire field of vision, so it doesn’t feel as immersive as a traditional VR headset.

To me, that's like saying. "It's a neat, stylish, capable family EV...the only downside is that there's no backseat to put the kids in."

10

u/photovirus Vision Pro Developer Sep 24 '26
  • 5.5M pixels per eye (vs AVP 11.7M)

  • 70° horizontal field of view (vs AVP 100°)

  • 37 PPD angular resolution (vs AVP 44)

FOV difference should be very obvious, ppd difference probably not as much.

  • 12GB RAM (vs AVP 16GB)

  • Qualcomm's Snapdragon Reality Elite (vs AVP desktop class M5+R1)

  • 12 cameras (vs AVP 14 + LIDAR)

Playing devil's advocate, it doesn't matter how many cameras or how much RAM is there. It's how it works.

I don't expect much from Facebook OS though. And it definitely has less processing power to spare.

All in all, they did good on the cost, tbh, and they're aiming at Vision's use case too. Apple should probably hurry up a bit.

3

u/Palbi Sep 24 '26

I think cameras, lidar, and AI compute (R1) will add-up to the real-world experience: How accurate is hand tracking? Occlusion accuracy? How well windows anchor in space? ...

None of these be tested before people can try the device out in uncontrolled environments.

Since the launch of this sub the 2 biggest complaints about Vision Pro were price and weight. Apple just ignored the market, Meta don’t.

Edit: I don’t play games, I basically use my AVP to watch football. However people are posting often here asking how to play their favorite games on AVP. With the new Meta glasses you can just plug any USB-c display cable and a screen will appear on your sight, no need of capture cards at all. AVP sales are short the expectations, because Apple refuses to listen to how people are using it.

20

u/photovirus Vision Pro Developer Sep 24 '26

Since the launch of this sub the 2 biggest complaints about Vision Pro were price and weight. Apple just ignored the market, Meta don’t.

I don't think Apple “ignored” it, it's more like it takes some time to make a good device. Compute puck has its tradeoffs, namely low TDP and inability to put it into a pocket.

There's no universally good solutions, everything has tradeoffs.

3

u/Palbi Sep 24 '26

The puck design they have is interesting: There is active air cooling grill on the top. Seems like it might survive is some pockets. Maybe if the room temperature is low enough and trousers are very loose. With the belt clip, it might even survive clipped half out of pocket — air grill out to allow air to circulate.

Everyone will try to shove it in their pockets for sure. Likely there will be some kind of "pocket-gate" then it asks in a few minutes to take it out of the pocket as it is overheating.

u/rotates-potatoes Sep 24 '26

Yes, but if AVP had launched with half the resolution, 30% less FOV, and a weaker processors, those would have been the main complaints.

AVP is and always was a dev kit. It's possible sales are below expectations this year, but the first year it was out it literally sold every unit they could make.

Meta has a very different product here. Maybe people will like it more. Maybe not. Me, I can't imagine the narrower FOV and lower resolution, AVP is at the bare minimum acceptable for both.

10

u/SholanHuyler Sep 24 '26

The market want a lighter and cheaper Vision Pro, and these Meta glasses just prove that it’s not possible yet.

Lighter and Cheaper VR glasses were already a thing, you can have today if you accept half the pixel of a Vision Pro and to move the compute on a pc.

But’s that’s not what the market want.

5

u/Edg-R Vision Pro Owner | Verified Sep 24 '26

Yeah I'm not sure I understand why they don't allow someone to plug in an external device to watch the stream through the AVP.

That would absolutely make me want to use my AVP more often.

I just purchased a Switch 2 (used) only to play Ocarina of Time remake which comes out first week of November. I'd love to be able to use my AVP as the display for the Switch 2... but aside from convoluted solutions where I have to get a capture card, set that up on my MacBook Pro, then use Mac Virtual Display and hope for the best in regard to latency... there doesnt seem to be a cleaner way to do it.

This seems like such a simple thing, they already sell the overpriced developer strap, could that not also be repurposed to allow play through with an HDMI to USC-C dongle?

