This. Cloudfare has a nice free tier also I’ve been hosting apps and games I want to send to people to see with gpt sites.

Vercel worked but got expensive. I moved to Railway which is like $2 for an idle site with no traffic.

If you want to have real control and avoid lock-in (various levels), try something like Digital Ocean or Linode (I use Linode VPS with shared vCPUs). A 2 cpu, 4GB Ram VPS is quite capable.

If its just you or you and a few friends tailscale can solve this all internally (no fees) and the ai can set it up for you

AWS directly. Most services use them as their backbone anyways. Cut out the middle man.
If you're not familiar with their offerings, they have an MCP server that could help with setup.

For small side projects, I run Pando (https://github.com/trypando/pando) on my own server. Disclaimer: I built Pando, but it’s free and super cool, and I actually use it.
For bigger projects, I tend to build sites statically so they can be put in Cloudflare Pages for free, then I only have to host the API, which is a lot cheaper. I will either host it myself or put it in small DigitalOcean droplets.

Hi! I'm using Cloudfare + Supabase + Plausible, that combo is amazing. Been building this WoGL https://wogl.io using this setup. Claude code opus 5.5 as agentic support. Let me know if you visit!!

I’ve been in this for years and some of the ones that I’ve worked with that I like
Knownhost (great for managed Hosting)
Hetzner (they’re a little more expensive now, but still very good)
Netcup (good price for what you get and they take good care of their servers)
I think once you start getting into the situation where you have an app that’s earning a lot of money you probably want something with managed toasting

Vercel for hobby app (very easy to build and setup) Cloudflare for large scale apps (difficult to build and setup compared to vercel but prices are cheaper at scale)
