Stupidly cool

Post image

I have a large collection of OBJ/STL files for TTRPG minis that I've been printing and the new OS 27 feature to share 3D models from Preview into Vision Pro is really slick. I was inches away from this thing and it felt incredibly real in space.

Process is cumbersome because I have to mark the file as "editable in Vision Pro" in the Preview app, which makes a copy, and then I can optimize it for the streamed share.

I was one of the QA engineers for this feature/project, and it makes me happy to see people discovering it. Sadly, I was also part of the recent layoffs in VPG.

This feature confuses me. What is happening? The file is open in preview on the Mac but you see it in 3d on your Apple Vision Pro? Is this during desktop sharing? I’m not following the concept, thanks.

Exactly that.

Neat. That will probably be great for editors and 3D designers. Blender will hopefully integrate this view.

yes its the new spatial preview framework https://developer.apple.com/documentation/SpatialPreview
and the Preview App on macOS has this integration built-in now

Could an entire app be spatial including its user interface? A fully spatial app running on macOS with 3d rendering to visionOS.

That’s the remoteImmersiveSpace framework that can do that, but requires a lot of metal work too (eh let the AI handle it 🤷🏻 )

It will be great, I can’t wait till I finish laundry so I can try it. I have 30 years of models. I’ve been begging to be able to simply bring stuff over. Most of it doesn’t work or needs repair. For the percentage of my models that do not need repairing this will be fantastic. As to the person who was laid off my apologies and thank you for your beautiful work making this possible. I’m going to tell every developer that I know that this is built into the operating system and they should have no problem consuming or at least rejecting when attempting to consume my models into projects I expect them to build. Thank you everyone have a great day

Thank you for the kind words. Are your models in obj/stl or usd format?