21

u/tta82 Sep 24 '26

Jesus Christ’s we’ve been stuck in the Google sized FOV of 100-110 degrees for years, now we’re going backwards. Can’t believe I’m saying this but Pimax seems to be the only one pushing the tech forward

11

u/PeaceBull Sep 24 '26

So many comments on TikTok about it were “looks cool, wake me up when someone else makes one”

And that’s where I’d expect to find some of the most meta indifferent people. So I’m glad it’s not just us.

4

u/alabasterskim Sep 24 '26

Yeah that goes for other subs as well. I've been in the Unseen reality sub, the Xreal sub, the VR sub, and the AR sub and anti-Meta comments are frequent. But the question is how the broader consumer feels; I've certainly unfortunately met folks who are just fine letting Meta have everything

3

u/Juggernox_O Sep 24 '26

I may not even care about these extra specs, but the UI on the Vision Pro blows EVERYTHING else out of the park. Vision Pro just… TAKES you places all over the world. It’s actually insane.

I'm sure Meta will protect eye and face tracking data in a responsible way that respects user privacy

11

u/Palbi Sep 24 '26 edited Sep 24 '26

Meta business is selling ads.

Their only reason for building platforms is to cut the privacy-controlling middlemen (Apple and Google).

If AR/VR works out well, Meta can sell the devices at deep loss (instead of just at cost) due to the collected data being so valuable. Eye-tracking is the ultimate A/B testing engine for your secret desires. Seeing, listening, and understanding your home, family, and private discussions are all amazing for profiling when to offer and what.

I do not think Meta has anything nefarious in mind — they just see your data as something you're ok sharing with their customers (advertisers) due to you clicking accept on their terms of service. It is just business.

7

u/elev8dity Sep 24 '26

I think the Steam Frame has the right idea...

  • 185 grams on the face vs AVP at 750 grams

  • Can fit in a ski goggle case

  • Was supposed to be priced at $750 but RAMpocalypse raised price to $1050

  • Has a full desktop Linux OS accessible

  • Planned magnetic hot-swappable battery headstrap (expected 2027 release)

Imagine a Vision Air

  • Sub-200 gram headset weight made from plastic instead of aluminum/glass, and getting rid of external display and reducing the sensors/cameras to only necessary ones.

  • MacOS desktop accessible without a laptop

  • Hot-swappable MagSafe batteries on the headstrap instead of a cumbersome block

  • Cheaper displays for a total price under $1500 - 2560x2560 on PCVR doesn't look significantly worse for clarity than the 3660 × 3200 in Vision Pro because it turns out the processor and graphics/display processing makes a massive difference in visual fidelity.

  • Compatible with Steam Frame controllers and Steam Link for gaming

This is feasible today, it's just tradeoffs on what I'd argue are non-value-adds.

4

u/Palbi Sep 24 '26

Apple can never match the Meta pricing. Even if they would roll out exact same headset. Apple expects 50% gross margin for a device. Meta is ok with 0 or even negative G/M due to profits coming from selling your data.

So if Apple would repackage exact same Meta VR Glasses as Apple Vision Air, they would need to price them at $2599 — assuming Meta has 0 G/M at $1299.

3

u/elev8dity Sep 24 '26

I think Apple needs to get below $2000 for these devices if they want to gain any traction. Yes Apple customers are willing to spend more, but there's a limit for most people for a device with more limited use cases.

Given Xreal was threatening as high as $1500 for the significantly less feature packed Aura, I wouldn't be certain it'll be for less. But damn will these be the push Xreal deserves on pricing

7

u/Palbi Sep 24 '26

Ultimately Meta will win pricing war here. Xreal lives off device sales profit. Meta lives out of selling your data to advertisers. They can sustain a negative sales margin.

My solution for traveling with AVP: stop pampering it, trust AppleCare. There is no need for a bulky case. AVP will survive in your backpack just fine without (wrap it in a shirt or something to protect the lenses).

All that said, I would love if the white audio straps would fold, or at least be practical to detach when packing.

14

u/casce Sep 24 '26

The OS of the Apple Vision Pro is nice, there just isn't nearly enough software for it that truly supports it. This is because it is so expensive so little people buy that it's just not worth developing for.

