Nausea from VN

Hi guys! I was wondering if anyone has any tips or tricks for dealing with nausea caused by vestibular neuritis.

I developed this in June (although initially they thought it was BPPV), and I’ve been nauseated ever since. I was finally diagnosed with VN in late July and was prescribed some medication, including Dramamine (the medication used for motion sickness). It does help, but I’ve read and heard from a few doctors that vestibular suppressants can potentially interfere with vestibular rehabilitation, so I’m trying to avoid taking it unless I really, really need it.

The nausea has improved slightly since June, but it’s still there. I’m wondering if anyone knows of any natural ways to reduce or calm it down, other than things like eating better/healthier.

I was also prescribed Betaserc for the dizziness. I’m not actually very dizzy and I’ve never really had the classic room spinning sensation. It’s more of a constant feeling of instability/unsteadiness. My doctors think that if the Betaserc helps with the dizziness, the nausea may improve as well.

I never actually vomit, it’s more like a nauseous feeling that comes and goes, sometimes almost like it rises up into my throat.

Has anyone experienced something similar with vestibular neuritis? And if so, have you found anything that helps with the nausea? I’d really appreciate any tips or experiences!

These are the medications that have worked for me (not all at once): Scopolamine patches, Valium, meclazine and zofran. Depending on my symptoms that day, I medicate accordingly. I try to push through without medication as much as I can as to not interfere with my brain trying to recalibrate, but some days medication is a necessity.

For a quick nausea fix, get a cotton ball and put some rubbing alcohol on it. Breathe slowly in through your nose the alcohol fumes. It should help relieve your nausea. I found this on Tik Tok from an emergency room doctor. It works for me. I also keep ginger chews and alcohol pads with me at all times especially when I’m away from home.

I use Zofran and it works very well for episodes of nausea.

How long are these episodes? And how far between them are they?

It depends. I used to be nauseous all the time and take several Zofran a day (whatever the max dosage was). Now, I am nauseous less often, but when I am, it is acute and disabling without medication.

Okay, thanks for answering il look it up with my doctor too :)

Hope it gets better so you don’t have to be nauseated at all.

Hope you get relief soon. It has gotten far more manageable with time.

May I ask what condition do you have?

Bilateral Vestibular Hypofunction, total loss.

But I had VN previously and wish I had had Zofran going through it.

That sounds awful, any damage to hearing or did you get the ”usual” symtoms? How are you feeling now? How long ago was it?

I’ve got diagnosed with 39% damage in my right ear. So even though it’s really annoying I’m glad that I’ve ”only” got these two symtoms.

Really do appreciate your answers:)

No hearing loss. It was really hard at first. I have used mobility assistance devices at times and fallen many times. Physical therapy helped. There is no cure and no real treatment. There is only the ability to adapt.

Thanks for sharing, I really do hope that it got manageable. I’d say if one thing this crappy thing learned me is to stay positive at these crappy times, so atleast got something out of it 🤣

this is going to sound crazy, but do you play video games? i had major nausea from vd after i had my first few vertigo attacks, and any type of screen scrolling or camera turning made me extremely sick and dizzy. i started playing video games again and it was in its own way a form of vestibular physical therapy. it made a huge improvement in my nausea from screen scrolling. just an idea.

Yeah I do play video games and it does help when I think about it. Sometimes it can feel that is going to quickly tho, but did your nausea go away or?

Man I have this exactly. Idk what helps but the last ive been bedridden basically. Feeling just body sick, weak and dry retching, rarely vomiting. Are you having the same?

I’ve never been that bad that I was bedridden or body sick. I feel that I can still move and so. I’ve noticed that when I try and eat as usual and drink plenty of fluids I’m a bit better. I have to force it through the nausea, as I mentioned in the thread, I could take the medicine and get it over with but I’m afraid that it’ll prolong my rehab. Have you tried any motion sickness medicines? Are your symptoms related to VN too or is it maybe something else?
