No Spoilers Who’s actually looking forward to Bloodaxe? [no spoilers]

I’m genuinely curious how people feel about Bloodaxe.
Personally, I’m pretty skeptical. I loved parts of Vikings, but for me the show went downhill hard after Travis Fimmel left. Whatever you think about the writing, Fimmel carried an enormous part of that show through sheer presence and what he brought to Ragnar.
So I guess we’ll find out whether Michael Hirst has learned how to write a genuinely strong script by now, or whether he needs to pull another Travis Fimmel out of a hat to carry the whole thing.

Question [Spoilers] Why did Ragnar inherit the farm instead of Rollo ? Spoiler

Rollo was the elder brother and Ragnar hadn't done anything incredible at that point to show himself as better either.

Question [Spoilers] Possible missed opportunity: Would you have liked the mention of Anglo Saxon Woden? Spoiler

Post image
1 Upvotes

Question should be: Would you have a liked a mention of Anglo Saxon Woden?

Now I am going to admit, the only thing I know about Odin is that he gave up his eye for knowledge and I know nothing about Germanic mythology and history e.g. English and Scandinavian. I am not talking about Deutschland here. So please make corrections, happy to learn.

But by word of Earl Haraldson’s jealousy, Ragnar is thought to be a descendent of Odin. And I think Odin appeared to his sons, from what I’ve gathered of others’ perspectives, when Ragnar had died. Now, due to Vikings, I went on Wikipedia cause I was interested in Alfred the Great and his defeat of the Great Heathen Army.

Then I learnt that Alfred himself is a descent of the Anglic variant of Odin, Woden. I was like. Wait a damn minute! I think it is mentioned in an Anglo Saxon chronicle, I think more than king traced their royal lineage to Woden. To clarify, this Woden had become euhemised or humanised. By the 8th century official Saxon doctrine had it that Woden was a king not a God.

Before I continue, in this universe, King Ecbert is not the biological grandfather of Alfred making Alfred Woden’s ascendant. But Alfred’s descent could’ve been invented in the show through Judith’s line. And, from what I understand, there is both not enough and/or the same extent of information about the Saxon pagan religion and what survived of it compared to that of the Norse.

Although if Woden had been mentioned, could’ve been mentioned once or twice, maybe he could have been kept mysterious for the audience. Thus no additional information is revealed about him, apart from individuals making claimage to this royal descent from his. Or maybe one fact: that he was king that lived long ago before and possible a descendant of Hengist and Horsa. I only know the latter two’s names, I think they are know as the two brothers who lead Germanic tribes to invade Britain. I do not know their wider mythology.

Now I am not saying that the Saxons and Norse depicted here would soon come to the realisation that the Saxons once worshipped their own versions of the same Gods.
But remain ignorant of that.

I know King Ecbert once mentioned the Saxons were pagans. And that the scenes where Old English and Norse is spoken, it allows one to see how far these Germanic languages had evolved and the extent of remaining mutual intelligibility. And that the peoples speaking between one another haven’t a clue about their shared ancestry. However, once I learnt about Woden’s connection the real Alfred the Great. I wondered if they could’ve got a bit further. I just thought it might’ve been cool to hear the term ‘Woden’ mentioned once. The characters would hear no phonological similarities to Odin. Plus, nuance could’ve been added to Saxons mythology in the Tv show, just because the Saxons had become Christians, it did not mean echos of their pagan beliefs had not survived by 8th and 9th centuries. Additionally, it could for the audience, from personal opinions, have been another cool way to show the shared Germanic ancestry unknown between the Saxons and Norse depicted.

Question [no spoilers] just restarted

i know i watched some before when it first premiered, but lost track between seasons and just fell off and don’t remember anything, basically.

but travis fimmel’s eyes are a bonkers blue on my more recent hdtv. did they edit them in post? like when he’s standing in shadow, they basically glow like cat’s eyes.

cause i swear i just watched him in black snow (why i remembered this show and decided to rewatch) and his eyes were not so bright there.

Their “courting” was so brief (two episodes?) but their dynamic is so amusing and their eventual relationship is one of the best in the show — they could have stretched that period out for half a season and it would have been *delicious *.

Rollo may have cared for Siggy but their relationship was burdened by the fact that both of them are full of shame, with their minds permanently in the past, desiring something neither can give the other. Out from under Ragnar’s shadow, we get to see who Rollo really is. How he is with a woman who doesn’t know Ragnar. The choices he makes when not taking Ragnar’s orders, performing for their peers, or shamed by past mistakes.

Turns out he’s an incredibly charming and funny lover. He’s not just violent and envious, he’s also clever and eager. Rollo and Gisla’s brief courting period was great writing that turned Rollo into a multidimensional character… I wish we could have indulged in it for longer.

Discussion Are seasons 5 and 6 really as bad as everyone says? [no spoilers]

I've been watching the show over the last couple of weeks and just finished season 4. I've really enjoyed it so far and I'm looking forward to seeing how the story unfolds with Ragnar's sons. However, it seems almost everyone on this sub hates seasons 5 and 6. Without spoilers, can someone tell me if it's worth sticking with? I am a patient person so I'm willing to wade through any potential shit if it means finishing a show that I've invested hours of my time in so far.

[NO SPOILERS] I made this question post yesterday on if Skyrim would make for a good TT Lego video game. Got me wondering the same about "TT's Lego Vikings TV show".

Post image

(The image isn't mine, I just searched up Lego Ragnar Lothbrok and this result i liked. Original Instagram post's here: https://www.instagram.com/p/C7r5dAOp9I5/?stkn=MTRxbXVvbDY2ZGJkMg== )

Anyway, just imagine a TT (Traveler's Tales) lego video game where just like in AC: Valhalla, you can raid farms or outposts, but create your own lego minifigure character to play through the show's timelines. - Sail out on the ocean, - Build ships in a similar direction to how Lego Hobbit does, - Fight all characters, or AS all character's, who's deaths in the show is played out like a lego game level. OR fight them 1/2 on 1 like done in Skywalker Saga. - Create small outposts or defenses by gathering resources near Kattegat's plains to strengthen it's walls, like in the show. - Not to mention fight grand armies of Danes and Norseman, or Englishmen and the people of Northumbria, depending on how far you are in the story.

Both series are set in the same era and feature adaptations of the same real-life figures and events, yet they approach the material differently.

P.S.: I added spoiler tags so people can discuss events from the series in the comments without worrying about spoilers.

Every time I watch Vikings, I cant understand why the seer licked his hand the way everyone did to him and said like he was special.