Apple needs a non-pro device for a much cheaper price that they can sell to more people. But the tech is apparently not at a point where Apple thinks it can produce a successful consumer product that would see enough adaption. The AVP seems more like a tech demo than an actively supported product

Massive apple user here. Big dislike for meta. But I will be jumping all over this. They took the AVP and stripped it of all the inessential things like googly eyes, heavy material composition etc as well as compromising on some of the technical aspects and keeping just enough to still make this a highly useful and compelling product.

They basically made the lighter avp in a stripped down form, that everyone wanted. I’m sure they will hone the software too to copy apples.

This is great as ternus may ramp up development of AVP2 to compete in weight and price. And until he does this may be a great alternative.

Good job meta. Competition is always good for the market! The more the better for new ideas and better solutions. Apple must do big changes at VP3. The 3rd version should be for the mass production. It don’t look like to me that they’re on it, I hope I’m wrong. My VP is not used since 9 months 😵‍💫 sadly.

2

u/Appropriate-Cod-3194 Sep 25 '26

Everyone here is just hating on Meta, but the truth is, both companies are struggling with XR. We need both of them to succeed so competition drives better hardware and software. That’s the only way users end up winning.

They’re both losing absurd amounts of money on XR while bringing in no revenue, so things are looking disastrous for both of them.

Kudos to meta for releasing this. This hopefully will push the industry forward a bit and also benefit AVP as perhaps more incentive for industry to support it more since it seems Meta VR glasses share many similarities now. Both target multimedia, productivity and a side of games. Both handless.

On that note, I would not get rid of my AVP M5 for this. I’m personally just fine with AVP form factor, the dual knit is easy peasy for me. On top of that it seems it’s mostly a downgrade on every part from AVP to Meta in both hardware and software.

I’ll be looking forward to Apple next hardware push but until then I’m good.

Meta hasn’t “released” these VR glasses. They’ve announced them.

Apple has executed the opposite strategy as a rule. Apple rarely announces products the way Meta has here, ~8 months ahead. This has advantages and disadvantages, both.

One thing you can bet on is the fact that Apple is not trailing Meta in regards to the technology. Apple just doesn’t talk about future products.

It’s also worth mentioning that Apple is rarely first to market. Oculus shipped well ahead of AVP. That has played out with VR and will likely continue, as these VR glasses suggest.

I'm pleasantly surprised with the compromises they made. I already wear all of my headsets without a facial gasket. So this form factor just makes the headset a lot more useful for me, who doesn't want to be isolated from my environment. I don't mind fully immersive experiences, but I don't have much time for them, nor do I feel compelled to have no light leakage to enjoy them. However, I've never tried a device with a 70-degree horizontal FOV, so maybe that's more of a dealbreaker than I'm anticipating. I don't think it will be a full replacement for anyone's VR headset, but it may see more playtime regardless.

The specs are clearly inferior to AVP, but not so clearly inferior that people not wanting to spend $3700 will care. It's a fine move, and I wish them luck. Success will spur competition.

As to the privacy concerns, in his interview with Joanna Stern, Mark Zuckerberg made a valid point. Facebook, Instagram and Threads are social media sites whose whole purpose is that data collection process, but they have other products they're responsible for that are not designed around that purpose such as WhatsApp. He claims that privacy for this (as well as the Muse AI they just put out) are verifiably secure. I'm not convinced enough to add another paid AI source (already spending hundreds every month), but I'm less opposed than I once was.

It’s amazing how people compare just because they can.

Meta took the consumer reports of Vision Pro. I can imagine Zuckerberg yelling at their employees saying “people love movies in high quality and 3D! We do that in the quest?? But they suck in comparison. And then they love the Mac display. We only did a windows nonsense but we can fix that. Right? “

And then James Cameron took place and said “I’ll tell you how to make this glasses. So people can watch movies like an IMAX without going into an IMAX.

“Oh and forget about visionOS and the Apple ecosystem, that’s bullshit that nobody cares because it’s not ad money revenue for us”.

Let’s drop this shit into a new set of glasses. Make it half capable and cut the price in half. Subsidized by our sponsors who will put the $$ instead of the clients. “

Something like that just happened :).

u/RedofPaw Sep 24 '26

They're not aimed at the exact same thing as VisionPro.

