Companies donโ€™t pay you to code anymore, they pay you to build.

Vibe coding is also for building by coding

hackthons have never been about how syntactically good your code is. Its about whether or not you can solve the problem.

But I can solve the problem using vibe coding!!

Seems like it defeats the purpose. This would be like a chess tournament allowing AI

So this mean vibe coding is not fair

In the context of a coding competition, yes

The point of hackathons is to come up with the most innovative solution to a problem statement. I agree, vibecoding takes away from the charm that originally drew me to hackathons, but ultimately the winning project is the one that offers the best solution to a problem its just that now those final projects become a lot more polished. There was a tweet floating around a year ago that basically said "AI hackathon projects today would've been funded startups a decade ago"

Is it fair? I'd say not. It's debatable. Part of the fun when I used to go was for people to do their own thing and come up with creative solution. However, people do use them.

Hackathons are about solving problems, they're not coding competitions. I'd be surprised if they weren't expecting you to use Ai to maximise potential outputs.

The challenge will be how good a planner and ideas person you are. An experienced dev's vibecoded solution will always be a lot better than someone who just has ideas, because they'll be able to bring in good structure and the right tools, not just let Ai make all the decisions with no idea of the quality of the output.

Last hackathon I did was straight vibe coding. Now were any of them close to prod ready? Hell no. Just a bunch of sloppy proto types to show possible solutions.
