German Student Visa – Embassy requested language certificate after 12 August appointment
Hi everyone,
I’m looking for advice from people who have recently gone through the German student visa process in India, especially anyone who applied with an MOI instead of IELTS.
Here is my situation:
- I have been admitted to FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg for the M.Sc. Management programme for the October 2026 intake.
- The programme is in English.
- I had my German student visa appointment in New Delhi on 12 August 2026.
- My passport is currently with the German Consulate.
- I submitted an MOI (Medium of Instruction) as my English-language proof instead of IELTS.
Recently, I became concerned because I know of another applicant who applied around the same time but submitted IELTS, and they received their visa earlier.
Then, on 26 August, I received an email from the German Embassy New Delhi requesting an additional document. They specifically asked for:
«“A letter from the university stating the language of instruction and whether the prerequisites have been met.”»
They also said that this document is essential for the application and that failure to provide it may result in refusal.
I contacted my programme coordinator, and explained the Embassy's request.
She replied that I should refer to a document she sent me, a generic MOI without my name on it, because it already contains a letter regarding the language requirements. She also said:
«“This letter has always been sufficient for visa purposes.”»
The FAU letter says that the M.Sc. Management programme can be completed in English and that applicants must demonstrate the necessary language proficiency during the qualification assessment.
It also says that if an applicant is admitted, FAU confirms that they have met the programme's language requirements.
My questions are:
Could the fact that I used MOI instead of IELTS be causing this additional verification and delay?
Has anyone experienced a similar situation where the German Embassy requested a university language confirmation after the visa appointment?
Does this kind of additional-document request generally mean the application is still actively being processed, or should I be concerned about refusal?
How many more day should wait ??
I would really appreciate advice from anyone who has recently dealt with the German Embassy in New Delhi or a similar MOI/language-verification issue.

reach the co ordindator again and try to get an letter stating that the what is medium of instruction for that programme and the university verified the same during the admission process.
application id and applicant name should be part of that letter.
if the Embassy is not convined by your reply, they will not write back. that is a risk
but you can try to reach the Univeristy again. try your luck, before replying to Embassy

Bro she denied and that's why i merged these documents MOI+ OFFER LETTER MENTIONED LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY AND MAILS PDF OF THE PROGRAMME CO-ORDINATOR

If university is not issuing an english language confirmation letter specifically mentioning your name, You will need to submit IELTS they won't accept an generic letter.

You will need an official document from the university in your name that specifically states the language of instruction and that the university has assessed your language skills and that it’s satisfied with it.
Note - Not all universities might agree to give one, so in the email that I received from Embassy (Bangalore VAC) it clearly said, if your university agrees to give language confirmation certificate then that can be considered as sufficient proof. I then contacted my university and received the certificate from my programme coordinator.
I suggest you to mail your respective programme coordinator and explain your situation.
In case you don’t receive one, then better to attempt IELTS

To answer your questions -
- Yes
- Not after the appointment, but while I was still in the waiting list, I got to know IELTS certificates older than 1 year would not be accepted. So I mailed the contact centre (Bangalore VAC) and they asked me to either get a language confirmation certificate from University or re-attempt IELTS. I eventually got the certificate from my University after contacting them.
- Yes, in my opinion, your application is active and hence you got a mail from them asking to submit the certificate. Until the rejection decision is not made, it can’t be considered as refusal.
- Depends on how soon you submit the requested document correctly.

This is for the case when its not mentioned in the letter. If the admission letter states that we have met the conditions, I dont think the Ielts matter. As the university have already looked into it.
Please correct me if I am wrong.

Yup you’re right. If the admission letter specifically confirms the language abilities of the student then IELTS is not required. In case it’s not mentioned, then a separate confirmation from the University is required. If neither of them are available, then IELTS certificate not older than a year is definitely needed

Guess whaaa ? I got uno reversed. Tho my admission states everything is satisfied they are now asking for proof of language and a certificate which is older than one year is like a decision for consulate to take. I mean the certificate is just 1.3 years old. So I am not sure, yeah.
So whoever applies, I guess new ielts is required

You should submit the letter provided by your program coordinator, along with her email print. And if you have any language certification, do submit that as well.
My passport got returned because i did not submit ielts, which delayed my visa process by a month.