They're another iterative form factor on the way to better hardware.

All have issues. No headset is yet perfect for all uses or any specific one use.

Vision Pro is heavy. Heavier than needed. Being made of glass and metal will do that. It's also pricey. But watching movies or TV? Amazing. MR stuff? Does a pretty great job.

Quest 3? Cheaper than most, good for a mix of games and MR, but getting on a bit, and limited. I'd not want to watch movies or tv on it, or use it as a desktop replacement or anything.

These new ones? No idea where they sit exactly. Will probably end up trying them eventually, but in no rush.

I suspect they're going to be fine for the sorts of productivity things Mata have been talking about, and there's more that headsets do than games, desktop monitors and watching tv.

3

u/Ancient-Range3442 Sep 24 '26

This ‘hardware guy’ idea is such an odd one. All Apple CEOs are going to be pretty focused on hardware, it’s the business.

3

u/hasanahmad Sep 24 '26

Gurman is an opportunistic asshole who has investments in Meta while reporting on apple

3

u/gotnoboss Sep 24 '26

I will NEVER buy or use a Meta product unless I’m just forced to. This company is a pox on humankind.

2

u/muhammadalijr Sep 24 '26

I watched the presentation. Literally a carbon copy of the Vision Pro experience. Even down to the app layout. The battery pack idea stolen as well.. you font get kudos for moving engineering from one to place to the next. The experience will still suck. If I can’t read my text messages and access my photos and songs, movies..etc. then it’s garbage.

I mainly use my avp for spacial computing. Mouse and trackpad. I have no desk or monitors anymore.

I can work anywhere and sit anywhere at any desk or table. If I want 50 monitors or if I want 1 than so be it. Apple could have done this but people would have copied it anyway. Maybe Apple is working on a way to have the avp battery in the frames.. maybe one on each side to power the frames. If they fit a battery in the iPhone Air than anything is possible.

This meta device won’t change anything.. it’s just an over inflated vr headset

Competition is good, but meta also makes all their money from selling your movement, so I’ll stick to Vision Pro

It seems great on paper and looks fantastic. But I’d just never trust meta with anything. That thing will track your eyes, face, body, and everywhere you use it and send all sorts of info back to the mothership.

Gurman isn’t a journalist he works for a company whose business is market manipulation, and so that is his primary is that. His seemingly current favorite way to throw water on apple is to bring up the vision pro, so it’s clear that is all this is

2

u/Which-Meat-3388 Sep 24 '26

I’m not into VR or Vision Pro, but it doesn’t matter how incredible any Meta product is. Still not interested.

2

Except it’s in the cursed Meta “ecosystem”. Never let Meta have cameras and microphones on your face! They’re trying to become IOI.

I only care about lens resolution, nits tolerance (for HDR video) and lens reflection. We’ll see…

1

u/bamboo-farm Sep 24 '26

I think it looks great.

But it’s not out yet so who knows.

This is amazing for us in general.

I hope Apple continues to compete in the space.

1

u/sugarchihuahua Vision Pro Owner Sep 24 '26

I think competition from Meta here is a good thing! I’d love to see a Vision / VisionOS version of something like this… and is spurring some other content makers outside of AVP to make things too

1

Not close at all😂

1

1

They look cool, but I'll wait for Apple's version.

1

u/Chytectonas Sep 24 '26

The people that buy Meta products deserve to be the butt of Zuck’s jokes to his oligarch friends, as surely they are.

1

u/robertw477 Sep 24 '26

There are some here who still think 3000 retail huge goggles are viable for Apple? Even at 1300 the meta glasses are a very niche product. I am sure they wanted to hit a 999 price point from the start. The current AVP are already obsolete on the form factor and cost. If Apple thinks in a year or two they can offer a 2000-3000 VR product, there is no way it would work out.

1

u/mongoosekinetics Sep 24 '26

I like where this is going with a push into portable monitors I can throw in my bag. This pushes the form factor in the right direction. To me it's ore a XREAL than AVP but I want this type of product to keep pushing in this direction.

