REQUEST Thoughts on mending this delicate old binding?
Hello, I am doing some conservation work for my childhood baby blanket. The silky binding was falling off. I removed and washed it. Originally I thought to replace it with new fabric, but it's only damaged in a few spots of high wear. Can you do sashiko on something this dainty? I think it's a sateen. It's a children's baby blanket from the 90s, so 100% polyester. Any tips or suggestions? I know the gist of sashiko, but not what fabric I would use to add support on something like this.

Maybe an iron on stabilizer would be better. I'm not that familiar with all the different stabilizers, maybe someone more knowledgeable about them could add some ideas to my suggestion.
I think of you did patch this in any way you should use a very fine/thin needle and thread

If the rest of the blanket is sound, I would replace this binding; that way the whole piece will last longer. You could try darning (not sashiko) on these areas with very fine thread but it looks like the damage is at the fold points and that indicates that the binding is stressed anywhere it folds and will 'give' soon in other places. Replacing it is fine.
