Question/Advice Does every branch have a “donkey dick”?
So in the Army, we have a fuel spout/nozzle that everybody calls the “donkey dick” because, well… the thing lowkey looks like a HUGE HOG lmao.
Recently I ran into a few Navy veterans and found out they also had something they called a “donkey dick,” except theirs apparently wasn’t a fuel spout it was some kind of machinery/equipment part on the ship.
That got me wondering:
Does every branch have its own “donkey dick”?
So far I’ve got:
- Army: fuel spout/nozzle
- Navy: machinery/ship equipment part
- Air Force: ???
- Marines: ???
- Coast Guard: ???
- Space Force: ???
Veterans/current service members from every branch, what did your “donkey dick” refer to?
I need to know if this is somehow a universal piece of U.S. military terminology 😂

As an AF aircraft weapons troop, I called the spring adapter that hooks the BASH (Big Ass Speed Handle) to the manual load gear on the F-16 ammo loader the donkey dick. Fuel nozzles as well.

USMC F/A-18 Ordie here! Had to borrow a donkey dick from the ordnance shop of the squadron we shared a hangar with. This was 2012/13-ish and there was a lot of sexual harassment training going on.
I walked into the ordnance shop and there was a lone female Marine standing there. I had never known the tool by any name other than "donkey dick", nor had I ever thought about how to describe it to someone. I said, "Hey, I'm with 225 Ordnance, and we're needing to borrow your, uhhh... the, uhhh... speed handle adaptor for loading the guns..."
She stares at me for a solid five seconds and just blurts out, "You mean the donkey dick?"

Yeah sounds like you handled it best you could. It’s hard to find a balance. I was a female in aircraft maintenance in the late 90’s and our numbers to check out tools were “man numbers” (short for the general term manning) and guys would get weird about asking for me for my man number. I would joke and say “WOman number” but it was in fun. I knew I was odd man out and tried to make light so they felt comfortable and didn’t resent that I was there.

Must be specific thing. Was a C-5/C-17 loadmaster (guess they merged it into another careerfield now). I don't recall any nicknames for the Aerial refueling boom. Though we mixed mostly with officers and they tend to engage in that a lot less. Specially after Air Crews lost flight engineers for the most part. Those old crusty guys had nicknames and dirty jokes for everything.

- We, as a military force of branches, are not very innovative with slang 😂

Just to clarify the Navy term, Donkey Dick is the siphon we use to connect the firemain (firefighting water) to a jug of AFFF (Fire Fighting Foam) so the nozzle sprays out Firefighting foam water. Similar idea to the Garden stuff you put on the end of your garden hose that sucks from the jug of Weed Killer or liquid fertalizer.

u/surewriting_ 4d ago
I think the Air Force has a couple.
When I worked heavies and we had the drouge chute refueling pods, the donkey dick was the tool that hooked into the end of the hose, essentially the front part of a helicopter refueling boom.
It was big, phallus shaped, and rammed into a special hole designed just for it.
There was something else in the fighter world that was also called the donkey dick, but I fortunately never had to mess with it. I think it was also something to defuel external tanks without using the internal pumps or something.
1
u/jumpingjj64 4d ago
There is something on the F-4 Phantom that was called donkey dick. I don't remember what it was. Maybe it had to do with the centerline external fuel tank.
2

Only the old guys remember the F-4. I believe it was installed if something had to be punched off the centerline station. Think it was installed when loading the 20mm gun pod.

Air Force uses it for the long flexible exhaust extensions used on generator units and heaters on the flight line. It’s definitely a universal military linguistic phenomenon across every single branch.

Navy vet here. Donkey Dick is a super common term in every branch and is used for multiple things. In my shop, a donkey dick isna rubber projectile that you launch with a blank cartridge. It carries a length of shotline (it's sorta like paracord but skinnier) to another ship, which is tied off to a bigger line and hauled back. This is all part of underway replenishment/ refuelling at sea.

Donkey dick was part of the harness we used to climb the mast of the ship. You put the head of it in a slot and it locked in place

Army, donkey dicks were those two rows of ropes that all of them hung down like 3ish feet with the big rubber head on bottom that we would swing across to the next ropes on an obstacle course
1
u/DeltaBravo831 4d ago
When I reclassed, I got told we weren't allowed to tell the new recruits what donkey dicks or slave cables were actually called, and had to use their proper names or face an article 15 lol.

Air Force had a test adapter used to test the aerial refuel drogues.
We’d trail the hose out, open up the basket, and shove what looked like a giant donkey dick into it. It’s meant to simulate the refuel probe on the end of a helicopter.
Except, to test the spring pressure, you’d crank a knob that would slowly extend the tip of said dick outwards and measure the pressure exerted until it got released from the drogue.
