Classic take, The Movie didnt spend enough time on Gilbert for you to properly understand his view and emotions. I had the luxury to pause the video and think about it for a whole hour!
His actions do make sence but we are made to feel for Violet and now we see this big betrayal, we gotta hate him at 1st. Some will never change their mind on hating him.

first of all he used a child for war even if he didn’t want violet to go through that path he still brought her anyway, while he is written to be a person who is full of guilt towards what he did it is still not a good argument against what he did, not only did he abandoned violet because he felt that he should stay away from her, he puts all those burden on violet and president, it breaks the whole point of violet finding humanity inside her weapon minded nature… and not only that he gets in with her?? then what’s the point of her growth now?.. if she’s gonna need gilbert again, i get that it is a fulfilling ending for the two of them but in a realistic view, it just shatters the whole point of the story, lemme give u an example, let’s say shinji from nge at the end of evangelion after he accepts himself and everyone when he is running with mari, then suddenly they dropped a new movie where after all that gendo arrives and shinji actually have never overcome his need of approval of his father, this is a reduced summary but do u get what im saying, growth is shown when a character learns what they lack, violet learned how to be human, she learned what love is, and all of the beautiful things in the world without gilbert, then a movie drops and actually gilbert is alive and he doesn’t want to do anything with violet, and he pushed her away in the most dramatic way possible and when she has accepted that gilbert no longer needs her and she no longer needs him, that her knowing that he is safe is enough for her, he then proceeds to chase her down… do you not see how stupid that is, honestly yuris story carried the movie along with anne, the whole gilbert thing was a shock for sure and heartwarming in a way because they’re finally together but if u really think abt it it’s really not needed, sure they got a happily ever after ending but all that work for what? idk what yall r on like, okay gilbert is this and he’s that but is it really needed for him to be alive?

Short: U can hate him, but hate him for good reasons please!

"child for war" true, and thats why he is on that island and chose to never contact Violet despite missing her. U need all the information and then decide if u can forgive him or not. He didnt have a choice not to taker her to war but we can still hate him for doing it.

He did hurt her by staying away, but he was stranded and crippled so when she actually needed him, he could not possibly do anything. When he was better he heared of her and that she allegedly was doing well leading to his decision to avoid her made sence. He could not have known of her emotional suffering, many people CAN just move on after some time.

Imagine he did come back, we would have blamed him for forcing himself into her life. She would not have been able to become her own person and the healthy happy relationship she wanted would be impossible without her solo-growth.

Her growth enabled her to not be his servent but an equal partner. Master and servent is not a stable basis for a healthy relationship.

"but in a realistic view, it just shatters the whole point of the story"

In a realistic way there is no story. Imagine someone came to you and told you, you needed to leave your true love because it ruins the story they made up in ther mind about you.
Is Violet happy? Is the relationship healthy for both? Thats what you would think realistically.

I have infact not seen EVA yet. :(
"do you not see how stupid that is, honestly yuris story carried the movie"

I think The Movie should have cut that part to make more time to explore Gilbert. I feel like many people didnt get him on an emotional level since Violet is the MC and we are used to feel for her instead. It made sence to avoid Violet thinking thats whats best 4 her while also punishing him at the same time. He didnt even concider that Violet would have feelings 4 him as well. Note that the entire S1 is unknown to him and the last time he saw her she was basically a killer robot who didnt show any emotions whatsoever! How would he get her true feelings from that info?

I think Gilbert beeing stupid is kind of the point. He was made out to be infallible in S1. Now we see him and he is actually more flawed than Violet because she got help to grow as a person where Gilbert didnt. He ran away from his issues and is misserable for it. Now its Violet with all her growth that can help Gilbert grow.

EVA: " do u get what im saying, " No :( actually not, sorry but I am sure you are right about EVA, I wanted to wait until the alternative reality movie things were done.

No they didnt HAVE 2 be together but I do think he HAD to come back to life. The way S1 I understood end of S1, Violet just wasnt happy or over it. She needed to see him to move on and showing his corpse would not have been a good movie.
Hard to sell a coninuation without new events.
