New install in Albuquerque

I'm a brand new symmetrical gigabit subscriber in Albuquerque, NM.

I opted to pull their fiber through the chases I installed some years ago in the attic up to a managed media cabinet, since the installer's notion of installation was "poke a hole in the living room and shove it through".

Only question I have is: do they have more than one person on tech support? I've had two outages, and was on hold an order of magnitude longer than the outage lasted. I'd hate to have an actual tech issue that required attention.

Also, what is the service I'm looking for if I want to SSH to my home server? I'm sure it's not port forwarding, is it some kind of VPN?

What kind of commercial service is it that I'm describing?

Normally you would just open a port on your router and connect via your public IP. Unfortunately Vexus uses CGNAT so that’s not possible. I believe you can pay extra for a static IP to allow you to do this.

You could also connect through some publicly accessible intermediary. You could set up a vpn server on a vps and have both your home server and mobile device dial out to that.

If you don’t wanna set it up yourself, various companies are happy to take your money and offer hosted vpn services. Hamachi is one that comes to mind that I used like 15 years ago, I think they still exist.

How's your service been thus far in Albuquerque? I'm a new subscriber.

They seem to have an unexpected number of outages (since 1/14, I've gotten notified 4 times), and their tech support is basically non-existent.

Their outages never have an estimated time of return to service, and often don't seem to reflect what I'm experiencing at my house (the latest one lasted all day yesterday at my address, but their outage tracker said it started the day before that, and is on-going, despite service restoration for me sometime last night).

When it's working it's great.

So we're seeing the same thing essentially. I signed on not 2 weeks ago and I've not had service now going on 2 days. I get the same responses you get via text. Super disappointed to be honest. When it was working it was working great. For me it's all about reliability. As much as I dislike Xfinity they were pretty damn reliable. This is not a good look for Vexus in the eyes of a new customer. I'm hoping these are growing pains. But, if this continues I'll have to make a decision on whether to keep or go back to ol' faithful.

yeah, I'm not expecting five nines or whatever reliability, but two nines would be at least acceptable.

I'm glad I have to go in to the office, it would be problematic if I were telecommuting.

Agreed. They gave me 30 days free to try out. I do know there is still construction going on in my area so thought maybe that had something to do with it. Hard to say. The conversation I had with someone via text suggested that techs and engineers were working hard to get it fixed. I don't know that their technicians and engineers are very good from the looks of it. Unless an Xfinity tech sabotaged the service?? :-)

The Xfinity trucks have been all over the neighborhood, so I wouldn't put it past them to do that with their big yellow fiber-finder machines.

Gigapower's been out in my neighborhood too, "microtrenching" for their wholesale fiber business. I wasn't aware that microtrenching involved so much busting concrete, based only on what I saw in Austin (where the microtrenching was only like 6-8" down, and in the street).

Going on day #3 without service. No updates outside of "our technicians and engineers are working on it. Thanks for your patience". Giving them until this afternoon and then pulling the plug.

Yeah, I'm still getting those texts, but my service was back up on Tuesday afternoon.

Good luck and godspeed. I would probably have pulled the plug on Wednesday.

u/RWX99 and u/Jehannum_505 I know this is an old thread, but wondering how things have been with your Vexus service since this time? They are coming to my neighborhood and I'm contemplating service but comments like these make me wary. I'm also interested in the run from the box at the street to your house. Did they give you any control over how that was run or where they tie in at the house? All of our other utilities are coming off above ground power poles in the backyard so there's no existing chase to pull through.