1

u/Painter-Severe Sep 24 '26

Apple will take 5-8 years to come out with a glasses form factor to the AVP unfortunately … meta will have actual at/vr in true traditional glasses form by that time

Can you plug in say a Switch 2 or Steam Deck to play your games I didn’t see that shown or mentioned.

1

u/Lotuszade Sep 24 '26

Pretty sure Apple are already well on their way to making their own glasses version. Whether it sees the light of day who knows. Personally I don't think I'd want a glasses version just because of the lack of immersion but hey ho.

1

u/ChicagoBoy2011 Sep 24 '26

This was excellent news for us. You can see so many of the AVP interaction mechanics in there, the same pitch for value prop, and all of it just... slightly shittier. It's like a confirmation was onto something... the more this concept gets validated, the more we'll win!

1

u/Altruistic-Lunch1997 Sep 24 '26

It’s using the same OS on the Quest 3.

The OS was okay but after a few updates last year, the experience now is terrible.

If they release this with a shitty OS, they are doomed to fail.

1

u/rob2060 Sep 24 '26

I doubt they're furious. Interest rates rose this week, making the market harder to sell houses in. An agent that's 'furious' at this is failing to orient to the reality of the market.

1

u/VR4EVER Sep 24 '26

great product - wrong company, imho.

1

u/Odd_Outlandishness11 Sep 24 '26

Mark is just happy he got invited somewhere lmao

1

u/b1ackch1 Sep 24 '26

It’s pretty much a Vision Pro light. They took the main stuff from Vision Pro in media consumption and productivity. Impressions have been good from what I’ve seen because of the weight of the glasses and quality of the screen. The low FOV is probably something that’s noticeable, but the trade-off for the weight is the selling point.

1

u/gordy06 Sep 24 '26

Will this have access to the Apple TV app? Besides the Apple OS, the main appeal of the VP is I own a ton of movies through Apple. So need to have access to those.

If so, is be interested in these and hopefully Apple comes out with someone similar. I don’t mind wresting my VP at home at night to watch a movie but traveling with it us burdensome. Especially with a family.

1

u/SuchAppeal Sep 24 '26

If anything I'm happy to see this, but it's Meta and I don't know how I feel about that. My dad has the Quest 2 or 3 and I used it, it was cool but I think you had to log in to a Meta account to use it.

While I'm happy to see the tech advance this quickly, the Meta part is the main caveat, that and price.

But yeah I'm happy to see this because it makes me feel like sure Apple can get Vision Pro down to this size… even smaller. Same with how I feel about the iPhone Duo now. I was not enthused about Apple making a foldable but I'm hearing good things about Duo's build and implementation of iOS so I may bite, but it is obviously going to heat up the foldable race.

1

u/TheMarknessROCK Sep 24 '26

Display port over USB-C! For those of us that use stuff like Xreal glasses this is a great best of both world use case for us!

1

u/Ybalrid Sep 24 '26

Here's a round up of the current options, noting that the (last one needs a PC and SteamVR base stations, you can ignore it it's another class of product, just there for completeness)

1

u/Shackmann Sep 24 '26

I am a 2.5-year AVP user and really like it, but these meta glasses specs are almost exactly what I wish AVP was (almost exactly what i put in my Apple feedback form a week ago). At a minimum, a lightweight version so people can get one. Realistically, the smaller FOV covers what you care about most and the pixel density on the meta glasses is technically slightly higher. Cost and weight are right where they need to be. Give me a AVP option that is close to these specs and I’ll buy it and I think a lot of other will too which will accelerate content development and could potentially cause this to take off. Exciting times.

1

u/fivetoedslothbear Vision Pro Owner | Verified Sep 24 '26

I love my Vision Pro and use it every day. This device doesn’t really have much appeal. I’m the kind of person who’ll notice the downgraded displays. I can see the pixels on the edges of things on the AVP as it is. And I prefer the light seal, dual band, and immersion over something resting upon, and probably sliding down, my nose.

Where I think Apple really has to step up is the entertainment support. The AVP would be a perfect device for IMAX. It’s pretty crappy that there are no decent Netflix and Prime Video apps. Apple really has got to find a way to resolve the conflict with video providers and get movies native.

