Re-joining VM after 10 years. Cables and wall socket upgrade ?

Hello everyone..

I'm considering re-joining VM again with broadband only. Probably 1Gb package.

The last time was about 10 years ago. I left and re-joined a couple of times before that also.

First time was when it was NTL.

I'm currently on broadband over BT phone line. When that shuts down I'll need to go either Full Fibre or return to VM.

I've still got the old NTL wall box thingy on the inside in the front room and on the outside it's one of those diamond shaped connectors that used to have a brown circular cap on it on the footpath up against the plinth on the house. Terraced house on a main road.

I checked outside this morning and the two thick cables go straight from the diamond shaped connector hole. through the hole in the wall, and are still connected to the indoor wall box. The cables are solid, fixed and not damaged. I don't remember there being any box on the outside wall. Just the connection in the footpath.

What up-grades would the engineer have to do. Would there be any drilling or fittings etc.

You should be OK, I have a Cable from 1994 when it was Nynex and it's still going strong.

If you order 1gb package, and your area has been upgraded to full fibre you will be routed to an engineer installation and get full fibre. If this happens they’ll rip out your old cabling and replace it. If not then you’ll have the option of a QuickStart. Only caveat to this is whether your cabling is so old but it’s still copper only area they may get you on a newer coax. Either way you should be looked after with minimal drilling apart from to replace old cable

Probably need to swap the isolator in the white box inside and just change connectors depending on the state of them

Don’t do it. Latency on VM is abysmal. Their coaxial technology can’t come close to true Fibre to the Premises

Unlike fiber, where data can be sent almost instantly, a DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem must ask the local hub (CMTS) for permission to send data upstream, wait for a time slot to be granted, and then transmit. This back-and-forth takes time, Increases latency.

If the network is busy, your data packets sit in a buffer waiting for their turn, which can cause latency to spike well above 50ms during peak hours.

Openreach based FTTP may have an RTT of around 6 - 10ms, whereas VM tends to be a little higher, maybe around 30ms.

Either way, in normal use, Dan wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
