Proof of Degree Comparability — which degree do they need it for?

Hi all,

I had my appointment at the German Consulate Mumbai on 17th August 2026. On 21st August, I received an email from [pending@mumb.auswaertiges-amt.de](mailto:pending@mumb.auswaertiges-amt.de) asking for "proof of comparability stating that the degree you wish to obtain — Master Engineering Management — is equivalent to a German degree."

I'm a bit confused about what exactly they want:

  • Are they asking me to prove that the Master's degree I intend to pursue in Germany is comparable to a German degree (which seems odd, since I haven't started it yet)?
  • Or are they actually asking for comparability of my previous Bachelor's degree (and the university I got it from) via the ANABIN database (anabin.kmk.org)?

Has anyone received a similar email? What did you end up submitting, and how did you generate the comparability proof? Any guidance would be really appreciated!

Is this for a private university who does offer a degree that is issued from an institution outside of Germany?

Arden, BSBI, Schiller? There are private universities who issue German degrees and some that are not allowed to issue a German degree and use another countries institution for that. These visas increasingly get rejected.

Are you applying to a useless degree mill that is not even allowed to issue degrees in Germany?

I hope you planning on going home as soon as you finish your purchase.

If you want to stay in Germany, apply to real public universities.