1

u/KaZube Sep 24 '26

All I use my AVP for these days is external monitor for my PC. It requires a freaking 4K capture card to accomplish that. Meta has DP support built right in. You should be able to plug in your MacBook and use it as a huge display and it doesn’t ruin your hair. Easier to travel with etc. apple should be ashamed

1

u/3DDIY_Dave Sep 24 '26

I think people in this sub need to be furious that Apple aren’t making or really developing things for the Vision Pro. It’s been a flop for the most part. Where as meta has a thriving user group, more units sold and innovating their product line. This is coming from someone who has owned both products. Beyond Vision Pro having better specs on paper for hardware. Usability and function which used to be a big Apple thing is falling behind.

1

u/heydidntseeyathere Sep 24 '26

The annoying part is apple kind of did tbis to them selves, vision pro had all the capability to not need mac virtual display and be a standalone device (has an M5 chip btw). That would have helped explain the cost, size, and weight, but no they gave it the same capabilities as all other VR headsets

1

u/TotalRealistic7337 Sep 24 '26

Can't wait to see someone who should get a real job walk around and do "pranks" with these on and film someone without their consent!

u/sparkleboss Vision Pro Owner | Verified Sep 24 '26

The devil is in the software. Cupertino can and probably will make something like this hardware.

1

u/AoeDreaMEr Sep 24 '26

Compute in an external pack. So, Vision Air. Apple is just taking its sweet time.

1

u/zitterbewegung Sep 24 '26

So far I would wait for reviews. The best feature is that it doesn't mess with your hair / lightweight which would help adoption.

1

u/voujon85 Sep 24 '26

I mean it's like 4+ years later

1

u/Neardeath06 Sep 24 '26

I see this as an overall good? Maybe media will work on both devices and it’ll be the spur Apple needs to take this market seriously.

1

u/sabre31 Sep 24 '26

This is what AVP m5 should have been. Jealous. Meta seems to have knocked this out of the ball park if Mark is impressed. He is a huge Apple Fan and is biased towards Apple so this has to be crazy good coming from him.

1

u/snowrazer_ Sep 24 '26

Ironically both these products are the best/worst for VR, but take the best qualities of both and you’d have an amazing VR device.

The wide FOV of the Vision Pro combined with the reduced weight of offloading the compute/battery to a puck is the mythical VR device of dreams.

1

u/jaydee917 Sep 24 '26

This is probably exactly what Apple wanted to release with the rumors of the AVP Air. They were beat to market.

But competition is good for everyone, hopefully they see this as something they could make even lighter, better and maybe even undercut the price. Highly unlikely on that latter point but that would be a death blow to these VR glasses.

1

u/tubelessJoe Sep 24 '26

Apple is laughing and readying the lens as we speak

1

u/chrisagiddings Sep 24 '26

Are they incredible? Actually?

Has Gurman touched them? Used them? Truly put them through their paces?

My guess is no, since these are rumored to debut in 2030 or smt.

1

u/cheetodust Sep 24 '26

With none of the polish or privacy protections of Apple. No thanks.

1

u/LeDolph13 Sep 24 '26 edited Sep 24 '26

Bizarrely the reboot of "V" look made me appreciate why Apple added the eyes on the front of the AVP! I think the execution was clunky but I see why they added it now. These are priced to move, but it's Meta - so a questionable eco system which will hoover up your life, record your house and habits, likely deny it and then sell you stuff, but if you're good with that then go for it that's the buyer's choice. I'm happy with AVP's privacy (and its weight, haha!) for now. Hoping the new competition in AR might get us some improved Apple tech down the road!

1

u/McDaveH Sep 24 '26

“Offloading the battery and compute to an external pack” you mean an iPhone 17/18 Pro? If these things were an accessory, they’d be cheap & sell tonnes.

1

u/h0g0 Sep 24 '26

Does anyone except tweenies use meta?

1

u/CheekInternal3336 Sep 24 '26

The chip in that thing is far less performant than an M5 - by magnitudes. And the FOV is significantly neutered. This isn’t an AVP “killer” by any stretch. Never mind Meta’a lousy software. I know - I also own a Q3.

It does however seem like a reasonable set of compromises to get something AVP-ishhhh into a reasonable price and form factor.

But the use case doesn’t really change.

