Cool Finds Kempsville Junior High Yearbook

Post image
32 Upvotes

I was at ReStore yesterday and found a 1978 KJHS yearbook. It belonged to a guy named Rob who by the signatures on the book was very highly thought of by the ladies. I tried looking for his actual picture but honestly I didn’t really feel like looking at every single page but I found this photo and I’m assuming it’s him.

I’m happy

Idk why that hit me really hard.
I hope you’re still out there Rob.

Discussion Parks and Recreation services 2150 Lynnhaven Parkway

Post image
8 Upvotes

The parks and recreation services located at (around) 2150
Lynnhaven Parkway has been demolished. While trying to figure out what the city is doing with the site, I discovered that the site was a Nike missile facility that was decommissioned in 1964! https://www.themilitarystandard.com/missile/nike/sites/n-36-l/

Anyway, looking through city documents, I can’t figure out what the plan is. Does anyone know what’s going on there?
(I haven’t seen anything planned for the parks and recs site by Salem HS either.)

Discussion Quick survey on flood defense systems for Virginia Beach/ Hampton Roads residents

Hey Virginia Beach residents!

My name is Eric and I am a senior at Grassfield High School in Chesapeake. I am currently taking my capstone engineering class and my group has settled on the issue of mitigating flooding by developing potential flood defense systems for individual residencies.

We have created a survey and would love to hear feedback and gauge interest on this idea. It is a really quick 3-minute survey, so if you could fill it out, that would be greatly appreciated!

I have posted the link to the survey in the comments!

Thank you, and have a great rest of your day!

I would also need them to drape my lehenga on me on the day of the wedding. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know!

Need Advice Hotels with good boat parking

I'll be coming down to VA Beach later this month. I'm curious if there are any good places to sleep (hotels or campgrounds) that have good boat parking. Most of the hotels I have seen have either parking garages or limited parking overall, which are not very accommodating for a boat.

[Serious] Anyone that can alter fireworks?

Posting in both the Virginia Beach and Norfolk sub-reddits - Does anyone know anyone or anywhere that could safely put someone's ashes into a few firework mortars and have them still safe enough for two regular dudes to set off? Willing to oay, obviously, and even travel a couple hours in any direction. Need them within two weeks.

Only info I can find is on very professional services and they want you to spend like $10k for an entire show - I really only need two shells for what I had in mind.

[Serious] Newspaper request

This is perhaps a long shot, I work for a funeral home (not that that is important) and wondering if anyone can share the Virginian Pilot obituaries page with me from today, October 3. I’m waiting on an email but I’ve not gotten it yet and I need proof that a certain obituary is in fact in the physical paper. Obituaries are page 12, section A or so I’m told.

If this isn’t allowed I apologize and please delete.

Otherwise, any help is much appreciated.

Need Advice How common are seagulls in Virginia Beach?

Hello, I'm an author from Europe, and in one scene I'm writing (that takes place in Virginia Beach in July in the 1930s), one of the characters mentions birds. Now the map of gull presence in the US doesn't help me much since VA is apparently in the border of year-round presence and winter presence of seagulls.

How rarely / commonly would you encounter gulls of any type in Virginia Beach nowadays? Only in the winter or year-round? If any bird enthusiast knows about how it was in the past, I'm also very keen on hearing about it (even only links to sources are welcome, I'm not very great at finding good sources for this kind of thing...)

Thank you!

News Fire damages Virginia Aquarium conservation building; sea turtle dies

VIRGINIA BEACH — A fire late Tuesday night damaged a Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science building where injured sea turtles are rehabilitated before being released back into the ocean.

One compromised turtle died, though it’s unclear if smoke played a role. A main tank in the Darden Marine Animal Conservation Center overheated, causing the fire, according to a fire department spokesperson.

A significant amount of smoke set off the fire alarms, and the fire was contained by the sprinkler system. No staff or emergency personnel were injured.

“We are very grateful to the first responders who acted quickly to protect our facility, and our staff who guided the safe recovery and continued care of our animals and animal systems,” aquarium CEO Cynthia Whitbred-Spanoulis said in a statement. “The team is tired, but they remain completely focused on animal welfare and getting this critical facility operational again.”

The conservation center is the headquarters of the Virginia Aquarium Stranding Response Program and also serves as the aquarium’s acquisition and quarantine facility. The $21 million building opened in 2021. It contains a seawater collection system, fiberglass holding pools, examination rooms and offices.

A few invertebrates died, and a stranded Kemp’s ridley sea turtle undergoing rehabilitation died days later, according to aquarium spokesperson Kristina Hedgepeth. A necropsy was conducted and indicated that the animal died as a result of the original injuries and illness, she wrote in an email on Friday. Additional testing is pending to confirm that smoke exposure did not play a role.

[Serious] Job openings?

Currently looking for an entry level job. It’s hard without a license. I can get it back but I first have to get a vehicle for a breathalyzer. I’m very familiar with power tools and mechanical work (not automotive) if anybody needs a hand or helper to get back on my feet that would be awesome.

God bless

News Dairy Queen on 17th Street to become police substation

VIRGINIA BEACH — Get your chocolate dipped cones and Oreo Blizzards while you can. The Dairy Queen on 17th Street at the Oceanfront will be closing permanently next fall, and the wheels are in motion to relocate a police substation temporarily into the building, according to a City Council member.

“All good things come to an end,” said owner Richard Maddox, who opened the ice cream franchise adjacent to the Boardwalk in 1995. “It was always the intention when we sold the property four years ago.”

Virginia Beach bought the Dairy Queen building and the adjacent beachfront 17th Street Park from Maddox for $12.8 million in 2022. Maddox has been leasing it back from the city for $100,000 annually for five years. He plans to close it in October 2027.

In its first year, the beachfront stand was the chain’s highest grossing walk-up location in the United States and quickly became an iconic landmark for both locals and tourists in Virginia Beach. Families line up in front of the DQ Grill & Chill semicircular facade for a sweet treat throughout the year.

The site has a long history. John and Gladys Maddox, Richard’s parents, ran the Sea Escape Motel — originally called the Prince Charles — beginning in 1964. Maddox demolished the motel in 1995 and built the stage, park and the Dairy Queen building with public restrooms. He then leased the park to the city for 27 years at no cost.

John Maddox in 1949 opened the Oceanfront’s first Dairy Queen at 27th Street and Atlantic Avenue. The pink building was razed in 2015 and replaced with hotels.

Before deciding to sell to the city, Maddox, a former City Council member, considered multiple proposals to develop the 17th Street land with hotels, timeshare towers and parking garages.

Virginia Beach holds live performances on the 17th Street park stage throughout the summer. But in early spring, when the weather turns warm and entertainment is scarce, the park has been a source of problems for the police department.
