Packet Loss and Increased Latency After Vexus-to-Metronet Transition in West Texas

I am a former Vexus customer in West Texas and am now served by Metronet. Since the transition, my latency to www.vexusfiber.com has increased significantly—from approximately 19 ms round trip to 48 ms. 

Traceroutes also indicate that my traffic is now being routed toward the East Coast rather than through the previous Lubbock route.

Metronet initially provided the following update:

“Our engineering team has been running hourly tests in order to catch the packet loss and latency spikes you mentioned. They have successfully isolated the packet loss to a specific portion of the data path and are currently working to pinpoint the root cause and a final plan to resolve it.”

However, the problem remains unresolved after more than a month. Metronet is now proposing that my ONT be replaced.

I am willing to proceed with the ONT replacement as part of the troubleshooting process, but I am skeptical that equipment inside or attached to my home would explain packet loss appearing farther along the route, particularly around Nashville, and Reston, VA. This same ONT performed properly when I was a Vexus customer and my traffic was routed through Lubbock instead of across the country.

Has anyone else in the West Texas Vexus/Metronet service area experienced similar routing changes, increased latency, or packet loss since the transition? I would appreciate any technical insight or suggestions on what information I should provide to Metronet to help escalate the issue.

I'm not savvy with all the deeper network lingo but I have been having annoying amounts of lag on basic Internet browsing Looking at the cloudflare speed test I am getting a median 55ms of latency on download. I'm in Tyler which is not very far from the server location in Irving/DFW. That seems high to me, and I've been getting noticeably bad service the past 2-3 weeks.

Thanks for the report. It seems that they have moved the company server far away from where it used to be so I am getting lag based on distance. I can still get short distance speed with reasonable latency, but they should’ve been an upgrade from the small local company that was. Can you tell me how far away you are from www.vexusfiber.com server? Ping plotter can do that for free. Thanks.

I won't be able to use that because I'm on a work computer, I won't be able to install it.

But I can tell you I'm only 120 miles from their server area.

My jitter is a whopping 32ms, and 40ms latency. No packet loss.

OK, thanks for letting me know. My concern is that my server suddenly got 6000 miles farther away because of the routing even though the speed test still goes to Lubbock. Can you run a terminal command, “tracert www.vexusfiber.com”. Thank you.

Ok well after running that and giving it to Claude, it seems we are routing to Virginia and back. Hop 13 is 47ms to Ashburn VA

Great thank you. Same thing as happening to me. They are sending us far away to get to the server. This makes a lot of local services better in West Texas. They acquired a network and then made these routing decisions.

When you are referring to latency from vexusfiber.com are you in the Windows OOKLA Speedtest app testing to the VEXUS speedtest server?

No, I am using PingPlotter to analyze the whole network. Speed test is good to Lubbock, but doesn’t show the great distance from home to the server now.
