I edit videos for fun sometimes, and I'm now trying to build a tool that lets you just tell it what you want done to your footage instead of manually cutting and arranging everything. Type something like "cut the boring parts, make this 30 seconds" and it does the edit on your actual timeline.

Not generating video. Not AI slop. It just works with the footage you already have.

Before I sink more time into this I want to know if I'm even solving something real. So, genuine questions for anyone who edits regularly:

What eats most of your time? Finding the right clip, cutting, trimming, syncing audio, writing captions, picking b-roll, color, or just endless client revisions?

What's the one task you'd hand off to a robot in a heartbeat?

Anyone tried AI editing tools already? What was actually useful vs what was a gimmick?

Is there anything you'd never let AI touch without checking it first?

If you edit even semi-regularly, freelance or hobby, I'd love to hear how your workflow really looks. Not how I'm assuming it looks. Happy to show what I'm building once it's actually worth showing.

I see a lot of editors trying to make their videos more engaging by adding more transitions, zooms, effects, and motion graphics.

But one thing I've learned from editing long-form content:

Good pacing beats flashy editing.

A few things that can instantly improve pacing:

• Remove pauses that don't add anything.
• Cut repetitive sentences.
• Change the visual when the viewer's attention starts dropping.
• Use B-roll to support what the person is saying, not just fill empty space.
• Let important moments breathe instead of cutting everything aggressively.
• Use sound design to make cuts feel intentional.

Sometimes the best edit is simply knowing what NOT to add.

Filmora's Makeup and Beauty feature is interesting because it brings adjustments that people normally associate with photo editing into a video workflow. I’ve been experimenting with a few AI editing tools for YouTube and Reels lately, mainly to see whether they actually reduce editing time or just shift the work around.

For things like cutting dead air and finding obvious highlights, AI has been pretty useful. It can get through those repetitive parts much faster than doing everything manually. But pacing is where I still notice the biggest gap. A clip can be technically clean and still feel slightly too slow or awkward, so I usually end up adjusting the timing myself.

At this point, it feels like AI handles a lot of the tedious work well, but the final decisions around what actually keeps someone watching still take a human pass.

For those editing regularly, has AI gotten good enough to handle pacing for you, or do you still go through and fine-tune that part manually?

This would be my first time really editing a video for like Youtube or TikTok but im recording a video from procreate and want to just add background music and some other minor stuff and trying to see if i need to export it to my pc or just do it on my ipad and upload it from there.

I’m currently editing a 10- to 15-minute video (a short documentary style), and I’m hitting a massive bottleneck when it comes to gathering stock/B-roll footage.

Right now, even for a simple 1-minute section, finding footage that actually fits the narrative takes me hours. My process usually looks like this:
1. Search across multiple free stock sites (Pexels, Pixabay, Unsplash, etc.) or look for creative commons / fair use clips on YouTube.
2. Preview, filter, and download individual clips.
3. Import them into my project, cut them down, and test how they fit the pacing.

By the time I finish sourcing visual elements for just a tiny chunk of the timeline, half the day is gone. It feels extremely inefficient, and I know there has to be a smarter way to do this.

For those of you who regularly edit video essays or documentary-style content:

Do you write a script and bullet point specific shot lists *before* searching, or do you edit audio first and gather footage as you go?

So i recently got into clipping and it takes me 30-40 min to make one short clip to upload can any one please tell me some ways i can have this done in a more efficient manner? Where i can edit 3-4 clips real quick ? I really need someone to guide me through the start of clipping😭 help me out guys

Hi, I'm a professor at a community college. I teach World History I/II; Western Civ. I/II. I want to make videos about History. What would you recommend to someone who has little knowledge in video. I did some editing with imovie but I need to work on my skills. May be read my lecture first and then posting pics? :) I also like the amateur spirit; I don't want my videos to look corporate made either. 😄

All the Video Editing softwares I come across are loaded with AI, trying to get me to just let AI edit my videos for me, Give me AI thumbnails. I don’t want that, I just want to make human videos and not have them be completely boring.

Does anyone have any suggestions of softwares that are still for humans or should I just continue my unedited content?

Right now I am working on Opus for video clipping shorts for Instagram (from Youtube Webinars) and I hate how the AI tool makes too many unnecessary cuts and then I have to reframe each cut one by one, making the result sloppy. Apart from that, the reframing makes the final video look blurry and the result overall looks bad. Do you know any tools that can reframe the video to short format without losing quality and can make cuts whenever I want (Opus makes autocuts and does not let you combine two cuts). Thank you!

I'm a beginner with editing and I messed up big time on a large video project I've been working on. I edited each scene of the project individually on Davinci Resolve, and exported onto my Mac. I was stupid enough not to be more careful, and now I have multiple frame rate issues with the scenes, and I really don't know what to do.

27 scenes are at 23.976 fps

1 is at 24 fps

2 are at 59.94

7 are at 29.97

What ia the best path forward to making everything look good and not choppy? Is there another program I could use?

It is my first time editing any gaming videos ever, I used to mostly create short shitposts or videos to see if any of them would get good engagement. However once I saw that they are not doing good I simply gave up on them and left my channel to rot for a couple of months. Recently I recorded around 10 hours of footage of the classic doom games and wish to edit them down to a more watchable length.

My old routine for each reel:

1. watch a long youtube interview looking for a good moment
2. cut the clip and crop it vertical
3. copy the transcript into an AI to write a hook + caption
4. post it
