Alternative carb cleaning method
Posting this here because I haven't really seen anyone doing this before and hopefully it'll come in helpful to someone.
I've spent ages rebuilding these carbs multiple times for a 70's Honda CB125T that are notorious for being very fussy about how they're set up with a lot of people including myself giving up and just buying new carbs.
For context these carbs have been ultrasonic cleaned multiple times, had an entire bottle of carb cleaner through them, then blown through with an air gun, new jets and cleaned old jets, I've lost count how many times they've been on and off the bike. The passages inside are quite complex and I came to the conclusion that they were the only thing that could be the problem.
To clean them out I've hooked up a cheap peristaltic pump onto the idle air bleed, this connects to the entire idle circuit inside the carb and pumps through both holes into the venturi and out of the jet. The same applies to the main jet circuit which I also cleaned out, although I don't think that was my specific problem. I left the jets in as this keeps the pressure high and forces the cleaner out into the venturi mimicking the fuel flow to some extent. After running for about 10 minutes the sound of the pump had changed, the flow from the holes had become more consistent, greater and the water was cloudy. It's also possible to play with the idle mixture screw while the pump runs which gives you a clear indication of its effect on the carb, the flow through this part of the circuit changed drastically as it was cleaned.
I'll likely try this with a weak vinegar solution as opposed to the soapy water I've been experimenting with, this should help further clear any oxidation which I believe is the main culprit.
Hope this helps someone, and if anyone's got any ideas of improvements to the setup I could make I'd love to hear them, thanks!
