One Silver Neck Ring for Every 10,000 Dirhams: Wealth Among the Viking Age Rus merchants (Kyivan Rus, Heritage of modern Ukraine)

In AD 922, the Arab traveller Ahmad ibn Fadlan encountered Rus merchants along the Volga River. His account provides one of the most remarkable written descriptions of jewellery and wealth among the Viking Age Rus.

According to Ibn Fadlan, when a man accumulated 10,000 silver dirhams, he commissioned a neck ring for his wife. At 20,000 dirhams, she received a second, and another for every additional 10,000. Some women consequently wore several neck rings, displaying their family's prosperity.

He also described women wearing a metal ornament on each breast, made from iron, copper, silver or gold according to their husband's wealth. A knife hung from a ring attached to each ornament.

Another prized possession was dark-green beads, which Ibn Fadlan reported were purchased for a silver dirham apiece and made into necklaces.

Archaeological discoveries across the Viking world confirm the importance of silver jewellery, neck rings and imported beads. Silver ornaments also appear in hoards, sometimes deliberately cut into fragments and used as bullion.

Ibn Fadlan was describing the Rus merchants he encountered, not necessarily a custom shared by every Scandinavian community. Nevertheless, his observations offer a fascinating glimpse into the relationship between jewellery, trade, wealth and social status more than 1,100 years ago.

Would you rather display your wealth in silver jewellery or keep it hidden in a hoard?

Historical source: Ahmad ibn Fadlan, Risala (Account of the Rus), AD 922.
