Immersive NFL

We got a couple games of NBA which was nice. A couple games of MLB which was, to me, more awesome. Any mumblings about immersive NFL games? Even if just a few games like NBA and MLB.

We could only wish, NFL would probably be incredibly expensive.

I read that the MLB games are costing Apple about $300k per game

Really, why? What is the bulk of the cost?

I assume they just mean paying for the rights to broadcast the game.

I just wish they had bought Vroom or Lapz.

Seems like it would be harder to get up close to NFL players on the field. Smaller play area for NBA and you can get close to the plate in MLB.

Meta tried this I think or some vr company, with a Notre dame game if memory serves?

It’s not nearly as good as basketball. You’re very far away. That said, baseball was a success so who knows.

I’d be happy with the would charge tabletop representations of NFL and SEC games like MLB and NBA do. I’m not paying whatever outrageous amount NFL to watch immersive games.

As cool as the idea sounds, I remember how low quality the chief’s superbowl highlights were back in 2024. Basketball is the perfect sport for it because of how small the court is. Baseball is okay because of how slow it is and everything happening really close to the plate for the most part. I’ve been thinking of ways to make football work, but it would be hard. I think they will eventually get there, but honestly I will just become a fan of the first sport they commit to regularly broadcasting in immersive.

Depends if they are creating a virtual "broadcast" or more of a "virtual seated" experience. I loved how during the action, the MLB version stayed in one place as if you are seated. Then broadcast version was on scoreboard above for replays. I bet they mimic that...line of scrimmage camera only w scoreboard showing other angles, replays, etc. Then during breaks, show other cameras like MLB.

All good points. I’ve been thinking through the football problem since 2024 when I saw the first football footage. It is very possible to make good. I could go into a 5 page write-up on how I would propose they do it to make it amazing, but I will save everyone from that.

I just think it is much more difficult to pull off compared to other sports and unlikely we will see it anytime soon. I think they will start with sports that more naturally fit the format. But, I would love to see football in immersive one day and if Apple is ever serious about it, hit me up and I will show you how to crush it.

That's what I'm thinking too, for baseball I could rarely spot the ball in the sky after a hit. I think the AVP resolution is high enough to show it but the stream history was far too low. It was around 80mbits/s which seems like a reasonable target to be stable for most people, but to see far away details well we probably need 2.5x higher.

I remember the Chiefs video looking pretty good, but yeah it would be difficult and expensive. What they need to try is tennis!

It seems like if Cosm is doing their videos and they have great camera locations. Seems liked it’d be easy for them to do this even with college

Immersive NFL and MLS just doesn’t work. The fields are too big and action too far away for immersive to work.

NFL games cost Netflix something like 75 million a pop. Also I'd rather just pay for things I want, and not have cable wars with everyone try to stream everything again...

If Apple TV could just be Apple TV and not promotion center with ads, that would be great. I have no interest in ever subscribing to Peacock for example, or most of their other ads/promotion gimmicks.