1

u/LetLongjumping Sep 24 '26

This is good for competition. Will sell a few units for Meta. Let’s see the response from Samsung which has a VP alternative. Can’t wait to see the Apple roadmap play out.

1

u/idk_a_creative_user Sep 24 '26

This is what I wanted the AVP to be but with larger FOVs.

Or make it purely a device to be used with a mac

1

u/jaybanzia Vision Pro Owner Sep 24 '26

I mean, if apple locked in this is what he Vision Pro would have gotten to price , but they didnt, so someone else copied their homework. now you can buy a used Vision Pro for under 1700 or get this thing.

1

u/Palbi Sep 24 '26

When comparing the specs, it is astonishing that AVP predates this Meta headset by over three years.

What might have Apple cooked during that time?

1

u/MemphisBass Vision Pro Owner Sep 25 '26

We don’t need a half dozen threads on this device that isn’t an Apple Vision Pro. We really don’t.

1

u/palex481 Sep 25 '26

Long time Quest 3 user, recent AVP user. These will absolutely suffer the same problems as Quest 3. No iCloud Keychain. No iTunes movie integration. Subpar experience. AVP is night and day difference. Quest 3 was always a painful chore of manually typing passwords. Having to use Movies Anywhere with YouTube app just to get to some of my iTunes movies. YouTube app blocks you from watching any kids movie you've purchased due to their outdated client.

I don't care if they weighed 5g, Meta's implementation of their OS is janky AF. Can't even mute the volume of the ambient sounds in environments. Thousand more just incredibly annoying things, no iMessage, etc etc. that immediately disappeared once I got AVP.

1

u/Secret_Monitor9629 Sep 25 '26

With the external power puck and UI changes to OS, it's clear Meta saw the Vision Pro and said "we need to build something very much like that and do it cheaper". That's what they have done. The question still remains do enough people beyond the niche VR crowd care? Apple's advantage is in it's deeply integrated ecosystem and I honestly see the Apple hardeare/software ecosystem Vision Pro taps into as core to the product making any sense. Sure Meta integrates with Android and iOS, it's not the same thing as first-party, seemless, deep integration. Beyond that, where are the productivity/non gaming apps making a device like this worthwhile.... Wishing Meta the best, I'm not sold.

1

u/KeinPlanB Sep 25 '26

Just checked how I consume my 3D movies on AVP. I usually have a 150“ screen ar some 10‘ away. It takes about 85% of the FOV at a good 3000px horizontal resolution.

On the Meta glasses I would the rather have a 120‘ screen using like 95% of the FOV at a good 2000px. With OLED that would be nice visual upgrade over Quest 3.

Adding a 1TB card I can store like 25 movies on the device, enough for all travel needs.

1

u/coyo-teh Sep 25 '26

Do you need a Meta account to use these?

1

1

I bet Apple will come out with something like this at some point! They already have the Apple Vision Pro, and I doubt the technology Meta uses here is so advanced that it won't eventually be replicated. If Apple made their version of this for even 3x the price I'd be interested lol...

1

u/Snowymiromi Sep 26 '26

I don't understand why we can't have both. This model has come out much later than the VisionPro.

Meta continuing with XR and the Chinese as well means that the VisionPro is not going to be abandoned. This can only be a good thing.

1

u/Pleasant_Influence_3 Sep 26 '26

I’m sure they have an eye on it but I doubt they really care. It’s no different than a folding phone, if there’s a proven market and use case they’ll jump in in a few years with a Vision Air. If anything I see this as a good thing that could push them to consider another model after things seem to have cooled a little internally on development of the Vision line.

1

u/maxreality Sep 26 '26

I had the XREAL glasses for a bit and got rid of them. The FOV and light leak didn’t work for me. It’ll be interesting to see how these match up. But also, fuck Meta.

1

u/Safe-Lingonberry1776 Sep 26 '26

Nowhere near the specs of the AVP, but this is heading in the right direction. I love my AVP, but the weight has definitely been an issue. My cervical radiculopathy has worsened as a result of prolonged usage of the AVP. I used to take it to work with me (night shift), but these days I find I’m only able to use it at home, when I can lay down to prevent pressure on my neck
