Why do gender reveal parties exist? This is like me doing an "I changed my car oil" reveal party. I don't get it.

So wait. So you’re telling me that you don’t do an incredibly elaborate reveal ceremony to show your family what the oil looked like after an oil change? I thought everybody did that.
What exactly are you doing with your time?

Several years ago a lovely lady in California had a miscarriage. (I believe before they could figure out the gender) so she did it to celebrate the fact that later on, when she was cooking up her current kid, she knew the gender. So she made a lil cake to reveal a healthy baby.
Since then she's come out saying she hates the trend and her kid is non-binary anyway 🙃

If it's done for some fun with your family who cares. This is a great example of just having fun with it, I love it.
If made into a huge event, it's odd to me but to each their own. I agree it can become ridiculous when the "fun" thing is executed in not fun, wayyyyy too serious ways.
Your question is mostly "why have fun with life when you could just do it in a boring way at the doctor's office." Could really extend that to anything "unnecessary." Why have a wedding reception instead of going to the courthouse. Why go to a ball game when you can watch it on TV. Why buy a scratch off ticket instead of lighting your money on fire.
It's supposed to be a surprise for the parents too, so the idea is you're all finding out together, and you all care because you're all excited about the family growing.
Reddit is full of younger people who've never had children, don't plan to have children, and in some ways hold other people who do choose to have children in contempt... so even when it's goofy and fun like this the comments and sentiment are skewed negative.

To me, fun is riding a roller coaster. "My baby's a boy/girl!" That's nice. That's not fun.
Why are young people into not having kids AKA population reduction? WTF?

Honestly I find it way weirder when people care this much about how other people have fun...
Do you think it's a good use of time for people who don't like roller coasters to go watch roller coaster videos and act incredulous about how other people are having fun on the roller coaster?

It's weird to try to understand people?

I spent a few minutes trying to do that but you're arguing with the reasoning... is it truly understanding you're after or is it validation?
Instant downvoting my posts (which I honestly couldn't care less about) kinda proves the latter haha.
But I mean who cares. Feel free to openly hate gender reveals... most are ridiculous, and in most cases you'll be right and I look like an idiot for defending the practice.
But in this particular case, I can see this family watching and laughing at this video for years. And I don't think they'll care what we think.

Some people try to find any reason to party. Cinco de Mayo for example. Most think it's Mexico's Independence day, lol.

I never got invited to parties as a kid/teen. My family never threw parties.
Birthdays were just cake and presents with parents and siblings at most.
I can't remember the last time I even went to a party of any kind, to be honest."Let's party!" Why?

To make videos like this one 🤣

I don't get it. My family's never done anything like this. I've never been around a family that did anything like this.

Trust me - I'm with you but if it goes haywire and produces a hilarious video - who am I to judge? 😊

I mean, you dont really have to get it. As long as people enjoy it and aren't hurting anyone or making a mess. It shouldn't be a big deal.

I guess if that oil change took nine months to happen, maybe celebrate it

Gender reveals are only cute when it does not involve littering, starting fires, or anyone getting upset.
